GLP-1 Max Explained: Supplement Claims vs Licensed Treatment (October 2026)

"GLP-1 Max" is not a licensed medicine. The phrase usually refers to over-the-counter supplements with names like "GLP-1 Burn Max" or "Ultimate GLP-1", which do not contain a prescription GLP-1 medicine. Licensed options such as Mounjaro need a prescriber's review, and their highest strength is 15mg. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • "GLP-1 Max" is a marketing phrase, usually for supplements, and not the name of a licensed UK medicine.
  • Prescription GLP-1 treatments are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber and used alongside diet and activity.
  • If you mean the maximum dose, Mounjaro's highest strength is 15mg, reached stepwise rather than started at.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims on supplement pages are not backed by the trial evidence behind licensed medicines.
  • Your first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What does "GLP-1 Max" actually mean?

"GLP-1 Max" is not the name of any medicine licensed in the UK.

Supplements sold with GLP-1 in the name are low-cost products available without assessment. They are not the same as prescription medicines, and the name does not mean they act on the body in the same way. Licensed medicines are tested in large trials and assessed by the regulator. Supplements do not go through that process for weight-loss claims.

If you are researching the "maximum" strength of a real GLP-1 medicine, the relevant fact is that Mounjaro comes in six strengths. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1 The top strength is 15mg, but people do not start there. Treatment begins at 2.5mg and steps up under prescriber review, and many people settle at a lower dose that works for them.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?

If you have been taking a "GLP-1" supplement and want to know whether it is doing anything meaningful, the honest answer is that nothing in the evidence base supports comparing it with a prescription medicine. That does not mean you have done anything dangerous. It means the sensible next step is to ask whether a licensed treatment is appropriate for you, and to tell any prescriber about everything you take, supplements included.

Licensed treatment is for adults who meet the criteria for weight management. Our consultation is free, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. If you are weighing up the options, our weight loss clinic page explains the pathway.

On cost, your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price. You can see all six strengths on the Mounjaro pen page, and all six doses are in stock.

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Individual results vary, and a supplement label cannot change that.

03 · What GLP-1 means

What GLP-1 is and how licensed medicines use it

GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar control.

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

That dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1 It also explains why the word "max" is slightly misleading even for prescription medicines. There is no switch that maximises a GLP-1 effect. The medicine is given at a prescribed strength, stepped up carefully, and the right strength is the one that works for you with side effects you can tolerate.

It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is a once-weekly injection, which is a very different thing from a daily capsule or powder sold with a GLP-1 label.

It is worth separating the idea of a hormone from the idea of a product. A hormone can be mentioned in a product name for marketing purposes without the product containing anything that acts on the same receptors in a measurable way. The licensed medicine, by contrast, has a defined active ingredient, a defined strength, a patient information leaflet and a regulator behind it. When you read a label, ask what the active ingredient is and whether it has a product licence for the claim being made.

If you want a plain-English walkthrough of how these medicines differ from natural food-based approaches, our page on pure GLP-1 products looks at the same question from the supplement side. The key point to take away here is that GLP-1 describes a biological target, and only prescription medicines have been shown in trials to act on it enough to change weight meaningfully.

Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with any prescribed pen, and ask your prescriber about anything that is unclear.13

04 · Do supplements work?

Does GLP-1 Max work? The supplement question

A product name that includes GLP-1 is not evidence of anything.

There are several reasons for caution. First, supplements are not assessed by the medicines regulator for weight-loss claims in the way licensed medicines are. Second, the ingredients and amounts on supplement labels are not standardised across brands, so two products with similar names can differ widely. Third, marketing language such as "burn", "max" and "ultimate" is designed to attract attention rather than describe a tested effect.

Some pages describe ingredients such as berberine as "nature's Ozempic". That phrase is a slogan, not a finding. It is a low-cost supplement with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. If you are already taking something like this, tell your prescriber or pharmacist, because supplements can still interact with other things you take.

None of this means that every supplement is harmful. It means that a supplement cannot be treated as a substitute for a prescription medicine, and a label that implies otherwise should be read sceptically. The sensible questions to ask are simple. What is the active ingredient? Has it been tested in a trial for the claim being made? Who reviews your health before you take it? For a prescription GLP-1 medicine, the answers are clear. For a supplement, they usually are not.

There is also a practical cost to a product that does not work: time. If you spend months on something with no meaningful effect, you have delayed finding out whether a licensed treatment would suit you. Our guide to AMPK and GLP-1 looks at the biology that supplement marketing often borrows, and explains why a related pathway is not the same as the same effect.

Be especially careful of sellers offering to supply a prescription GLP-1 medicine without a consultation or prescription. That is not a legitimate route, and the products offered may be counterfeit or unsafe. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7 If something you bought causes a worrying reaction, report it through Yellow Card.19

For a real weight-management plan, the starting point is a conversation with a prescriber, not a product page. Diet, activity and, where appropriate, a licensed medicine give you a plan with evidence behind it, and a follow-up route if things do not go as expected.

05 · The maximum dose

How much GLP-1 can I take? The maximum Mounjaro dose

For Mounjaro, the highest strength is 15mg once weekly, and nobody starts there. Treatment begins at the lowest strength and steps up under review, so the pen you start with is the 2.5mg strength. The pen strengths are 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Our page on max Mounjaro covers how people reach the upper end of that range.

A higher strength is not automatically better. The right dose is the one your prescriber agrees is working for you with side effects you can manage.

The headline trial for tirzepatide in weight management is SURMOUNT-1. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.2 Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2 Notice what these numbers show: the lower strengths also produced substantial average results, which is why many people do not need the top strength.

As a worked example only, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

Planning the cost of the upper end is straightforward. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

Your prescriber sets the schedule, and it should only change through a review.

06 · Mounjaro and GLP-1

Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro? Comparing the options

Mounjaro is a GLP-1 medicine, but it is not only a GLP-1 medicine. It activates the GLP-1 receptor and a second gut-hormone receptor, GIP, at the same time. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, acts on the GLP-1 receptor alone. So "GLP-1" is the family name, and Mounjaro and Wegovy are different members with different actions.

You may see names such as Ozempil or other near-misspellings online. Check the exact spelling and the seller carefully, and only use a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register. Our registration number is GPhC 9012878, and you can check it on the public register.

Wegovy has its own approved dose ladder: pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18 You can see current options on the Wegovy pen page.

Which is best for weight loss? There is no single answer for everyone; your prescriber decides what suits you. Each trial recruited different people under different conditions, so setting their results side by side is not a fair comparison.

The same caution applies to the question of which medicine makes you lose weight the fastest. Results vary from person to person. A treatment that you can take consistently, with a dose your body tolerates, will usually do more than one you cannot continue.

Liraglutide, supplied under names such as Saxenda, is another GLP-1 medicine. It is supplied at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. For anything beyond that, figures vary and your prescriber can advise.

Tablets exist too, including oral semaglutide and orforglipron. If tablets interest you, ask during your consultation, and see current options on our product pages.

The practical takeaway is that "GLP-1" on its own tells you very little. Look for the active ingredient, the strength and whether a prescriber is involved.

07 · Safety and eligibility

Who cannot take GLP-1, and what should not be combined

Not everyone is suitable for a prescription GLP-1 medicine, and that is exactly why a prescriber reviews each order. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Eligibility for weight management depends on factors such as BMI and weight-related conditions.

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.13 If treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

On interactions, there are two points we can state clearly. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Your prescriber can advise on what to do about this, and the MHRA has published guidance on contraception with these medicines.7 Second, if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. That is a conversation to have with your prescriber, not a reason to stop anything yourself.

If you have type 2 diabetes, tell both your prescriber and your usual diabetes team. Mounjaro is also licensed for type 2 diabetes, where it improves blood sugar control (HbA1c) and supports weight loss. Treatment and monitoring are coordinated differently, so care should stay joined up.1

Supplements deserve a mention in this context as well. Even if they are not medicines, they can still matter when a prescriber reviews what you take. Mention them honestly, including products with GLP-1 in the name.

Is GLP-1 treatment safe for weight loss? Licensed medicines are used under the supervision of a prescriber because they carry known side effects and cautions, which are set out in the leaflet. If you notice a new symptom, tell your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so you stay in control of each order.

08 · Stopping treatment

What happens when you stop taking GLP-1?

When you stop a GLP-1 medicine, the drug leaves your system gradually rather than all at once. For tirzepatide, after a final dose it takes four to five weeks to clear the system, there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That is a statement about the medicine in your body, not a prediction about your weight or appetite.

What happens to your appetite and weight after stopping varies between people. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.14

The sensible time to talk about stopping is at one of your regular reviews. Your prescriber can discuss why you want to stop, whether a lower dose might be enough, and how to build habits that carry on without the medicine. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so the habits you form during treatment are an important part of the outcome.

This is also the honest comparison with a supplement. If you stop a supplement, there is typically no clinical plan around it, because there was none to begin with. With a prescription treatment, you have a prescriber who knows your history and can guide a sensible stop or step-down.

Practical points are worth planning too. If you have unused pens, keep them as advised in the leaflet, and ask the pharmacy or prescriber before throwing anything away. Do not share pens, and do not carry on using a pen beyond its in-use window. Once a KwikPen is in use, it can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Unopened pens go in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use, and keep until the printed expiry date.

If you restart after a gap, do not assume you can go straight back to your old strength. A prescriber should decide where to restart, because the dose you tolerated before may not be right after a break. That is one more reason to keep the prescribing team in the loop rather than managing a pause alone.

Finally, if you are stopping because of side effects or worry, say so. Support is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413, and our free companion app, GLPTrackr, can help you keep a record of how you feel through the process.

09 · NHS and private routes

NHS or private: how to get a real GLP-1 treatment

The honest picture is that NHS access exists but is being phased in. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6 Ask your GP what is available locally.

If you choose a private route, the checks that matter are simple. Is the pharmacy on the GPhC register? Does a prescriber review your health before anything is supplied? Is the medicine a genuine branded pen? Our supply is official LillyDirect supply, meaning Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with genuine KwikPens and all six doses stocked from 2.5mg to 15mg.

Ordering follows three clear steps. First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, the order is dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order.

On cost, the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the Mounjaro price range runs from £143.96 to £339.00 per pen as of 11 October 2026. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, or use Klarna and pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions.

For comparison, the NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item where it applies, but NHS access to weight-management medicines depends on the criteria above rather than on paying a charge.

Beware of unverified sellers. Offers to supply a prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription are a red flag, and counterfeit pens are a known risk, which is why the MHRA publishes alerts.7 You can check any pharmacy on the GPhC register in moments.

When you are ready, the Mounjaro pen page has current prices and the consultation. If you want to explore your options first, our weight loss clinic guide is a good starting point. See the NHS overview of tirzepatide for more on how it is used.5

10 · Storage and safe use

Storing and using a prescription pen safely

Unopened Mounjaro pens belong in the fridge until you first use them. Store them at 2–8°C, and they keep until the printed expiry date.13 If you have a question about an unopened pen that has spent time out of the fridge, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy rather than guessing.

Once a pen is in use, it can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away.1 Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen. Keep the pen cap on to protect it from light. Follow the pen's instructions for injecting, and do not invent your own technique or hold times.

The pen is a multi-dose device, which is why the strength matters so much. If you are struggling with side effects at a dose, talk to your prescriber about the plan rather than adjusting it yourself.

Delivery is designed to protect the medicine. Orders travel in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging, tracked by DPD, and should be put into the fridge promptly once they arrive. If a pen arrives damaged or is the wrong item, contact us within 3 days. Dispensed prescription medicines cannot otherwise be returned, and refunds take 5–10 working days where they apply.

Sharps need careful handling. Needles and a sharps bin are included with each order, and used needles should go into the bin rather than the household rubbish. Keep pens and needles out of the reach of children, and never share a pen with anyone, even if the needle is changed.

Supplements do not have this kind of defined storage and use framework. Their instructions vary, and dosing is not standardised. That is another practical difference: with a licensed pen, you know what is inside it, how it should be stored and how long it remains usable.

Finally, remember that safe use includes keeping a record. The free GLPTrackr app helps you track your journey on iOS or Android, and your prescriber can use that information at your monthly review. If something does not feel right, tell your prescriber, and consider reporting suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 For a broader look at related products and names you may have come across, see our guides to trapezoid GLP-1 and PHM GLP-1.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does GLP-1 Max work?
Supplements are not assessed for weight-loss claims the way licensed medicines are, and their ingredients and dosing are not standardised. Licensed treatments such as Mounjaro have trial evidence, are prescribed after a review by a GPhC-registered prescriber and are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.
Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?
No. GLP-1 is a gut hormone and the name of a drug family, while Mounjaro is a specific brand of tirzepatide. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Semaglutide, in Wegovy and Ozempic, acts on the GLP-1 receptor alone. So Mounjaro is a GLP-1 medicine, but it is not only a GLP-1 medicine, and a product with GLP-1 in its name is not necessarily Mounjaro.
How much GLP-1 can I take?
With Mounjaro, the strengths are 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg once weekly, and treatment starts at 2.5mg rather than at the top. Your prescriber steps the dose up under review and decides what suits you, so many people settle below 15mg. For a supplement, dosing is not standardised, so check with a pharmacist first.
Who cannot take GLP-1?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Eligibility for weight management also depends on factors such as BMI and weight-related conditions. Complete the free consultation honestly, and if treatment is unsuitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
What drugs should not be taken with GLP-1?
Do not stop or change any medicine yourself; ask your prescriber. Two points are clear. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. Tell your prescriber about everything you take, including supplements and anything bought without a prescription, so interactions can be checked.
What is the best GLP-1 for weight loss?
There is no single best GLP-1 for everyone. Mounjaro and Wegovy are both licensed treatments, and the choice depends on your health, tolerance and what a prescriber advises. Supplements sold with GLP-1 in the name are not comparable, because they are not licensed medicines. A prescriber can help you decide which suits you.
What happens when you stop taking GLP-1?
Tirzepatide clears gradually: after a final dose it takes four to five weeks to leave the system, there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. What happens to appetite and weight afterwards varies between people. Talk to your prescriber before stopping, ideally at a review, so you can plan around diet and activity. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
Is GLP-1 safe to use for weight loss?
Licensed GLP-1 medicines are used under a prescriber's supervision because they carry known cautions and side effects, which are set out in the patient information leaflet. Safety depends on the individual, so a prescriber reviews your health before supplying them. Supplements sold as GLP-1 products are not assessed in the same way. If you notice a new symptom on any product, speak to your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Which GLP makes you lose weight the fastest?
No option can be named as fastest, and results vary from person to person. Results vary from person to person, and trial averages do not predict your own result. Each trial recruited different people under different conditions, so comparing their numbers is not fair. Consistency with a dose you tolerate, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, usually matters more than chasing speed. Be wary of products promising dramatic results.
