Can your GP prescribe Mounjaro privately?

Yes, in principle. A doctor can issue a private prescription for a licensed medicine if they judge it suitable for you. But your GP is not required to, and the decision sits with the individual doctor and practice. It is possible, it is not assured to be offered, and it is worth asking your surgery directly.

Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹ A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.¹¹ Any GP who agrees to prescribe will make that same assessment.

04 · What to say to your GP

What to say to your GP to get Mounjaro

Be specific and factual. Book a routine appointment, state your current weight and BMI, and ask directly whether the practice can prescribe Mounjaro, either on the NHS or privately. Vague requests are easier to decline than a clear clinical question.

Bring the following with you:

• Your height, weight and BMI, ideally measured recently.
• Any weight-related conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹
• A list of your current medicines, because a prescriber will review these before deciding.¹¹
• A summary of what you have already tried with diet and activity, since Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹

Then ask two questions. First, do I meet the NHS criteria in your area? NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, with the NHS primary-care rollout starting from the highest-need groups.⁴⁶ Second, if not, will you issue a private prescription, or can you refer me to someone who will?

05 · Why a GP may say no

Why won't my doctor prescribe Mounjaro?

A GP may decline for several reasons, and some are legitimate clinical ones.

• You may fall outside the criteria. The licence covers a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition.¹ NHS access is narrower, starting with BMI 40+ and four or more qualifying conditions in the first stage of the rollout.⁶
• Your medical history or medicines may make it unsuitable. That is a clinical judgement the prescriber has to make.
• The practice may not offer private prescribing. Writing a private prescription is the doctor's choice, not an entitlement for the patient.
• Local NHS rollout may not have reached your group yet. Access is being phased in over several years.⁴

06 · NHS access today

How quickly can you get Mounjaro on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.⁴ The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years. That means how soon you could be reached depends on where you fall in the sequence and on your local service. Your GP surgery can tell you whether you are in a current eligible group.

08 · What the trial shows

What to expect from treatment

Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection that activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.² These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside diet and activity, not instead of them.

A private GP suits you if you want a face-to-face appointment and an ongoing relationship with one doctor. An online prescriber suits you if you want a decision without waiting for a surgery appointment, and want the medicine dispensed and delivered in one process.
