Does GLP-1 Cause Hair Loss? (October 2026)

Yes, GLP-1 treatment can be followed by hair shedding, but it is temporary and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. In the Mounjaro weight-management trials, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 For most people it settles as weight stabilises. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect of Mounjaro, but it is temporary for most people.
  • It is linked to rapid weight loss itself, not a direct drug effect, so it is not specific to one medicine.
  • Protein and balanced nutrition matter, because eating much less can leave hair short of what it needs.
  • For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises; you do not normally need to stop treatment.
  • Tell your clinical team about patchy, painful or persistent hair loss so other causes can be considered.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does GLP-1 cause hair loss?

GLP-1 treatment can be followed by temporary hair shedding, and the product information lists it as a common side effect of Mounjaro.1 For most people it settles as weight stabilises.

The trial figure puts this in proportion. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 So it is more common on treatment than on placebo, yet most people taking the medicine do not report it. Individual results vary, and trial averages do not predict your own experience.

It also helps to see where hair loss sits among the other effects. Most side effects are digestive, such as nausea, diarrhoea and constipation, and they are most likely when you start or move up a dose.

02 · Why it happens

Why does GLP-1 cause hair loss?

The link is with rapid weight loss, not with the medicine acting on hair directly. Mounjaro activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 That is the intended effect, and it means you eat noticeably less.

Eating much less, and losing weight quickly, is a big change for the body. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1 If meals shrink and protein falls with them, hair is one of the places people tend to notice it.

We cover that wider picture in our guides on weight loss drugs and hair loss and weight loss medication and hair shedding.

03 · What to do

Is this relevant to you, and what next?

It is relevant if you are about to start treatment, are moving up through the doses, or have noticed more hair in the shower or on your brush. For most people the sensible response is practical: protect protein and nutrition, avoid chasing maximum speed, and keep your prescriber informed.

If you are still deciding whether treatment is right for you, our weight loss clinic explains the options.

04 · Do all GLP-1s cause it?

Do all GLP-1 and weight loss injections cause hair loss?

No medicine causes it in everyone, and the cause is not tied to a single brand. The Mounjaro information describes hair shedding as linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 That points to the pace of weight loss and the drop in food intake, which different treatments can share.

If you take a different GLP-1 medicine, your prescriber or its patient leaflet is the place for its own figures.

That is why a loss pace guided by your prescriber, rather than maximum speed, is sensible advice for hair as well as for skin and muscle.

For a medicine-specific view, see our page on Mounjaro and hair loss, and for the wider class see GLP-1 meds and hair loss and GLP1 and hair thinning.

05 · How long it lasts

How long does GLP-1 hair shedding last?

For most people it settles as weight stabilises.1

Shedding follows a period of fast weight loss, so it tends to ease when the pace slows and your weight levels off. Many people reach that point on a maintenance dose, which could be 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.1

Be patient and judge progress over months, not days. If shedding is heavy, keeps going after your weight has settled, or comes with other symptoms, speak to your clinical team so other causes can be looked at.

If you read the patient leaflet, you will see hair shedding listed among the common effects.13

06 · Reducing your risk

How to avoid hair loss on GLP-1

You cannot remove the risk entirely, but nutrition is the main thing you can influence. The main lever is nutrition, because protein intake and overall nutrition matter.1

  • Put protein in every meal. When appetite is small, make each meal count rather than filling up on low-nutrient food.
  • Keep the diet balanced. The reduced-calorie diet that goes with treatment should still include varied vegetables, wholegrains and healthy fats.
  • Do not chase maximum speed. A loss pace guided by your prescriber is gentler on hair, skin and lean mass.
  • Keep up resistance exercise. It protects lean mass, which helps your overall health while you lose weight.
  • Stay hydrated and manage digestive effects. If nausea or constipation is stopping you eating well, deal with it early rather than pushing through.
  • Move up doses at a pace you tolerate. If a new dose is hard to manage, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.1

If you want help with eating little but well, our guide on collagen, muscle and skin changes covers the same protective habits.

07 · Vitamins and products

Vitamins, shampoos and what not to do

Protein intake and overall nutrition matter when you are eating less.

If you are worried about a deficiency, the sensible route is to ask your GP or pharmacist whether a blood test is appropriate, instead of buying a stack of supplements. Low-cost supplements are available without assessment and carry no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. Treat marketing that promises dramatic hair regrowth with caution.

On what not to do while shedding, a few common-sense points apply:

  • Do not crash-diet to try to speed up weight loss, because rapid loss is the factor linked to shedding.
  • Do not skip meals to hit a target; eat small, balanced meals instead.
  • Do not stop your medicine suddenly on your own because of shedding without talking to your prescriber first.
  • Be gentle with your hair, since heavy styling and tight styles can add to breakage on top of shedding.

Concentrate on nutrition and pace instead.

08 · Stopping and regrowth

Will hair grow back if you stop?

Hair shedding that is tied to weight loss is described as temporary, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises, whether or not they stop.1 Stopping is therefore not usually needed just to let hair recover. Your weight settling is the key event, not the end of the medicine.

If you do stop, tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

A decision to stop should be made with your prescriber, who can look at the whole picture: your weight goals, other side effects and how you are eating. Ask about adjusting the pace or holding your current dose. Regular reviews are part of our aftercare, including side-effect support from the prescribing team.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

10 · When to get checked

When to speak to your prescriber or GP

Speak to your clinical team if hair loss worries you, because they can check whether it fits the usual pattern. Typical GLP-1 related shedding follows rapid weight loss and settles as weight stabilises.1 Things that do not fit that picture deserve a conversation.

  • Hair loss that is patchy, painful, itchy or comes with a rash or sore scalp.
  • Shedding that carries on well after your weight has levelled off.
  • Other new symptoms alongside it, such as marked tiredness, which is a recognised effect that should settle but needs mentioning if severe.
  • Low mood about your appearance. Any big change in weight and routine can affect how you feel, so tell your prescriber if your mood drops.

You can also report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators keep the safety picture current.

For women who are asking whether hormones, life stage or menopause change the picture, see hair loss in women on GLP-1. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice, and Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does GLP-1 cause hair loss?
It can. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect of Mounjaro, linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. In the weight-management trials, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide, compared with 1.0% on placebo. For most people it settles as weight stabilises. Individual results vary.
Why does GLP-1 cause hair loss?
The link is with rapid weight loss and eating much less, not a direct effect on hair. The medicine reduces appetite, so intake falls, and protein and overall nutrition matter for hair. Keeping meals balanced, with protein at each one, and avoiding chasing maximum speed are the practical ways to reduce the risk.
How long does GLP-1 hair shedding last?
For most people it settles as weight stabilises, so it tends to ease once your weight levels off on a maintenance dose.
How can I avoid hair loss on GLP-1?
Protect nutrition. Include protein in every meal, keep the reduced-calorie diet balanced, stay hydrated and keep up resistance exercise. These steps reduce the risk but cannot remove it.
Will my hair grow back if I stop the injection?
Shedding linked to weight loss is temporary and for most people settles as weight stabilises, so stopping is not normally required for regrowth. If you do stop, tirzepatide takes four to five weeks to clear the system. Discuss any decision to stop with your prescriber first.
Do all weight loss injections cause hair loss?
Not everyone on any of them will lose hair. Because the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, it is not unique to one product. For another medicine, check its patient leaflet or ask your prescriber for its own figures.
What vitamin is lacking if my hair is thinning?
Protein intake and overall nutrition matter when you eat less. If you are worried about a deficiency, ask your GP or pharmacist about testing rather than self-treating with supplements, whose dosing is not standardised.
Should I tell my prescriber about hair loss?
Yes, particularly if it is heavy, patchy, painful or carries on after your weight has settled. Your prescriber can check it fits the usual pattern and review your nutrition. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
