Yes, you can switch Mounjaro providers in the UK, and nothing ties you to the pharmacy that supplied your first pen. Mounjaro is a private prescription, so each provider runs its own consultation. Moving means completing a new health questionnaire with the new pharmacy, which is then reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. The prescriber at the new pharmacy signs off your dose and your order.

Who does switching suit? It suits people who want a different price, clearer ongoing support, faster delivery or a provider they can contact easily. It also suits people on a higher dose who want to see what a first-order discount does to their next pen. It is less suited to anyone who is unwell, newly pregnant or planning pregnancy, or struggling with side effects. In those cases, speak to a prescriber about the treatment itself before you worry about the provider. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. 04 · What to bring

What to bring when you switch

The most useful thing to bring is a clear record of where you are on treatment. A new prescriber is taking over a medicine you are already using, so they need to know which strength you take, how long you have been on it and how you have coped. The more precise that record, the easier it is for them to make a sensible decision.

Gather these before you start a new consultation:

• The strength of your current pen (2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg or 15mg) and roughly when you started it.
• Your dose history: which strengths you have used and for how many weeks each.
• The date of your last injection, so the prescriber can see whether there has been a gap.
• Any side effects you have had and whether they settled, for example nausea or constipation.
• Your other medicines, including anything for diabetes, plus any contraception you use.
• A photo of your current pen box or dispensing label, if you still have it, showing the strength and date.

None of these is a test you can fail. They are the facts a prescriber would otherwise have to guess. If you have lost the box, your last order confirmation email or your previous provider's account page usually shows the strength and date, and you can tell the prescriber what you remember honestly.

What to tell the prescriber about your medicines

Your medicines list and medical history are part of every consultation, and a new prescriber works only from what you share. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ This applies to the pill only.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, tell the prescriber too: those medicines may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.¹³ Neither is a barrier to switching. They are the reason the questionnaire exists.

What you do not need to do

You do not need to ask your old provider's permission to leave, and you do not need to wait for a particular date. You simply start a new consultation with the new pharmacy. 05 · How your dose is decided

How your dose is decided when you switch

Your dose is decided by the new provider's prescriber after reviewing your answers, not carried over automatically. Mounjaro comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹ The prescriber looks at the strength you report, how long you have been on it, the date of your last injection and how you have tolerated treatment. They then decide which strength to start you on.

This is why accurate information matters more than any shortcut.

Understanding strengths and scale

The strengths run from 2.5mg up to 15mg, and doses step up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond. The BNF and SmPC set out the licensed dosing.¹¹ These are clinical decisions between you and your prescriber, and your new provider's aftercare should include dose-titration and follow-up reviews. What not to do

Do not adjust your own dose to fit what a new provider happens to stock. The leaflet and your prescriber set the correct way to use each pen.¹³ If you are unsure which strength to report, report what you actually used last and say so plainly.

What switching costs over a year

The cost of switching depends on your dose, because each strength has its own standard price, and the discounts apply on top. Planning a first year and what it means if you are switching

07 · Checking a new provider

How to check a new provider is safe

Before you switch, confirm the provider is a real, registered UK pharmacy. The General Pharmaceutical Council keeps a public register of pharmacies and pharmacy professionals, and you can search it by name or registration number.¹² Ours is GPhC registration 9012878, and you can verify it directly on the GPhC site. A legitimate provider displays its registration number plainly. If it does not, treat that as a warning.

Red flags worth walking away from

• Anyone offering to supply Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription. It is a prescription-only medicine.
• Social media sellers, marketplaces or messaging-app sellers rather than a registered pharmacy.
• Prices far below anything else you can find, with no explanation of the supply route.
• Dramatic weight-loss claims or promises of specific results.
• No named pharmacy, no registration number, and no way to contact a person.

The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting side effects and suspect products.⁷ If a pen looks wrong when it arrives, with damaged packaging or an unexpected label, do not use it, and contact the pharmacy and the MHRA.

08 · Dates, gaps and pens

Dates, gaps and your current pen

The prescriber needs your dates, and they decide how to proceed. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection, so tell the new prescriber the date of your last injection, how long you have been on your current strength and whether there has been any pause between providers. Allow time for the consultation, prescriber review, dispensing and delivery. Orders placed by 3pm dispatch the same day, and the prescriber may ask follow-up questions.

Telling the prescriber about a gap

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system.¹ There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. If your switch involves a pause, give the prescriber the exact dates of your last injection and how long you have been without treatment, and let them decide how to proceed with you.

Using up your current pen

Once a pen is in use, it can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. A pen that has been above 30°C or frozen must not be used, and the cap should stay on to protect it from light.¹³ Unopened pens are stored in the fridge until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. If you have an unopened spare pen from your old provider, check the leaflet and ask the new pharmacy, and tell the prescriber what you have left.

09 · NHS and private

Switching between NHS and private care

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or over with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

That framing matters for switching in two directions. Some people on private treatment wonder whether they can move to the NHS. Others on the NHS wonder whether they can move private. The honest route is to ask your GP what the local service offers and which group you fall into.

Moving from private to NHS

If you now meet the NHS criteria, talk to your GP and share your dose history. The prescriber decides what happens next, so be open about what you have taken and when.

Moving from NHS to private

If NHS supply ends, stops suiting you or you are not eligible under the current phase, a regulated private provider can take over after a consultation. Bring your NHS dose record in the same way as you would bring a private provider's record. The new prescriber will make their own assessment, and the same questions about contraception and other medicines apply.

10 · What to expect after switching

What to expect after you switch

Switching providers does not change the medicine, so it should not change what Mounjaro does for you. The molecule is tirzepatide, which activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, helping regulate appetite, slowing how quickly the stomach empties and improving how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹

What can change is the support around you: how reviews are done, how quickly you can reach someone and how your dose is monitored. Judge a provider on that, not on any promise about results.

Side effects and when to get help

Most side effects are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks.¹³ Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis), or for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems). Get medical help straight away for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion), as your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹³

What the trials show

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.² Trial averages do not predict your own result, and they do not tell you what any one provider will deliver.

Tirzepatide and semaglutide

In SURMOUNT-5, the first large head-to-head trial, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).¹⁵ Both are effective, licensed treatments, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone. In the STEP 1 trial, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg lost on average 14.9% over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.⁹ Only SURMOUNT-5 supports a direct comparison between the two.

Expect an early check-in, questions about side effects and a conversation about whether your dose still feels right.
