Can GLP-1 Cause Hair Thinning? What UK Patients Should Know (October 2026)

Yes, GLP-1 medicines can be linked to temporary hair thinning, and for Mounjaro (tirzepatide) hair shedding is a recognised side effect. It is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1 Protein and overall nutrition matter.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct effect of the drug.
  • For most people the shedding settles as weight stabilises, so it is usually temporary.
  • Protein, balanced meals and enough fluids are the practical levers you can control.
  • A patchy, sudden or scarring pattern of hair loss is different and deserves a GP appointment.
  • Tell your prescriber if shedding worries you; a slower loss pace is sometimes an option.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is hair thinning on a GLP-1 medicine real?

Yes, it is real and it is documented. Temporary hair shedding is listed as a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1

Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1

If you want the wider picture across the whole drug class, our guides on GLP-1 hair loss and how GLP-1 medicines affect hair cover related questions. For Mounjaro specifically, see Mounjaro hair thinning.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to me, and what should I do next?

It is relevant if you are on, or considering, a GLP-1 medicine and you lose weight quickly. It is far less relevant if you have a settled, steady pattern of loss.

For most people the answer is to carry on while protecting the basics. Keep a protein source at every meal, keep your diet balanced rather than extremely restrictive, drink enough, and keep moving.1 If shedding is heavy, patchy or distressing, speak to your prescriber or GP rather than stopping on your own.

03 · Why hair sheds

Why does weight loss make hair shed?

Shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1

This is why the same pattern can follow other rapid weight loss, whatever method caused it. Protein intake and a balanced diet matter.

If you want a view on your own timeline, your prescriber or GP can look at your pattern of loss and your history.

Our guide on whether hair thinning is a side effect of Mounjaro goes into the listing in more detail.

04 · What trials reported

What the weight-management trials reported

Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 That is a higher rate on treatment than on placebo, though most people on the medicine did not report hair loss.

Hair shedding is among Mounjaro's common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people), alongside indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping and injection-site reactions.1 The most frequent effects of all are digestive.

Whatever the average, your own result may differ. Some people notice nothing at all. Others notice a clear change for a period and then see it settle.

05 · Protecting your hair

What helps reduce hair thinning on treatment

The practical steps are the same ones that protect your health generally. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1

Appetite is lower on treatment, so protein can slip without you noticing. Aim to include a protein source at every meal, and treat that as a fixed habit rather than something you do when you feel hungry.1 Alongside protein, prioritise vegetables and fibre, and keep fluids regular.1

Pace also matters. A loss pace guided by your prescriber, rather than maximum speed, is advised, and hair shedding is linked to rapid weight loss.1 If you feel your weight is dropping faster than is comfortable, tell your clinical team.

Resistance exercise is the other piece. It protects muscle, and the same habits that support muscle tend to go with eating enough protein.1 Regular moderate activity such as brisk walking, plus resistance work, is the evidence-backed pattern.

06 · Nutrition and appetite

Eating well when appetite is low

Eating enough of the right things is harder when you are rarely hungry. No food is banned on Mounjaro, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective: protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.1 Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit rather than the lowest intake you can manage.

Because the stomach empties more slowly, smaller and slower meals work better than large portions.1 Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, so plainer protein-led meals often suit better while you adjust. Stop at the first feeling of fullness, but make sure what you do eat counts.

Practical ideas that fit a small appetite include a protein item first at each meal, protein-rich snacks you can manage in small amounts, and planning meals ahead so you are not relying on whatever feels least unappealing. Drinking enough also matters more than usual, because reduced appetite means less fluid from food.1

If nausea or vomiting makes it hard to eat or keep fluids down, contact your clinical team. Poor intake over a long period is not good for your hair or your health, and your prescriber can adjust your plan.

07 · Other causes to consider

When hair loss may not be the medicine

Not every case of thinning on a GLP-1 medicine is caused by it. Hair changes have many causes, and starting treatment may simply coincide with something else.

See your GP if you notice distinct patches, hair loss in a pattern you have had in your family, a sore or scarred scalp, or loss that continues well after your weight has stabilised.

Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes as well as weight management, and if you have diabetes, your GP is the right person to look at whether anything else is contributing to hair changes.

For new symptoms that are not listed side effects, the right step is to discuss them with your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

08 · When to get help

When to speak to a clinician about hair loss

Speak to your prescriber or GP if the shedding is heavy, distressing or not settling as your weight stabilises. For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, so a pattern that does not is worth looking at.1

Also seek advice if hair is falling out in patches, if your scalp is painful or scarred, or if you have other new symptoms alongside the hair changes. A clinician can check for other causes.

Do not stop treatment or change your dose by yourself without talking to your clinical team. Prescribers can hold the current dose for longer before stepping up if the pace of loss feels too fast.1

You can report any suspected side effect, including hair loss, through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

Women often ask whether the experience differs; our guide on GLP-1 and hair loss in females addresses that directly, and hair thinning from Mounjaro and the broader does GLP-1 cause hair loss guide go further.

09 · Stopping and regrowth

Should I stop treatment because of hair thinning?

Usually, stopping is not the first step. Because shedding is linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people settles as weight stabilises, the more useful response is to protect nutrition and, if needed, slow the pace.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

The decision to continue is individual. If hair changes are affecting your wellbeing, say so. Any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel; a conversation with your prescriber is better than coping alone. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
