What Non-Prescription Drug Helps Weight Loss? UK Guide (October 2026)
The main medicine sold over the counter in the UK for weight loss is orlistat, sold as alli, which a pharmacist can supply after questions; it is not a prescription drug. Supplements and "natural" products are different: they are not clinically assessed weight-loss medicines. For a licensed medicine with published trial results, the prescription route is tirzepatide (Mounjaro), from £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Supplements, "natural Ozempic" products and fat burners are low-cost, have no clinical oversight and make dramatic weight-loss claims.
-
In SURMOUNT-1, people on tirzepatide lost on average 15% (5mg) to 20.9% (15mg) of body weight over 72 weeks; individual results vary.
-
Mounjaro is prescription-only: a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every consultation, and the consultation is free.
-
"Best" depends on your BMI, health conditions and goals, so a prescriber's assessment matters more than any ranking.
In this guide
01 · The honest answer
What non-prescription drug helps weight loss?
Only one kind of weight-loss medicine is sold without a prescription in UK pharmacies: orlistat, branded as alli. It is sold from behind the pharmacy counter, so you answer a pharmacist's questions first. Your pharmacist can explain how it is used and what to expect, and our guide to best non prescription weight loss drugs goes into the wider shelf.
Everything else sold as a weight-loss aid without a prescription is a supplement, a herbal product or a "fat burner". These are not licensed in the same way as medicines, and their dosing is not standardised. Many carry dramatic weight-loss claims.
| Option | Prescription needed? | Clinical oversight | What is known |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orlistat (alli) | No, pharmacist-supplied | Pharmacist questions at the counter | Figures vary; ask your pharmacist or prescriber |
| Supplements, "natural Ozempic", fibre, fat burners | No | None | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight; dosing is not standardised |
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Yes, weekly injection | Free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, plus monthly reviews | SURMOUNT-1 averages of 15% to 20.9% over 72 weeks; individual results vary2 |
| Wegovy (semaglutide) | Yes, weekly injection | Prescriber-led | Dose steps up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, with the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 1718 |
The point is that the products differ in kind: one is a pharmacist-supplied medicine, one is an unassessed supplement category, and two are prescription injections assessed against clear licensing criteria.
02 · Prescription route
When prescription treatment is the better route
Prescription treatment suits you if you meet the licensed criteria and want a medicine with published trial results. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition, and is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber decides whether it is suitable after reviewing your BMI, history and current medicines.13
The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starting dose. A new customer saves £40 on their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). All six doses are in stock. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid.
You can also browse all weight loss treatments.
03 · How to get it
How ordering works
Ordering takes three steps. First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your consultation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. You can start your free consultation whenever you are ready.
04 · Over-the-counter limits
Why over-the-counter products have limits
Over-the-counter weight-loss products are limited mainly by what they are, and by how much oversight comes with them. A pharmacist-supplied medicine such as orlistat involves a short conversation at the counter. A supplement involves no assessment at all, because you simply add it to a basket. Neither route involves a prescriber reviewing your medical history, your current medicines and your weight-related conditions in the way a prescription consultation does.
That matters because weight management is rarely just about weight. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are all weight-related conditions, and a prescriber considers them together. Someone buying a supplement from a website gets none of that context, and nobody checks whether the product suits them or interacts with something they already take.
Marketing is the other limit. A low-cost supplement with no clinical oversight is cheap for a reason: nobody has to show it works before it reaches you.
None of this means every over-the-counter product is dangerous or that you should not speak to a pharmacist. It means the honest framing is narrow. Orlistat is a recognised pharmacy medicine and a pharmacist can talk you through it, including whether it suits you and what to expect. Beyond that, treat bold claims with caution and ask a pharmacist or GP before taking anything new, especially if you already take regular medicines.
Injectable weight-loss medicines are not legitimately sold without a prescription; see our guide to weight loss injections non prescription. Anyone offering to supply them without a consultation or prescription is not operating as a regulated pharmacy.
No product, over the counter or prescribed, replaces a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. If diet and exercise alone have not been enough, a conversation with a prescriber is a sensible next step, and it costs nothing to begin. You can also ask your GP, who can discuss NHS options, or use our free consultation to see whether private treatment is suitable.
05 · How Mounjaro works
How prescription Mounjaro works
Mounjaro works by activating two gut-hormone receptors at once. Tirzepatide is the active ingredient, and it is the first treatment of its kind to target both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Together they help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That supports a reduced-calorie diet, which is why the medicine is licensed for use alongside one. It is not a stimulant and it does not replace eating well or moving more; it changes how hungry you feel while you do those things.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic. Both groups are prescription medicines, and both are used with diet and activity. The right choice depends on your health, your goals and what a prescriber judges suitable.
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, the KwikPen. It comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. You start low and step up over time under prescriber supervision.
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. That long half-life is part of why a weekly schedule works.
Compare this with a supplement. The difference is not about "natural" versus "chemical"; it is about a product that has been studied, licensed and supervised versus one that has not.
For injectables in particular, best prescription weight loss injections lays out the choices a prescriber can discuss with you.
06 · What the trials show
What the SURMOUNT-1 trial showed
SURMOUNT-1 is the headline trial for tirzepatide in weight management. It enrolled 2,539 adults, and people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks. People using lifestyle changes alone lost 3.1%.2
These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and you should not read them as a promise.
The spread of outcomes is also informative. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
To make the percentages concrete, take a worked example. For someone starting at 100 kg, an average of 20.9% is about 21 kg, and an average of 15% is about 15 kg. Someone starting at a different weight would see a different number, because the percentage applies to their own starting weight.
The takeaway is simpler. A prescription medicine with published, peer-reviewed trial results at defined doses offers something a supplement cannot: a body of evidence you can read for yourself.
Remember the other half of the sentence in the trial: the comparison group received lifestyle changes alone, and they lost 3.1% on average. That is a real result and a reminder that diet and activity do matter. It is also why the medicine is licensed as an addition to them rather than a substitute. If you are weighing whether to add a medicine, SURMOUNT-1 gives an honest picture of what lifestyle changes alone and lifestyle changes with tirzepatide looked like in the same study.
07 · Who is eligible
Who can be prescribed Mounjaro
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.1
It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.13 That assessment is the point of the consultation, not a formality, and it can end with a decision that the medicine is not right for you.
Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
If your BMI falls below the licensed thresholds, prescription Mounjaro is not the appropriate route, and a pharmacist or GP can discuss other approaches. If you meet the criteria, you do not have to settle for an unsupervised product.
The consultation is a short health questionnaire, free, with no obligation. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than a scoring script. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically. After you start, the prescribing team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, along with side-effect support.
Medicines have side effects, and the full list is in the patient information leaflet, which every prescriber expects you to read. Tell your prescriber about any new symptoms. You can also report a suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Equally, tell the prescriber about every medicine you take, including supplements. That is one practical way over-the-counter products and prescription treatment meet: the prescriber needs the whole picture, and supplements are part of it. Being open about them helps the review work properly and keeps you safer.
08 · NHS and private
NHS or private: the honest picture
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.6
Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. It is a choice, not a requirement, and the NHS remains the right first conversation for many people. Your GP can tell you where you sit in the phased rollout.
NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP about that route.
Private treatment is different in three ways. You can start once a prescriber has approved your consultation, rather than waiting for a local rollout stage. You pay for the medicine yourself, and prices are shown live on our product page. And you stay under prescriber oversight, with monthly reviews included.
Neither route involves a non-prescription shortcut. People sometimes look for over-the-counter products because they have been told they do not qualify yet, or because the NHS waiting time feels long. Those are understandable reasons. The safer response is to ask a prescriber what is appropriate for your situation, rather than substituting an unsupervised product for a supervised medicine.
Prices are per pen, each pen lasts four weeks, and a new customer's first order is £40 less than the standard price.
A practical tip: check the NHS guide to tirzepatide and your GP's local position before deciding.5 You do not have to pick one path forever. Some people start privately and review their position as NHS availability grows; others stay with the NHS route. Whichever you choose, tell every clinician you see what you are taking.
09 · Year cost planning
What a year of prescription treatment costs
A first year of Mounjaro costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. Those totals cover 52 weeks, which is 13 pens, at standard prices and before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less than the standard price.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. Not everyone goes all the way to the top dose; a prescriber sets the dose that is right for you.
For other maintenance doses, use the monthly price. The 7.5mg pen is £279.99, the 10mg pen is £290.99 and the 12.5mg pen is £319.99. Each is the standard price for one pen, which lasts four weeks, and each is reduced by £25 on every reorder.
Each pen price, from the 2.5mg pen at £169.99 up to the 15mg pen at £329.99, is a monthly price. The weekly equivalents are £42.50 at 2.5mg and £54.75 at 5mg, rising to £82.50 at 15mg. Switching to us from another provider at a higher dose? The new-customer discount still applies: your first order is £40 less at any dose.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 10 October 2026). For the same dose, the gap between providers runs from £27 to £41. Shopping around is reasonable, as long as the pharmacy is registered and the product is genuine.
We supply through official LillyDirect, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with genuine KwikPens and all six doses stocked. We accept Visa, Mastercard and Klarna, and there are pay-monthly options with no subscription. You can buy Mounjaro once your consultation is approved.
Compare that structure to a supplement: it has no medical oversight, no defined course and no review. A low price on its own does not tell you whether a product is useful. Measure value by evidence, supervision and what you are actually buying.
10 · Prescription options compared
Which prescription weight-loss drug is best?
There is no single best prescription weight-loss drug for everyone, because the right one depends on your BMI, health conditions, other medicines and preferences. A prescriber weighs those factors.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg, licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.
Wegovy (semaglutide) is also a once-weekly injection. Its pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, and the dose steps up after at least 4 weeks, reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18 Semaglutide acts on a single receptor, GLP-1.
Liraglutide, supplied as Saxenda and in products such as Erly, comes at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre. It is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Figures vary for liraglutide; your prescriber can advise.
Tablet options also exist, including Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so their results should not be set against Mounjaro's as if they were head to head. See current Wegovy tablet prices on the relevant product page.
SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss.15
If safety is your priority, read what is the safest weight loss drug on the market.
ADHD medicines are sometimes discussed in connection with weight loss too. They are not licensed as weight-loss treatments, and our page on the best ADHD drug for weight loss explains why weight change should not be the reason anyone uses them.
11 · Safety and buying safely
Buying safely and spotting risks
The safest way to buy any weight-loss medicine is from a registered pharmacy after a proper consultation. You can check a pharmacy on the GPhC public register; ours is registration 9012878.12 A pharmacy that sells prescription-only injections without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign.
Counterfeit and unlicensed weight-loss injections have been the subject of MHRA alerts, so treat any too-good-to-be-true offer with caution.7 Social media sellers, unfamiliar websites and anyone promising specific results or dramatic weight-loss claims deserve particular scepticism. Our Mounjaro comes from official LillyDirect supply and consists of genuine KwikPens.
Medicines can cause side effects, and the patient information leaflet is the authoritative list.13 If you notice something new, speak to your prescriber. You can report a suspected side effect or a suspect product through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Every order from us includes needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance. Delivery is free next-day, tracked, in discreet temperature-controlled packaging. Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
Refunds work as follows: declined consultations are refunded automatically in full. Dispensed prescription medicines cannot be returned, except if faulty, damaged or the wrong item, in which case you should contact us within 3 days. We do not auto-ship; repeat orders re-check suitability.
Finally, our free GLPTrackr app helps you track a GLP-1 journey on iOS or Android. It is a companion for your records and does not replace reviews with your prescriber. Over 100,000 customers have been supported on their weight loss journey with us, which describes how many people we have served, not how well treatment will work for you.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
