Is Contrave a GLP-1? The Plain Answer (October 2026)

No, Contrave is not a GLP-1 medicine. It is a daily tablet that combines naltrexone and bupropion, so it belongs to a different drug class from GLP-1 treatments such as Mounjaro (a GIP and GLP-1 injection) and Wegovy (a GLP-1 injection). It does not act on gut-hormone receptors. Which route suits you is a prescriber's decision.

Contrave and GLP-1s explained

Contrave and GLP-1 medicines are often mentioned together because both are used in weight management. They are not the same thing, and the difference affects how they are taken, how they work and what evidence sits behind them.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Contrave is not a GLP-1. It is a combination tablet of naltrexone and bupropion.
  • Mounjaro activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Wegovy activates GLP-1 receptors only.
  • Never run two GLP-1 medicines together. Ask a prescriber before combining anything with Contrave.
  • Licensed UK weight-management options include Mounjaro, Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) injections, and Wegovy tablets and Foundayo tablets.
  • Head-to-head trial evidence exists for Mounjaro versus Wegovy, not for Contrave versus either.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Is Contrave a GLP-1 drug?

No. Contrave is not a GLP-1 drug. Its two ingredients, naltrexone and bupropion, are older medicines that were not developed to copy the gut hormone GLP-1. A GLP-1 medicine is defined by what it does: it activates GLP-1 receptors. Contrave does not do that.

People mix them up because both get described as weight-loss medicines, and both are talked about in the same online communities. Being used for the same goal does not make two medicines the same class.

02 · Side by side

Contrave vs GLP-1: the main differences

FeatureContraveGLP-1 medicines (Mounjaro, Wegovy)
Drug classNaltrexone and bupropion combinationGut-hormone receptor activators
FormTabletInjection (once weekly for both Mounjaro and Wegovy)
TargetNot the GLP-1 receptorGLP-1 receptor; Mounjaro also activates GIP

The practical point: if you want a GLP-1 type treatment, Contrave will not give you one. If you are comparing the two for another reason, such as a dislike of injections, speak to a prescriber about your full health history first.

03 · How GLP-1s work

How GLP-1 medicines work

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.13

That dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide. Contrave sits outside this group altogether. For a plain explanation of the terminology, see our guide to GLP-1RA versus GLP-1.

04 · What the trials show

What the trial evidence covers

In the first large head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5), adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).15 In the STEP 1 trial, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) lost on average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.9

Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone. Individual results vary.

05 · Combining medicines

Contrave and a GLP-1 together

Whether Contrave can be taken with a GLP-1 is a question for a prescriber who knows your full medical history, not something to decide from a web page.

One rule is firm: never run two GLP-1 medicines together. Because Contrave is not a GLP-1, it does not break that rule by itself, but that does not make a combination automatically safe. Tell every prescriber and pharmacist about everything you take.

06 · Better options and alternatives

What are the alternatives to Contrave for weight loss?

No single option suits everyone; a prescriber decides what suits you. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron), approved in August 2026. They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only.2021

Orlistat blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) are other licensed injectables. Supplements sold as a "natural GLP-1", such as berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. For related terms see our pages on Contrave as an appetite suppressant and the comparison of other weight-loss targets with GLP-1.

07 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access to GLP-1 treatment

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber and our supply comes direct from Eli Lilly through LillyDirect. Our GPhC registration is 9012878.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is Contrave considered a GLP-1?
No. Contrave is a tablet that combines naltrexone and bupropion, so it is not a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 medicines such as Wegovy and Mounjaro work by activating gut-hormone receptors. Contrave does not act on those receptors. If you are unsure which medicine class you are taking, ask your pharmacist or prescriber.
What class of medication is Contrave?
Contrave is a combination of two older medicines, naltrexone and bupropion, taken as a tablet. It is not in the GLP-1 class. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist for details of how it is prescribed.
What are the differences between Contrave and GLP-1?
Contrave is a tablet containing naltrexone and bupropion. GLP-1 medicines such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are injections that activate gut-hormone receptors, with Mounjaro activating both GIP and GLP-1.
Is Contrave or Ozempic a better option?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. A regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro and Wegovy, so a prescriber is the right person to advise.
What are the alternatives to Contrave for weight loss?
It depends on your health profile. Licensed options include Mounjaro, Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) injections, and Wegovy tablets and Foundayo tablets, all prescription-only. A prescriber can advise on tolerance, suitability and your goals; individual results vary.
Can I take Contrave and a GLP-1 together?
That is a decision for a prescriber who knows your history. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together, and tell every prescriber and pharmacist about all your medicines. Contrave is not a GLP-1, but that alone does not make a combination safe.
Is there a weight-loss pill that suits everyone?
No single pill is best for everyone. Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, both prescription-only with their own eligibility checks. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. Be cautious of supplements marketed as a natural GLP-1; they are not medicines and lack comparable trial evidence.
Why am I not losing weight on Contrave?
Medicines work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. If progress has stalled, speak to the prescriber who supplied it rather than changing your dose or adding other products. They can review your plan and whether a different licensed option is more suitable.
