GLP-1 and Hair: Why Shedding Happens and What Helps (October 2026)
GLP-1 and hair is a real but usually temporary issue: hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1 Balanced nutrition, enough protein and a sensible loss pace are the main levers.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect of Mounjaro, linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct effect of the drug.
-
For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, so hair usually recovers without specific treatment.
-
Protein and overall nutrition matter, so keep your reduced-calorie diet balanced rather than as small as possible.
-
Shampoos are cosmetic and cannot reverse shedding caused by weight change; patchy loss or scalp symptoms need a pharmacist or GP.
-
Tell your prescriber if shedding is distressing. They can review your dose pace and your diet.

01 · The core answer
Does GLP-1 treatment affect your hair?
Yes, it can, but the cause is mostly the speed of weight loss. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 For most people it settles as weight stabilises.1
Hair shedding is among the common effects (up to 1 in 10), alongside indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping and injection-site reactions.1 That puts it alongside everyday adjustment effects, not among the serious ones.
Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 It is a recognised effect, but a small minority of people report it, and it tends to be temporary.
| Question | Short answer | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Is it a direct toxic effect of the drug? | It is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. | Focus on pace of loss and nutrition. |
| Will it be permanent? | For most people it settles as weight stabilises. | Give it time and keep eating well. |
| Can diet make a difference? | Protein intake and overall nutrition matter. | Keep the reduced-calorie diet balanced. |
| Do shampoos fix it? | They are cosmetic and do not change the cause of weight-related shedding. | Use a gentle routine; do not rely on products. |
| Is patchy or scarring loss the same thing? | No, that is a different pattern and needs assessment. | See a pharmacist or GP. |
02 · Your next step
Is this relevant to me, and what should I do next?
It is relevant if you are on, or considering, a GLP-1 medicine and you care about your hair. Knowing the cause helps you act sensibly rather than stop a treatment that is working because of a temporary side effect.
If you are already shedding, do not panic and do not cut food intake further in an attempt to feel in control. Tell your clinical team. They can review how fast you are losing weight, whether your meals are balanced, and whether holding your current dose for longer makes sense.
If you are weighing up treatment, the sensible approach is to treat hair shedding as one of the possible effects you discuss in your consultation. Our weight loss clinic explains how a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, works.
03 · Why shedding happens
Why GLP-1 treatment and hair shedding go together
The most useful way to think about it is that your body notices a big change and reprioritises. That is why people who lose weight quickly by other routes, including strict dieting or surgery, can also see their hair thin for a while.
Mounjaro is an effective weight-management medicine. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. A medicine that produces substantial weight change over a sustained period is exactly the setting in which shedding is more likely to be noticed.
Reduced appetite is the second part of the picture. Mounjaro helps people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 If eating less also means eating less protein, your hair is one of the places it may show.
If you are worried about how long it is lasting, that is a conversation for your prescriber or GP.
You can read more about the mechanics in our guides on why you lose hair on GLP-1 treatment and why people lose hair on GLP-1 medicines.
04 · What the trials show
What the trial data say about hair loss
The trial data show hair loss is more common on tirzepatide than on placebo, but still affects a small minority. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1
Put differently, most people in the trials did not report hair loss at all. That is worth holding on to if you are anxious about starting. It is also fair to note that the figure is higher than placebo, which is why the effect is listed rather than dismissed.
Those numbers are not a forecast for you. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and the people in a trial are not a perfect match for any individual. Your starting weight, how quickly you lose, your diet and your general health all play a part.
It is also useful to see hair shedding in context with other effects. Digestive effects are far more common than hair shedding. Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are the effects most people are likely to notice, particularly when starting or moving up a dose.1 Most side effects appear in the first days after starting or increasing a dose, peak early and settle as your body adapts.1
See our page on whether GLP-1 treatment makes you lose hair, and for thinning, whether GLP-1 can cause hair thinning.
05 · Will hair grow back
Will hair grow back while on GLP-1 treatment?
For most people, yes: the shedding is temporary and settles as weight stabilises.1 That is why we describe this as a phase rather than a permanent change.
The phrase "as weight stabilises" is important. Shedding linked to the pace of weight loss tends to ease when the body is no longer under that pressure. For someone still titrating upwards, the pressure may continue for a while. For someone who has reached a maintenance dose and a steady weight, recovery is more likely to be noticeable.
- Keeping protein adequate at every meal rather than trying to compensate later.
- Letting your prescriber guide the pace of loss rather than chasing maximum speed.
- Staying hydrated and keeping meals balanced, which also helps with fatigue and constipation.
- Not stopping and starting treatment impulsively, because weight regain and a further swing in weight is its own change for the body.
Hair that regrows often looks uneven at first, with short new growth at the hairline or parting. That can be mistaken for continued loss. If you are unsure which you are seeing, a pharmacist or GP can look at your scalp directly.
If your hair has not settled and you remain concerned, do not wait indefinitely. Other causes of thinning exist and are unrelated to your medicine, and a proper assessment is more useful than another month of worry.
06 · Protecting your hair
What helps protect your hair during weight loss
The most reliable step is keeping your nutrition balanced while you eat less.
In practice, that means building meals around a protein source and not letting reduced appetite turn into skipped meals. When you feel full quickly, smaller, protein-led meals work better than filling up on low-nutrient foods. Practical steps that help with the digestive side of treatment also help here: eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, favour plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, and stay well hydrated.1
Resistance exercise protects lean mass, which matters for your face, skin and muscle as well as your general health. The counter-measures are adequate protein, resistance exercise, and a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed.1
Pace is something you can discuss. If a dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.1 A steadier loss may be gentler on the body overall. It is a fair question to put to your clinical team during your monthly reviews.
What we would not recommend is a crash approach, cutting food intake much further in the hope of protecting yourself. That works against the very thing hair needs.
On supplements, there is a lot of marketing aimed at people worried about hair loss. Our guide to GLP-1 hair loss supplements covers them in more detail. In short, they are no substitute for a balanced diet, and dosing is not standardised.
07 · Shampoos and products
Do shampoos help with GLP-1 hair shedding?
Shampoos can make hair feel and look fuller or care for your scalp, but they do not change the cause of weight-related shedding.
A sensible, low-risk approach is simple:
- Choose a gentle shampoo that you find comfortable on your scalp.
- Avoid harsh pulling, tight styles and very hot styling tools while hair is fragile.
- Be wary of any product or supplement that promises dramatic regrowth.
- Stop and ask a pharmacist if a product irritates your scalp.
You may also have seen "the big three" for thinning hair in discussions online. Those refer to treatments for inherited pattern hair loss, a different condition from shedding linked to weight change.
08 · When to get advice
When to talk to a prescriber, pharmacist or GP
Speak to someone when shedding is distressing, when it is not settling, or when it looks different from an even thinning. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, and your clinical team expects you to raise side effects.
Reasons to seek advice include:
- Shedding that is heavy, ongoing or affecting your confidence.
- Bald patches, a sore, itchy or scaly scalp, or hair breaking rather than falling out.
- Eating very little, or struggling to eat enough protein.
- Other symptoms such as marked tiredness, which can reflect eating less and the body adjusting.1
If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention. Serious side effects are uncommon but need medical help straight away, such as severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.1 Hair shedding is not in that category, but do not let a cosmetic worry distract you from those warning signs.
Feelings matter too. Any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel. Regulators have looked specifically at low mood and GLP-1 medicines, and the EMA's safety committee concluded that the evidence does not support a causal link.17 Even so, if hair changes are affecting your mood, tell your prescriber, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
You can also report any suspected side effect yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 If you are an EverydayMeds customer, our support team is available Monday to Friday and your ongoing monthly reviews are a natural place to raise it. For a fuller overview, see our guide to GLP-1 hair loss and losing hair on GLP-1 treatment.
09 · Other GLP-1 effects
Hair, face and body changes on GLP-1 medicines
Hair is only one of the visible changes people ask about.
"Ozempic face" is a good example. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. It is not a drug effect. It is what losing a significant amount of weight quickly can do to facial volume, on any method including diet or surgery. The same applies to loose skin, which commonly adapts gradually after weight stabilises.1 The counter-measures overlap neatly with hair protection: adequate protein, resistance exercise, and a loss pace guided by your prescriber.1
Wegovy is a different once-weekly injection, and its own patient information is the place to check its listed effects.
Finally, remember how the medicine works and what to expect when you stop. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Stopping because of hair shedding is your decision to make with your prescriber, but it is worth knowing the shedding is generally linked to the weight change, not to the drug being present in your body.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
