In this guide
01 · Your situation
Is hair shedding on a GLP-1 medicine relevant to you?
It is relevant if you are noticing more hair in the shower, on your brush or on your pillow since starting treatment or since a dose increase. Temporary shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in the trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 That framing is reassuring, but it is not a reason to ignore the symptom.
Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.
If you want the wider picture, our guide on whether Mounjaro causes hair loss covers the general question, and the page on weight loss medication and hair loss looks across treatments.
02 · Next steps
What to do next if your hair is shedding
Start by telling your prescriber, because they can review your dose, your pace of weight loss and your eating. Pace matters: the loss of a significant amount of weight quickly is what the shedding is linked to, so a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed is a sensible aim.1
Next, look honestly at what you are eating. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1 If you are not sure whether shedding is from treatment or from something else, a GP can look at other possible causes.
Ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of the service.
03 · Why shedding happens
Why hair shedding happens with weight loss medicines
Shedding follows rapid weight loss, not a direct action of the drug on the hair.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 Eating less is the intended effect, but it also means the diet needs care.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary.
Our related guides on weight loss injections and hair loss and taking Mounjaro and hair loss cover the same question from slightly different angles.
04 · How long it lasts
How long does GLP-1 hair shedding last?
For most people, shedding settles as weight stabilises, which means the timeline follows your weight rather than a fixed calendar.1
If shedding seems to be getting worse rather than settling, or is accompanied by other new symptoms, do not wait it out. Speak to your prescriber, and consider a GP review to look at causes unrelated to the medicine.
05 · Protecting your hair
How to reduce hair loss while on a GLP-1 medicine
Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, so keep meals balanced even when your appetite is small.1
The same measures that protect lean mass during weight loss are worth following: adequate protein, resistance exercise and a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed.1
Practical habits that fit this advice:
- Build each small meal around a protein source, then add vegetables and whole grains.
- Eat slowly and stop at the first feeling of fullness, so a smaller appetite does not become skipped meals.
- Stay hydrated, which also helps with constipation and tiredness.
- Keep gentle activity going, including resistance work if you can.
- Speak to your prescriber if a dose is hard to tolerate; they can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.
If a dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up, so speak to your clinical team rather than pushing through.1 Our collagen loss guide covers related body-change questions.
06 · Vitamins, shampoo and regrowth
Vitamins, shampoos and regrowth
Low-cost supplements are widely available without any clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised, so taking them on a hunch is not a safe plan.
If you are worried about a deficiency, the sensible route is to ask a GP or pharmacist whether blood tests are appropriate. That is more useful than guessing, because the right answer depends on your own results and your own diet. Be wary of products making dramatic hair-regrowth claims, especially any that promise specific results.
What not to do when hair is thinning? Avoid crash dieting to speed up weight loss, because rapid loss is the factor linked to shedding. Avoid stopping or changing your medicine by yourself, and avoid buying unregulated products from sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Ask your prescriber or a pharmacist instead.
07 · Other causes to rule out
Is it the medicine or something else?
Hair thinning in women has many causes, and a medicine starting around the same time does not prove it is the culprit. Perimenopause, stress, illness, diet changes and other conditions can all be involved.
Signs that point towards the weight-loss link include shedding that began after starting treatment or after a dose increase, and a period of fast weight loss. Signs that suggest you should see a GP include shedding that is patchy, accompanied by scalp changes or soreness, or continuing well after your weight has steadied.
Bring this to your appointment: when you started treatment, your dose history, how your weight has changed, what you eat on a typical day and any other new symptoms. A good record helps a clinician far more than a photo of your hairbrush. Our free GLPTrackr companion app can help you keep that history in one place.
Remember the mood and wellbeing side too. Hair changes can be upsetting, and any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
08 · Safety and reporting
Other side effects, serious warning signs and reporting
Hair shedding sits among the common effects, alongside indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping and injection-site reactions. The most common effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting or moving up a dose and, for most people, ease within days to a few weeks.1
Hair shedding is not an emergency, but some symptoms are. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.1
You can report any suspected side effect, including hair loss, through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators monitor medicines. If you are comparing treatments, our page on GLP-1 medicines and hair loss and the guide to the wider GLP-1 hair question give more context.
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
09 · Choosing treatment with eyes open
Should hair shedding put you off treatment?
For most people it should not be the deciding factor, but it should be part of an informed choice. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo, and it is linked to rapid weight loss.
It is more of a concern if you already have thinning you are anxious about. In that case, tell the prescriber at your consultation.
Access is also a factor. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, with the primary-care rollout beginning in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Whichever route you take, stay in touch with your clinical team about side effects.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
