If you want to switch Mounjaro providers because of price, service, stock availability or support, you can usually choose a different provider. However, switching is not the same as transferring a phone contract. Your prescription does not simply move from one provider to another.

Instead, the new provider carries out its own clinical assessment and, if appropriate, a new prescription is issued. This guide explains how the process works and what you can do to help make the change as smooth as possible.

Can You Switch Mounjaro Providers?

Yes. You are not tied to the pharmacy or clinic that first prescribed your Mounjaro. You can choose another provider if you want to change your service.

People may switch for different reasons, such as pricing, stock availability, communication or the level of support they receive.

It is important to remember that switching providers does not mean simply handing your existing prescription to a new pharmacy. Mounjaro is a prescription only medicine, so the new provider needs to carry out its own clinical assessment before deciding whether to prescribe it.

You Do Not Transfer a Prescription, You Get a New One

This is an important point to understand. A private prescription from one online provider does not simply transfer to another provider.

When you switch, the new provider's prescriber reviews your current treatment and decides whether continuing Mounjaro is appropriate. If they decide it is suitable, they issue a new prescription.

Having information about your current treatment can make this process easier. You may be asked to provide details such as your current dose, how long you have been taking Mounjaro and when you last received your medicine.

The new prescriber will still need to make their own clinical decision. This means the process is more than a paperwork handover, but having accurate treatment information available can help the new provider understand your situation.

Why There Is No Shared Record

Private weight management providers do not necessarily use the same clinical record system. This means your new provider may not automatically have access to your previous treatment records.

For this reason, it is useful to keep your own treatment information. Keep dispensing labels, order confirmations or other documents that show the strength of Mounjaro you have received and when you received it.

Your new provider may ask for an accurate treatment history or a photo of your prescription or dispensing label. Having this information ready can help the new prescriber review your treatment more easily.

What Your New Provider Needs From You

To review your treatment, a new provider may ask about:

  • Your current dose and how long you have been taking it.
  • How you have tolerated Mounjaro, including any side effects you have experienced.
  • Your treatment history, previous strengths and response to treatment.
  • Your current health and other medicines, including any changes to your medical history.
  • Any gaps in treatment, as these may affect the prescriber's decision about your next dose.

Having your recent dispensing labels or order information available can make the assessment easier and help your new provider understand your current treatment.

Will I Stay on the Same Dose?

You may stay on the same dose if your treatment has been stable and the new prescriber considers it appropriate. However, the new provider must make this decision after reviewing your circumstances, so your dose cannot be guaranteed before the assessment.

If you have had a gap in treatment, the prescriber may decide that a different or lower dose is more appropriate before continuing treatment. This can depend on how long you have been without Mounjaro and how you previously tolerated it.

Do not change your dose yourself when switching providers. Follow the instructions given by your new prescriber and ask them if you are unsure about your next dose.

How to Switch Without a Gap in Treatment

Planning ahead can help reduce the chance of running out of Mounjaro while you switch providers.

Consider starting the switching process while you still have around two to three weeks of treatment remaining. This gives the new provider time to complete its assessment and arrange your prescription and delivery.

A single KwikPen generally provides four once weekly doses, which is approximately four weeks of treatment. Processing and delivery times can vary between providers, so check these before your current supply runs out.

Continue following your usual dosing schedule unless your prescriber tells you otherwise. If your previous provider has an automatic payment or repeat order, check the terms and cancel it at the appropriate time once your new supply has been confirmed.

Some providers may offer an express assessment or delivery service. This may reduce waiting time, but it should not remove or shorten the clinical checks needed before prescribing.

Switching Provider vs Switching Medicine

Switching your provider and switching your medicine are two different things.

Switching provider means you continue using Mounjaro but receive it through a different pharmacy or weight management service.

Switching medicine means changing from Mounjaro to another treatment, such as Wegovy. This is a clinical decision that should be discussed with and assessed by your prescriber.

If you simply want to continue your current Mounjaro treatment with another provider, you are looking at a provider switch rather than a change of medicine.

How to Choose a Safe New Provider

Changing providers is also a good opportunity to check that your new service follows the appropriate pharmacy and prescribing requirements. Look for:

  • GPhC registration. You can check the pharmacy on the General Pharmaceutical Council's public register. Pharmacies operating in Great Britain must be registered with the relevant pharmacy regulator.
  • A genuine clinical assessment. A legitimate provider should assess your suitability before prescribing Mounjaro. Be cautious of services that appear to approve everyone without asking meaningful questions or checking important information.
  • Appropriate clinical oversight. Your treatment should be reviewed when needed, particularly if there are changes to your dose, health or medicines.
  • Clear information. A trustworthy provider should make it clear which pharmacy supplies the medicine, who is responsible for prescribing, what the treatment costs and what support is included.

Regulators continue to take action against illegal and unlicensed supplies of weight management medicines. Avoid providers that offer Mounjaro without an appropriate prescription or clinical assessment.

If a provider makes switching seem effortless because it does not ask any questions or carry out an assessment, treat that as a warning sign rather than a benefit.

Reasons People Switch

People switch Mounjaro providers for many reasons. You may be looking for a different price, better stock availability, clearer communication, more convenient delivery or a different level of support.

Whatever your reason, compare the whole service rather than looking at the medicine price alone. Check the cost of the medicine, consultation fees, delivery charges and any other applicable costs.

It is also worth checking how the provider handles clinical reviews, questions about side effects and changes to your treatment.

Prices, services and availability can change over time, so check the provider's current information before making your decision.
