Can you switch GLP-1 providers, and how hard is it?

You can switch, and it is usually straightforward when the medicine and dose stay the same. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so the new pharmacy needs its own prescriber to review your suitability. That review is the main step, not a barrier. Providers differ in what they ask for and how they review. Some want a photo of your current pen label or box. Others ask for your treatment history. Be ready to say your current dose, when you last injected, and any side effects. Honest answers let the prescriber choose a safe starting point rather than guess.

04 · Preparing to switch

What to have ready

Gather your last dose, your injection day and a note of how you have tolerated treatment. A photo of your current pen label or box can help the new prescriber see your dose.

Do not stretch, split or alter doses to bridge a gap in supply. Order early enough that you do not run short.

If you need to move your injection day to fit a delivery, you can, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.¹ If you miss a dose, take it within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; after that, skip it and resume on your normal day.¹

05 · Dose after switching

Will I restart at 2.5mg?

Not automatically. Everyone starting Mounjaro for the first time begins on 2.5mg once a week, then steps up after at least 4 weeks to 5mg and in 2.5mg steps at a minimum of 4-week intervals to a maximum of 15mg, depending on response.¹ If you are already on a higher dose, the new prescriber decides where to continue based on your history, tolerance and how recently you injected. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better.¹

Your prescriber may suggest a different dose if there has been a long gap. That is a clinical judgement, so follow it rather than the dose on an old pen. Your options for switching GLP-1 meds are covered separately.

06 · Switching medicine

Switching provider vs switching medicine

Changing pharmacy is different from changing medicine, and the second needs clinical advice. Mounjaro and Wegovy are both licensed treatments, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice.

If you move to Wegovy, its own dose ladder applies: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least 4 weeks to reach 2.4mg from week 17.¹⁸ You would not carry a Mounjaro dose across. See our Wegovy pen page and all weight loss treatments.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.¹ Your prescriber advises on timing if you change medicine.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹

08 · NHS and private

NHS or private supply

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.
