before you start.
-
Contrave and Mounjaro are separate weight-management medicines, and the Mounjaro licence describes it as a treatment used alongside diet and activity.
-
Never start a second weight-loss medicine on top of Mounjaro, or the reverse, without telling your prescriber first.
-
Report any new or worrying symptoms to your prescriber and via the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Can you take Contrave with Mounjaro?
The honest answer is that it is not something to do on your own. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
It is not a DIY stack.
Our guide on taking Mysimba and Mounjaro together covers the related question.
02 · Your next step
What should you do if you are in this position?
Start by working out which of these situations is yours, because each has a different sensible path.
| Your situation | Sensible next step |
|---|---|
| Taking Contrave, results disappointing | Speak to the prescriber who supplies it about whether a different licensed treatment suits you better. Do not add Mounjaro yourself. |
| Taking Mounjaro, appetite still hard to control | Raise it at your monthly review. Dose, diet, sleep and other medicines are checked before anything is added. |
| Thinking of starting both together | Not advisable without specialist advice. Tell your prescriber about every medicine and supplement you take. |
| Already taking both | Do not stop or change anything abruptly. Tell the Mounjaro prescriber so your treatment is reviewed. |
If you want to explore Mounjaro as your main treatment, our Mounjaro pen consultation starts with a free online questionnaire reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Our wider weight loss clinic page explains the whole pathway.
03 · Why combining is a prescriber decision
Why this is a prescriber decision
Mounjaro has a clear evidence base on its own. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary.
Those results describe tirzepatide used by itself. Your prescriber can advise on how Mounjaro fits with any other medicine you take.
A prescriber weighs the things a web page cannot: your other conditions, your current medicines, your blood pressure and mood history, and how you are tolerating treatment. That is the real reason a combination should never be self-started.
04 · How each medicine differs
How Mounjaro and Contrave differ
The two are different kinds of treatment. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection that activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1.1
If you are wondering where the tablet sits, our guide asking whether Contrave is a GLP-1 explains the distinction, and our page on the Contrave appetite suppressant covers how it is usually described.
Mounjaro itself comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 It is dosed once weekly and stepped up gradually, with at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond.1
05 · Overlapping side effects
Overlapping side effects and why they matter
Tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties, which is part of how it helps people feel fuller sooner.1 Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive: the most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.13
If a new symptom appears, contact your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
06 · Other medicines to flag
Other medicines your prescriber needs to know about
Contrave is only one of many things worth mentioning. Your prescriber needs a full list: prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements. Check with a pharmacist before taking any supplement; dosing is not standardised and supplements carry no clinical oversight.
Two examples: Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows stomach emptying.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 And if you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk; our guide on Mounjaro with glipizide goes through that.1
The same principle applies to any weight-management product: disclosure first, decision second.
07 · Switching rather than stacking
Switching rather than stacking
If Contrave has not given you the result you hoped for, speak to your prescriber about which licensed treatment may suit you. Mounjaro is a licensed option for adults who meet the criteria for weight management.1
On the NHS, Mounjaro is available but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.
If you are weighing other options, see our comparison of Mounjaro or phentermine. Whichever route you choose, your prescriber should know what you were taking before and when you stopped.
08 · Safe habits during treatment
Safe habits while on Mounjaro
Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 If you feel stuck, these are better first moves than adding a second product:
- Keep your weekly dose on the same day and follow the pen's instructions.
- Use your monthly review to discuss appetite, side effects and progress honestly.
- Check that any product you buy online is supplied through a regulated pharmacy, not a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping.
09 · Stopping and clearance
If you stop one of them
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.14
That matters if you are switching. Tell the prescriber exactly when your last dose was so they can plan around it. Do not make your own timetable.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
