How much does Mounjaro cost privately in the UK?

The private cost of Mounjaro is the price of one pen per month, and that price depends on the dose. A single Mounjaro pen holds four weekly doses, so you pay once after at least four weeks. At standard prices the 2.5mg pen costs £169.99, the 5mg pen £189.99, the 7.5mg pen £244.99, the 10mg pen £274.99, the 12.5mg pen £289.99 and the 15mg pen £299.99.

Discounts then come off those standard prices. A new customer gets £40 off their first order at any dose with code FIRST40. What is included in the price

The price you see covers the medicine itself and the clinical service around it. Our consultation is a free online health questionnaire with no obligation, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. 03 · Dose-by-dose costs

How the price changes with each dose

The price of Mounjaro rises as the dose rises. Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹ Each pen is designed to deliver four weekly doses, so one pen covers four weeks of treatment.

In weekly terms, the 2.5mg pen works out at £42.50 per week, 5mg at £47.50, 7.5mg at £61.25, 10mg at £68.75, 12.5mg at £72.50 and 15mg at £75.00. These weekly figures are standard prices before any discount. They are useful for comparing against providers who quote weekly prices, but you still pay for the whole four-week pen up front.

The dose you end up on matters more to your budget than the starting price. Most people begin on 2.5mg and move up in steps, and your prescriber decides when and whether to increase the dose based on how you are responding and tolerating treatment. Some people reach a dose that works well and stay there rather than going to the top of the range. Because the prescriber guides each step, you do not have to pick a maintenance dose in advance, and you should not choose one just to fit a budget.

Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your pen.¹³ It explains how to use the pen and what to do if you miss a dose. If you are moving from another provider, bring your current dose to the consultation, because a first order at any dose is eligible for the new-customer discount. For example, someone switching at 15mg has a first order of £259.99, against the standard £299.99.

To compare against a competitor quote properly, always ask three things: which dose the price applies to, whether it repeats on the next order, and what fees sit on top. A figure quoted for 2.5mg tells you very little about what month five will cost. 04 · Planning a year

What a first year of private Mounjaro costs

A first year on Mounjaro costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, and up to £3,279.88 if you settle at 15mg, at standard prices. Both totals cover 52 weeks, or 13 pens, and are before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less, so your real total will be lower than these headline figures.

The first phase is the dose-increase period, if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose. The first four pens, covering 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg, cost £879.96 at standard prices. Those are not repeat purchases of one strength. Each pen is a different dose, so the cost climbs gradually through this stage. After the dose increases, you continue on the dose your prescriber considers right for you.

For other maintenance doses, use that dose's monthly price: £244.99 at 7.5mg, £274.99 at 10mg and £289.99 at 12.5mg, before the £25 reorder discount.

What you get for that spend varies from person to person. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages, and individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

05 · NHS versus private

NHS access versus paying privately

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.⁴ The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

The honest picture is that the NHS route costs you only the standard prescription charge in England (£9.90 per item, where charges apply), but it depends on whether you fall into a group being prioritised in your area. Private treatment costs more, but access depends on the licensed criteria and a prescriber's assessment, not on where you sit in a rollout queue. Neither route is better in itself. It comes down to your eligibility, your timing and your budget.

A common question is whether people with diabetes can get Mounjaro on the NHS. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes as well as weight management, and the NHS describes it as a medicine to manage type 2 diabetes and treat obesity.⁵ Whether it is prescribed for you depends on your diabetes team or GP, who will look at your overall treatment plan. Ask your GP or diabetes nurse about your local eligibility first.

06 · Who can get it

Who can be prescribed Mounjaro privately

Private prescribing follows the licence, so eligibility is the same clinical test whether you pay or not. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹ It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹ A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.

That assessment is the main reason the cost is worth understanding in context. You are paying for a licensed medicine and a clinical decision, not just a pen in the post. If the prescriber decides Mounjaro is not suitable, your order is refunded automatically in full.

On pricing background, Eli Lilly announced an increase in the UK list price of Mounjaro, effective 1 September 2025.¹⁰ Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts, which is why the same dose can cost different amounts at different providers.

What the money buys: how Mounjaro works

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.¹ Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).

Understanding this helps you judge value. Mounjaro is a medicine that supports a diet and activity plan; it is not a substitute for one. The trial results reflect people who combined it with lifestyle changes. In SURMOUNT-1, at 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.² Those are trial averages, and individual results vary. They do not predict your own result.

Duration also affects cost. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system.¹ There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. If you stop, you stop paying, but stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.¹⁴ Your prescriber is the right person to discuss what staying on treatment or stopping would mean for you.

When weighing cost against benefit, consider the whole programme rather than the pen alone. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified.⁷ Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide. Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.¹² Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹ Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you take the oral contraceptive pill, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method (such as condoms) for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
