Can you get Mounjaro on an NHS prescription?

Yes, Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years rather than opened to everyone at once.⁴ NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶

That is why a person can meet NICE's recommendation on paper and still be told by their practice that they are not yet in the current group. Full rollout is expected to take years. 02 · If you do not qualify yet

Private prescription while the rollout widens

If your BMI and health sit within the licence but outside the current NHS group, you can start privately with a free online consultation. A free consultation takes a short health questionnaire, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. 03 · Who can prescribe Mounjaro

Who can prescribe Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so it must be prescribed by an appropriately registered prescriber after an assessment. On the NHS that is your GP practice or an NHS weight-management service, within the phased rollout.⁶ Privately, it is a GPhC-registered prescriber reviewing your consultation.

In both cases the prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.¹ Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.¹

04 · Eligibility and BMI thresholds

Eligibility: BMI, conditions and background

NHS eligibility follows NICE: a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.⁴ The rollout started with the highest-need groups, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions, and other groups follow over several years.⁶ Your practice can tell you which group applies to you now.

Ethnic background also matters. People from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds are at higher risk of weight-related health problems at a lower BMI, so clinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for these groups.⁴ Ask your prescriber how this applies to you.

For private prescribing, the licence is broader: a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹ Our NHS qualification guide goes into this in more depth.

05 · Asking your GP

How to ask your GP to prescribe Mounjaro

Book a routine appointment and ask whether you fall within the current NHS Mounjaro group at your practice. Bring your BMI if you know it, your list of weight-related conditions and every medicine you take. Ask directly: "Am I in the current rollout group, and if not, what is the plan?"

Useful things to ask:

• Which group is the practice currently treating, given the rollout began with BMI 40+ and four or more qualifying conditions?⁶
• Do I meet NICE's recommendation of BMI 35+ plus at least one weight-related condition?⁴
• Does my ethnic background change the threshold that applies to me?
• Is there a referral to a weight-management service in the meantime?

If your GP says no, this often reflects the phased rollout. It can also reflect safety: Mounjaro is not suitable if you are allergic to tirzepatide or its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive; it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Extra care, or advice against treatment, applies with a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems.¹ Tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.¹

07 · What results to expect

What results can Mounjaro deliver?

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages, and individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.² Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.²

Mechanism in short: tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner.¹
