A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Taking a prescription medicine without a prescription, from an unregulated seller, or for a reason it was not prescribed is misuse, whatever the goal.
  • Mounjaro is licensed for weight management only for adults who meet BMI criteria, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every consultation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years, so many eligible people choose regulated private treatment instead.
  • Your first 2.5mg pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40; every later order is £25 off the standard price.

01

What to do instead of misusing prescription drugs for weight loss

The safe alternative to misuse is a licensed weight-management medicine, prescribed to you after a proper assessment. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.1 It is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

Misuse usually means one of four things: taking a medicine that was never prescribed to you, taking someone else's supply, buying from a seller who offers to supply without a consultation or prescription, or using a medicine for weight loss when it was prescribed for something else. All four remove the one safeguard that matters, which is a clinician checking whether the medicine suits you.

Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding.111 If you do not meet those criteria, the honest answer is that Mounjaro is not licensed for you, and we would not suggest working around that.

What it costs and how to start

The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg starter pen, which lasts four weeks. Every later order is £25 off the standard price automatically (code DOSE25). Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider, checked 10 October 2026. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid.

Ordering takes three steps. First, complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses and ships it, with same-day dispatch when you order by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. All six doses are in stock.

If your concern is that you are already using something you were not prescribed, stop sourcing it from unregulated sellers and talk to your GP or pharmacist. If you are worried about your relationship with food, eating or weight, a GP is the right first call before any weight-loss medicine.

02 · What counts as misuse

What counts as prescription drug misuse for weight loss

Prescription drug misuse for weight loss means using a prescription-only medicine in a way a prescriber has not approved for you. That covers taking medicine prescribed to someone else, buying it without a prescription, and using it for weight loss when it was prescribed for another purpose. It also covers taking it differently from the way your prescriber directed. The common thread is that no clinician has weighed the benefits and risks for you personally.

For any medicine other than Mounjaro, figures and risks vary, and your prescriber or pharmacist can advise on your specific situation.

Tirzepatide is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is a prescription-only medicine, which means the law puts a clinician between you and the pen for good reasons. Those reasons include checking your BMI, your medical history and your current medicines.11

It helps to separate three situations that are often lumped together:

  • Unprescribed use: taking a medicine nobody has assessed you for. This is misuse even if the medicine is genuine.
  • Unregulated supply: buying from a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. The product may be genuine, counterfeit or something else entirely, and you cannot tell from the outside.
  • Off-purpose use: using a medicine for weight loss that was prescribed for another condition, without a conversation about whether that is appropriate.

None of these is the same as being prescribed a licensed weight-management medicine and taking it as directed. That distinction matters because people sometimes feel shame about wanting medical help with weight, and slip into the first category as a result. Asking for a proper assessment is not a loophole and not a failure.

03 · Why people reach for shortcuts

Why people reach for shortcuts, and why the licence matters

People reach for unprescribed weight-loss drugs because weight feels urgent, and the legitimate routes can seem slow, expensive or judgemental. Those are real pressures, and they deserve a straight answer rather than a lecture. The honest position is that a shortcut which skips assessment also skips the checks that protect you.

The licence is the practical expression of those checks. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 That wording tells you something important: the medicine is designed as part of a plan, not as a replacement for one.

A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.11 That step is where an interaction, a contraindication or an unsuitable situation gets caught. Someone self-sourcing a pen has no such step, and no one to call if something feels wrong.

It also matters what the licence does not cover. If your BMI is below the licensed thresholds, Mounjaro is not licensed for weight management for you. We say that plainly because some sellers will supply to anyone, which is a warning sign rather than a convenience. A seller that does not ask about your health is not offering you a better deal. It is offering you less safety.

There are real reasons the process can feel slow, and we try to remove the avoidable friction. The consultation is a short health questionnaire, free, with no obligation. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. In other words, you do not lose money by asking the question.

For anything we do not supply, we would rather you speak to your GP than guess.

The pressure to lose weight quickly is understandable, but it is also the exact moment when an unregulated seller's promise of fast, dramatic results sounds most convincing. Treat promises of dramatic weight-loss results as a reason to slow down, not speed up. A regulated service will not promise specific results, because results vary from person to person.

04 · How Mounjaro actually works

How Mounjaro works, and why it is not a quick fix

Mounjaro works by activating two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1, which together help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.1 It is the first treatment of its kind to do this. In practice most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That final clause is the point. The medicine makes eating less easier; it does not do the eating less for you. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).

Two practical points follow from the mechanism, and both bear on misuse.

It stays in your system. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 This is one reason an unsupervised approach is risky: you cannot reverse a dose you regret by waiting a day or two.

It comes in six strengths. The multi-dose KwikPen is available as 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 The range exists so a prescriber can move you through strengths in a planned way. The right strength for you is a clinical decision, and your prescriber sets it.

Why does the mechanism matter for misuse? Because some sellers describe weight-loss injections as if they were a switch. They are not. The effect depends on appetite changes that work with a reduced-calorie diet, and it depends on a plan, reviews and follow-up. Our team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, plus side-effect support, because that is what responsible prescribing involves.

For side effects, the patient information leaflet that comes with every pen is the reference to use.13 If you notice a symptom that worries you, speak to your prescriber, and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme. We also include needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance with every order, so you are not left working out the pen from a video.

05 · What the trials show

What the trial evidence says, and what it does not

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2 Treatment worked alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

A worked example makes the percentages concrete. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg and 15% is about 15 kg. That is straight arithmetic on the trial averages, not a prediction for you, and trial averages do not predict your own result.

Why does this matter for misuse? Because the efficacy numbers are often quoted by sellers to justify cutting corners. The numbers describe people who were part of a structured trial with oversight. They do not show what happens when someone uses an unverified product, buys without an assessment or follows an online regime. Nothing in the trial supports self-directed use outside a prescriber's plan.

Results from different trials, with different people, durations and doses, should not be set against each other to say one medicine is better or safer. Both Mounjaro and semaglutide products are licensed prescription medicines, and the right one for you depends on your health, other medicines and goals. That is a conversation for a prescriber, and a reason to avoid sellers who pronounce a winner without knowing anything about you.

When you assess any claim you read, ask four questions. Which trial is it from? Who took part? Over how long? And did participants have clinical oversight? If a page quotes dramatic figures without naming the trial, treat it with caution. The lifestyle component is part of the result, not an optional extra.

06 · NHS versus private access

NHS or private: who qualifies and what the waiting means

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more qualifying conditions.6 Full rollout is expected to take years.

So who qualifies for Mounjaro on the NHS? The answer depends on where the rollout has reached in your area, which only your GP can confirm. The NICE recommendation sets the criteria; the phasing decides when you personally might be reached. The NHS guide to tirzepatide describes the medicine for type 2 diabetes and obesity and is a good neutral reference.5 If you do not yet meet the NHS criteria, or you are waiting, it does not mean you must go without assessment.

This gap is exactly where misuse tends to creep in. Someone who is eligible for the licence but not yet for NHS supply may feel stuck, and decide to find a pen elsewhere. The better option is regulated private treatment, which applies the same licensed criteria: BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition.1 Note the difference from NICE's NHS threshold. The licence is broader than the NHS rollout, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose private treatment rather than waiting.

Private does not mean unreviewed. At EverydayMeds every consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically. There is no subscription lock-in, and you can pay by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options.

What about prescription charges? The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90, but weight-management supply on the NHS is governed by the rollout and the services your area offers. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

If you are considering both routes, they are not mutually exclusive in time. Some people start privately and move to NHS care when they are reached. Tell whichever prescriber you see about everything you take. A complete picture helps your prescriber spot an interaction, and it only works if you share it.

07 · Buying safely, avoiding counterfeits

Buying safely: unregulated sellers, counterfeits and what to check

The safest way to buy a weight-loss injection is from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, after a consultation reviewed by a prescriber. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is outside the rules and should be avoided.

The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme, and it is the right place to check current warnings.7

Here is a practical checklist for any provider, including us:

  • Check the register. The GPhC public register lists registered pharmacies. Ours is registration 9012878, and you can look it up directly.12
  • Expect a consultation. A genuine prescription service asks about your health and has a prescriber review the answers. If a seller skips this, it is not a medical service.
  • Ask where the medicine comes from. Our supply is official LillyDirect supply, Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, genuine KwikPens, all six doses stocked from 2.5mg to 15mg.
  • Beware dramatic claims. Promises of dramatic weight-loss claims, or of specific results, are a red flag. Results vary.
  • Look for clear returns and support terms. Ours are stated plainly, with support Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm by email, account chat or phone on 0333 207 0413.

Delivery is part of safety too. Our free next-day tracked delivery uses DPD with temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day, and Saturday delivery is £14.99.

If you suspect a side effect, report it. The Yellow Card scheme lets anyone report suspected side effects or suspect products, and reports help regulators spot problems.19 If you think you have received a suspect product, contact the seller, your pharmacist and the MHRA.

Cost sometimes pushes people toward risk. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the gap between providers for the same dose ranges from £27 to £41, so comparing regulated providers is worthwhile. A much lower price from an unregulated source is not a saving if you cannot be sure what is in the pen.

08 · Cheaper alternatives and supplements

Cheaper alternatives, supplements and the 'poor man's Ozempic'

The phrase 'poor man's Ozempic' is a marketing nickname for berberine, a low-cost supplement sold without clinical oversight. Dosing is not standardised, and supplements are not assessed for you by a prescriber.

If you ask what a cheaper alternative to Mounjaro in the UK is, the answer depends on what you mean by cheaper. A low-cost supplement is available cheaply without assessment, but it is a different category, not a licensed equivalent. Our guide to non-prescription options for weight loss covers that ground honestly.

Within licensed prescription medicines, there are real choices. Wegovy (semaglutide) is another licensed weight-management injection. Its pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks to reach the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 Your first Wegovy pen starts at £99.99 as a first-order price. Liraglutide, supplied as Saxenda and similar products, is a daily injection at 6mg per millilitre, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

On Mounjaro itself, price depends on dose. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest 2.5mg starting pen is £143.96 and the dearest is £179.99, checked 10 October 2026. Boots' Mounjaro dose prices run from £179.00 to £339.00. At EverydayMeds the standard 2.5mg pen is £169.99.

Which is safer, then? No licensed medicine is safer for everyone; a prescriber decides what suits you. Both are prescription medicines with their own product information, and a prescriber weighs them against your history. Comparing price is reasonable. Comparing safety by price, or choosing an unassessed product because it is cheap, is not.

A practical rule: if a product is cheap because nobody checks you, nobody is accountable for it, and its contents are unverified, the low price is the risk. If a product is cheaper because it is a different licensed medicine, that is a legitimate choice to make with a prescriber.

09 · Costs over a year

Planning the cost of treatment over a year

Planning the cost in advance removes one of the pressures that push people toward unregulated sources. Treatment starts on the 2.5mg pen and a prescriber steps the dose up over time. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

A first year is 52 weeks, or 13 pens. At standard prices a first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. Those totals are before discounts. If you settle at another maintenance dose, the monthly figure applies: £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg and £319.99 at 12.5mg per month, each before discounts.

StageWhat it isStandard price
Starter pen2.5mg, 4 weeks£169.99 per month
First year, staying on 5mgOne 2.5mg pen then 5mg, 13 pens over 52 weeks£2,711.88 in total
First year, stepping up to 15mgEvery dose from 2.5mg up to 15mg, 13 pens over 52 weeks£3,599.88 in total

The weekly equivalents help with budgeting: £42.50 per week at 2.5mg, £54.75 at 5mg, £70.00 at 7.5mg, £72.75 at 10mg, £80.00 at 12.5mg and £82.50 at 15mg. Switching to us at a higher dose? Your first order at 15mg is £289.99 as a first-order price. The new-customer discount applies at any dose, not only 2.5mg.

Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts. Checking live, dated prices matters when comparing providers. Ours were checked 10 October 2026, and our price list is on the Buy Mounjaro page.

Payment is flexible: Visa, Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions. You choose each order, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. A planned, dated cost is the opposite of an open-ended gamble on an unverified seller.

10 · Stopping, aftercare and support

Stopping, aftercare and where to get support

If you stop Mounjaro, the medicine takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear your system because of its half-life of about five days, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 For any decision to stop, change or restart, talk to your prescriber first rather than deciding alone or relying on forum advice.

Aftercare is where regulated treatment differs most from misuse. Our prescribing team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, and side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, so what we know about you stays current. If your medicines change or a new condition appears, that is the moment to tell us, and the review exists for exactly this.

Interactions deserve a specific mention. Some medicines can be affected by treatment, and the patient information leaflet and prescriber are the places to check.13 Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so ask your prescriber about contraception. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, so tell your prescriber.

Side effects are reported through your prescriber and the Yellow Card scheme. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom, and report suspected side effects via the Yellow Card scheme.19

Support is practical and human. You can reach our team Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, by account portal chat or by phone on 0333 207 0413. GLPTrackr, our free companion app for iOS and Android, helps you keep track of your journey in one place.

If your difficulty is less about the medicine and more about how you feel about food, eating or your body, say so to a GP. Medicines support a plan, but they are not a treatment for distress, and a good clinician will want to know. Asking early is a strength.

Finally, remember that more than 100,000 customers have been supported on their weight loss journey with us. That is a statement about the number of people we have served, not about outcomes, and results vary. When you are ready, you can start with the free consultation, and a GPhC-registered prescriber will take it from there.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What prescription drugs can cause weight loss?
Several prescription medicines can affect weight, but only some are licensed for weight management. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity. For any other medicine, effects and risks vary, so ask your prescriber or pharmacist. Using a medicine for weight loss when it was prescribed for something else, without advice, counts as misuse and is not something we recommend.
What can misusing prescription drugs lead to?
Misuse removes the checks a prescriber makes on your BMI, medical history and current medicines, so a problem may go unnoticed until after you have taken the medicine. With injections such as Mounjaro, the effect also lingers, because tirzepatide takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. Buying from unregulated sellers adds the risk of counterfeit products. If you have taken something unprescribed and feel unwell, speak to a GP or pharmacist, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. For severe, persistent stomach pain, chest pain, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away.
Can you get weight-loss drugs on prescription?
Yes. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. The NHS also offers it, but access is being phased in over several years.
Who qualifies for Mounjaro on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout is expected to take years, so ask your GP where your area has reached. The private licence is broader, which is why many eligible people choose regulated private treatment instead of waiting.
What is the new drug better than Mounjaro?
Newer licensed options exist, including Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, but no trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet. Which medicine suits you depends on your health, other medicines and goals, and that is a decision for a prescriber, not a headline. Claims that one product is simply better should be treated with caution.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The nickname is usually applied to berberine, a low-cost supplement sold without clinical oversight. It is not a licensed medicine and not an established equivalent of prescription GLP-1 treatment.
What is a cheaper alternative to Mounjaro in the UK?
Start by comparing regulated providers. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest 2.5mg starting pen is £143.96 and the dearest is £179.99, checked 10 October 2026. Avoid anything cheap because nobody checks you. That is not a saving, it is a risk.
Which is safer, Ozempic or Mounjaro?
Neither is safer for everyone. Both are prescription medicines with their own product information, but Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss. Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, acts on GLP-1 alone. A prescriber weighs these factors for you, which is the safety step that misuse skips. Report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.
