Pure GLP-1: What It Means and Your UK Options (October 2026)

A pure GLP-1 medicine activates only the GLP-1 hormone receptor, whereas Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both GIP and GLP-1. Semaglutide (Wegovy) and liraglutide are single-action examples; "Pure" is not a licensed UK medicine name. Licensed options start with a free consultation, and the Mounjaro 2.5mg pen is £169.99 per month at the standard price. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • "Pure GLP-1" describes how a drug works (one receptor), not a brand or a product you can buy by that name.
  • Mounjaro is not a pure GLP-1: tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.
  • Wegovy (semaglutide) and liraglutide are single-action GLP-1 medicines, each licensed in the UK and prescription-only.
  • Be cautious of any product sold as "pure" GLP-1 without a consultation or prescription: check the GPhC register first.
  • Which medicine suits you is a prescriber decision based on your health, history and goals, not on the label "pure".
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What does "pure GLP-1" actually mean?

"Pure GLP-1" is shorthand for a medicine that acts on the GLP-1 receptor and nothing else. It is a description of mechanism, not a brand, a grade of purity or a product category you can order by name. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, is the best-known example, and liraglutide is another.

Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 So Mounjaro is a dual-action medicine, not a pure GLP-1.

What matters is the active ingredient, the licence and who prescribed it, and we do not supply anything sold as "pure GLP-1".

02 · Comparison

Pure GLP-1 versus dual-action: the practical differences

The main difference is the number of hormone pathways targeted. A single-action medicine works through GLP-1 only. A dual-action medicine adds GIP, which the Mounjaro SmPC describes alongside GLP-1 in regulating appetite and the body's response to insulin.1

For a direct comparison of results, the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide against semaglutide is SURMOUNT-5, which you can read in full.15

03 · Your next step

Is a pure GLP-1 relevant to you, and what next?

For most people the better question is not "pure or dual?" but "which licensed medicine is appropriate for me?" That depends on your health history, other medicines, previous treatment and what you want from it. A GPhC-registered prescriber weighs those factors in a consultation.

If you want to explore tirzepatide, you can start a free consultation for the Mounjaro pen, with prices and consultation. The 2.5mg starting pen is £169.99 per month at the standard price, and new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40. If you would rather consider semaglutide, see the Wegovy pen. Our weight loss clinic page explains the broader options.

Either way, prescription-only medicines are supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and they work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

04 · How these medicines work

How GLP-1 medicines work

GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone released after eating. GLP-1 medicines mimic it, which helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties and supports the body's response to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Once a pen is in use it can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days, and then must be thrown away; unopened pens belong in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use. Your patient information leaflet has the full storage guidance.13

05 · What the trial evidence shows

What the trial evidence shows

Mounjaro has a large trial behind it. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result.

As a worked example only: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is arithmetic on a trial average, not a forecast of what you will lose.

Semaglutide has its own trial, STEP 1, over 68 weeks.9 Results from separate trials in different groups should not be set side by side as if they were a head-to-head test. The head-to-head comparison is the SURMOUNT-5 trial.15 Your prescriber can talk you through what it means for you.

06 · Spotting unsafe "pure" products

How to spot unsafe "pure" GLP-1 products

Any product marketed as "pure GLP-1" should be checked before you consider it. Genuine GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines in the UK are prescription-only, so a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.7

A short checklist helps:

  • Is the seller on the GPhC register, and can you find its registration number?
  • Is the active ingredient named, and is it a UK-licensed medicine such as tirzepatide, semaglutide or liraglutide?
  • Does the seller offer a consultation reviewed by a prescriber?
  • Does it promise specific results or use dramatic weight-loss claims? That is a red flag.
  • Is it described as a supplement, a drop, a patch or a spray rather than a licensed medicine?

If you have had any unexpected reaction to a medicine or product, report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

07 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6 Your GP can tell you where you stand locally. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

If you go private, the route is simple. You complete a free online consultation and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Our pharmacy dispenses it, and delivery is free, next-day and tracked in temperature-controlled packaging. Same-day dispatch applies when ordered by 3pm.

08 · Other forms you may see

Tablets, drops and other forms

Not every GLP-1 product is an injection. Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron) are licensed tablet options, each described in its own product information.2021

Drops, sprays, patches and "nature's GLP-1" supplements are a different matter. They are low-cost products with no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardised, and they are not licensed equivalents of the prescription medicines.

Wegovy's own pens follow a set ladder: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 Liraglutide is a daily injection supplied at 6mg/ml, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

When any page, ad or seller uses "pure" as a selling point, ask what it means. Purity is a manufacturing standard that applies to every licensed medicine. The active ingredient and the licence tell you what you are getting.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do GLP-1 products really work?
Licensed GLP-1 medicines have trial evidence behind them. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 20.9% of body weight on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. Individual results vary, and unlicensed "GLP-1" supplements and drops do not carry that evidence.
Is there a strongest GLP-1 for weight loss?
No licensed medicine is strongest for everyone. The first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide against semaglutide is SURMOUNT-5. Suitability, side effects, other medicines and your goals matter. A GPhC-registered prescriber can advise which licensed option fits you.
Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?
No. GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone and a class of medicines that mimic it. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual-action medicine that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).
Which GLP-1 is best for weight loss in the UK?
There is no single best option for everyone. Mounjaro, Wegovy and liraglutide are all licensed in the UK, differing in mechanism, dosing and how often you inject. A prescriber reviews your health history and preferences, then recommends what is appropriate. Start with a free consultation, with no obligation.
Who cannot take GLP-1 medicines?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
Do I qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS?
NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Ask your GP where you stand locally.
Is "Pure Health GLP-1" a licensed medicine?
"Pure Health GLP-1" is not a licensed UK medicine name, and we do not supply anything under it. Check the active ingredient, whether a prescriber is involved and whether the seller is on the GPhC register. Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
Where can I start treatment with a licensed GLP-1 medicine?
Begin with a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. If approved, our registered pharmacy dispenses your medicine and ships it free, next-day and tracked. You can look at the Mounjaro pen or the Wegovy pen, and there are no subscriptions.
