GLP-1 Plaster: Do GLP-1 Weight Loss Patches Work? (October 2026)

No, a GLP-1 plaster or patch is not a licensed medicine in the UK, and the adhesive patches sold online do not contain semaglutide or tirzepatide. They are marketed as supplements, usually with herbal or vitamin ingredients, so they cannot be treated as an alternative to prescription treatment. Licensed GLP-1 treatment is currently given as an injection or, more recently, as a tablet, after a prescriber's review.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • A GLP-1 plaster is not a licensed UK medicine, and patches sold online do not contain prescription GLP-1 ingredients.
  • Patch ingredients and strengths are not standardised, and they carry none of the clinical trial evidence behind licensed treatments.
  • Licensed options are prescription-only injections and tablets, supplied after review by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
  • Mounjaro trial results come from a once-weekly injection used alongside diet and activity, never from a patch.
  • If a seller offers GLP-1 patches without a consultation or prescription, treat it as a red flag.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Is there such a thing as a GLP-1 plaster?

No licensed GLP-1 plaster exists in the UK that we are aware of. The products sold under names like "GLP-1 patch" or "slimming patch" are sold as consumer supplements, not as medicines that have been assessed for safety, quality and effect.

The name is the trick. A medicine is a GLP-1 medicine because it contains a GLP-1 receptor agonist and has been through a licensing process. Putting "GLP-1" on a sticker does not make the contents that. The honest test is simple: does the product have a UK marketing authorisation, a patient information leaflet and a pharmacist or prescriber behind it? A supplement patch has none of these.

Mounjaro, by contrast, is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is supplied as a pre-filled pen, not a patch.

03 · Your next step

What to do instead of buying a patch

If your goal is meaningful weight loss, the useful decision is whether you are a suitable candidate for licensed treatment. That is a conversation with a prescriber, not a purchase from a social media advert.

Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and it is a prescription-only medicine supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 Our consultation is free, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. If you are curious about the route, our guide to when clinical assessment is needed explains what a prescriber looks at.

Ready to look at the real option? You can see current doses on the Mounjaro pen page. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price. Prices checked 10 October 2026. For the broader picture, see our weight loss clinic.

04 · What patches contain

What GLP-1 patches actually contain

Most products sold as GLP-1 patches list plant extracts, vitamins or minerals rather than any prescription ingredient. Names that come up repeatedly in the marketing are berberine, green tea extract and chromium. These are the same kinds of ingredients found in ordinary supplements.

Because they are supplements, the amount of each ingredient is not standardised, and nobody has to show that the product delivers what the label implies through the skin. That is a very different standard from a medicine, where the dose, purity and manufacturing are checked before it can be sold.

You may also see the phrase "nature's Ozempic" used for berberine and similar ingredients. This is a marketing slogan, not a medical description. It borrows the name of a prescription medicine to make a low-cost supplement sound equivalent, and it is not.

05 · Why claims fall short

Why the claims do not stand up

The core problem is that there is no trial showing a GLP-1 patch produces the weight loss associated with licensed medicines. When a seller quotes impressive-sounding results, ask which study, in which product, in which people. In almost every case the figures are borrowed from injections and attached to a different product.

That borrowing is the central deception. The trial results people associate with GLP-1 treatment belong to specific licensed medicines taken at specific doses. They say nothing about a sticker with herbal ingredients.

Watch for these warning signs in an advert or product page:

  • Dramatic weight-loss claims with specific amounts or timescales.
  • Language that implies the patch is the same as Wegovy or Mounjaro.
  • Before-and-after images and personal stories presented as proof.
  • No pharmacy registration, no leaflet and no way to speak to a pharmacist.
  • A promise that no diet or activity change is needed.

None of these are evidence. A genuine medicine is described with a leaflet, a licence and a regulated supplier, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

06 · Safety and scams

Safety: counterfeits, scams and side effects

The biggest safety risk around GLP-1 products is buying from sellers who are not regulated. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7 If a website offers to supply GLP-1 medicines, or items that claim to be them, without a consultation or prescription, do not buy from it.

You can check a UK pharmacy on the public register of the General Pharmaceutical Council. Ours is registered as GPhC 9012878, and you can check it at the GPhC register.

The contents of patches differ from product to product and are not standardised, so their effects are unpredictable. If you have used one and developed a skin reaction or any other new symptom, stop using it, speak to a pharmacist or your prescriber, and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

If you are weighing up side effects of licensed medicines instead, our guide to GLP-1 side effects and how to manage them covers what to expect.

07 · How real GLP-1 treatment works

How licensed GLP-1 treatment works

Licensed treatment works by acting on gut-hormone receptors that regulate appetite. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).

Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Treatment starts low and steps up.

The licensed Wegovy route follows a similar stepped pattern with its own ladder: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly. You can read about it on the Wegovy pen page.

08 · What the evidence shows

What the evidence shows for licensed treatment

The weight-loss evidence people associate with GLP-1 treatment comes from injectable medicines in large trials, not from patches. For Mounjaro, the key study is SURMOUNT-1.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

A worked example makes it concrete: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is the straight arithmetic of the trial average, not a prediction for any individual, and it applies only to tirzepatide at the top dose in that trial.

The contrast is clear. There is a published trial for the injection. There is no equivalent for a GLP-1 plaster, so any figure attached to one is borrowed.

09 · Tablets and other formats

Is there a needle-free option?

If the appeal of a plaster is avoiding injections, the licensed needle-free route is a tablet. Oral GLP-1 medicines exist, with their own product information: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo each have a UK summary of product characteristics.2021

Our guide to oral GLP-1 weight loss explains how the tablets work, who they suit and how they differ from the weekly pen.

The difference from a patch is regulatory as much as medical. A tablet or pen has been through licensing, so you get a leaflet, a defined dose and a prescriber who can adjust it.

10 · NHS access

NHS access and slimming patches

The NHS does not supply slimming patches as weight-management treatment, and a supplement patch should not be confused with NHS-provided medicines. What the NHS does provide is access to licensed treatment on a phased basis.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

To find out whether you qualify, speak to your GP. If you choose the private route, our Mounjaro online prescription guide sets out how the consultation and prescriber review work.

11 · Lifestyle shortcuts

Drinks, tricks and quick fixes

No drink burns fat in the way those headlines suggest. A drink can help only by replacing higher-calorie drinks with lower-calorie ones, which is an ordinary calorie effect.

The "Japanese trick" to lose weight is another viral label. Treat any single trick promising rapid change with caution.

A fixed target such as losing a set amount in a few weeks is not realistic for anyone. Results vary between people, and trial results are averages over long periods rather than short windows. What does have evidence is a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, with or without licensed medicine, supported by regular review.

If you are drawn to a patch because you want something simple, the simplest evidence-based version is a weekly injection or a daily tablet taken as prescribed, plus changes to food and movement that you can keep up.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is a GLP-1 patch?
A GLP-1 patch is an adhesive skin patch marketed online as a way to copy the effects of GLP-1 weight loss medicines. It is sold as a supplement, usually with herbal or vitamin ingredients, and does not contain semaglutide or tirzepatide. It is not a licensed UK medicine and has no clinical trial evidence of its own.
Do GLP-1 patches work?
There is no trial evidence that a GLP-1 plaster or patch produces the weight loss seen with licensed GLP-1 medicines. The results people quote come from injections such as Mounjaro, taken at set doses alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A patch with supplement ingredients has no such evidence behind it.
Do any weight loss patches really work?
We are not aware of any weight loss patch that has been licensed as a medicine in the UK or shown in large trials to cause meaningful weight loss. Their ingredients and strengths are not standardised and they come with no clinical oversight. Licensed injections and tablets are the evidence-based options, assessed by a prescriber.
Does a slim patch really work on the NHS?
The NHS does not provide slimming patches as a weight-management treatment. What it offers is access to licensed medicines, phased in over several years. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, with the primary-care rollout starting in June 2025 for the highest-need groups first. Your GP can tell you whether you qualify.
What are the side effects of weight loss patches?
Patch contents vary and are not standardised or assessed like medicines. If you develop a skin reaction or any new symptom, stop using it, speak to a pharmacist or prescriber and report it via the Yellow Card scheme.
Do I qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout will take years, so ask your GP where you fit.
How can I lose weight safely without a patch?
A reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity are the foundation. If you are eligible, licensed treatment such as Mounjaro is used alongside those changes, not instead of them. SURMOUNT-1 showed average loss of 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone, but individual results vary.
How do I get genuine GLP-1 treatment in the UK?
Genuine treatment is prescription-only. You complete a free online consultation, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, and if suitable the medicine is dispensed by a registered pharmacy and delivered. We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Be wary of any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
