01 · Getting a prescription

Can you get the Mounjaro jab on prescription?

Yes. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, and you can get it through the NHS or through a regulated private service. It is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.¹ Our own prescription requirements guide covers the basics, and our weight loss injection prescription guide covers the wider picture.

Private prescribing follows the licence. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.¹

02 · NHS vs private

Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, so many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment. To ask your GP, book an appointment, bring your BMI and any weight-related conditions, and ask whether you fall within the current NHS group in your area. Your GP decides on NHS eligibility.

04 · What the prescriber checks

What the prescriber checks before prescribing

A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.¹ That is why a consultation is required, and why a pharmacy offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign.

Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows, so tell your prescriber what you take.⁷ The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ Insulin and sulfonylurea doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.¹ Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

05 · Dose ladder and injecting

Dose ladder and how you inject

Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. The starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose rises to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at minimum 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) to a maximum of 15mg weekly. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg; higher is not automatically better.¹

Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Sites are the stomach (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else injects. Rotate sites. Each KwikPen holds four weekly doses.¹ See our Mounjaro injection technique guide. Missed a dose? Take it within 4 days (96 hours) of schedule; after that, skip it.¹³

06 · Storage and travel

Storing pens once prescribed

Keep pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept not above 30°C for up to 30 days, then discarded. Keep the cap on to protect it from light.¹ You can fly with Mounjaro: carry pens in hand luggage with the prescription label or a copy.¹³ For an unopened pen that has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before use. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

07 · What results look like

How long does Mounjaro take to work?

Weight loss is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward. Think in months, not days. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether to continue, adjust or stop.¹

In SURMOUNT-1 (2,539 adults), people on tirzepatide with diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.²
