GLP-1 and Multiple Sclerosis: What UK Patients Should Know (October 2026)

GLP-1 medicines are not licensed to treat multiple sclerosis: Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed in the UK for weight management and type 2 diabetes only.1 Whether it suits you with MS is an individual decision for your prescriber and your MS team, based on your history and current medicines. Our consultation is free. A Mounjaro pen is only supplied if a prescriber approves it. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines such as Mounjaro are licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for treating MS.
  • Having MS does not automatically rule you in or out; a prescriber reviews your medical history and current medicines first.
  • Tell your neurologist or MS nurse before starting any weight-loss injection, and tell our prescriber about every MS treatment you take.
  • Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), if a prescriber approves treatment.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Can you take a GLP-1 medicine if you have MS?

Possibly, but it is a decision for a prescriber who knows your full history, not something a web page can settle. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.1 MS is not a listed qualifying condition and not a licensed reason to take it.

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.1 For someone with MS, that means telling us about your disease-modifying treatment, any symptom treatments, and how your MS currently affects you. Our guides on Mounjaro and multiple sclerosis and whether you can take Mounjaro with MS go into the Mounjaro-specific questions.

02 · Honest limits

Research and MS

Mounjaro's licensed uses are weight management and type 2 diabetes, and its trials were in obesity, so they do not show how it affects MS.

Do not start a weight-loss injection hoping it will act as an MS treatment. Keep taking the treatment your neurologist prescribed.

03 · Cost and ordering

What it costs and how ordering works

If a prescriber approves treatment, your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Every later order is £25 off the standard price, applied automatically (code DOSE25). If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices, before those discounts. All six doses are in stock. You can see the full range on our weight loss treatments page.

Ordering works in three steps:

  • Complete the free online consultation. It is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Include your MS diagnosis and medicines.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Our registered pharmacy dispenses and dispatches. Same-day dispatch applies when ordered by 3pm, with free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging.

04 · How GLP-1 works

How GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines work

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That is the licensed mechanism, and it relates to appetite and blood sugar. It says nothing about the nervous system or MS.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. The trial does not tell us how people with MS respond, so do not read it as a prediction for you.

05 · Weight and MS

Weight management when you live with MS

Wanting to manage weight with MS is reasonable, and the practical route starts with your care team. Fatigue, mobility changes and some medicines can make diet and activity harder, so a plan needs to fit your situation. Mounjaro must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1 If you have severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis), get medical help straight away. Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems), or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, also need immediate medical help.

Questions worth raising with your neurologist, MS nurse or GP before applying:

  • Is now a stable point in my MS to make a change to my treatment?
  • Could a weight-loss medicine interact with anything I already take?
  • What activity is realistic for me, and who can support me with it?
  • How will we tell if a new symptom is MS-related or medicine-related?

The last point matters. New symptoms should be discussed with your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our wider guide to weight loss drugs and multiple sclerosis covers the other options.

06 · Safety and medicines

Medicines, interactions and safety

Which medicines matter with MS depends on your diagnosis and treatment, and the person best placed to say is your neurologist or pharmacist. Our prescriber reviews everything you tell us against Mounjaro's product information.13

That review is why accuracy on the consultation form matters. List every prescription, over-the-counter product and supplement. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so a change in your MS treatment can be picked up at the next review.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system.1 If you and your neurologist decide it is not right for you, nothing needs doing while it clears, but speak to your prescriber.

07 · Other GLP-1 options

Other GLP-1 medicines and what people ask next

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection that acts on GIP and GLP-1, which distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1 If you are weighing options, our Wegovy pen page explains the semaglutide route. The same MS caveat applies: neither is licensed to treat MS.

08 · NHS access

NHS access to Mounjaro

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Ask your GP or MS team where you stand locally. Private treatment through us includes ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support from the prescribing team, and our pharmacy is GPhC-registered (9012878).

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Start your free consultation

Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take GLP-1 if I have multiple sclerosis?
Having MS does not automatically rule you out, but GLP-1 medicines are not licensed to treat MS. A prescriber reviews your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding if one is suitable. Tell your neurologist or MS nurse first, and list all your MS treatments on the consultation form.
Can you use Mounjaro if you have MS?
It depends on your individual circumstances. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not MS. Our GPhC-registered prescriber assesses your history and medicines before approving anything. Unsuitable orders are refunded automatically, and the consultation is free with no obligation.
What medications should be avoided with MS?
It depends on your diagnosis and treatment. Ask your neurologist, MS nurse or pharmacist before adding any new medicine, including weight-loss injections. Tell our prescriber about every medicine, supplement and over-the-counter product you take so interactions can be checked.
Do GLP-1 drugs treat or slow MS?
No GLP-1 medicine is licensed to treat or slow MS. Mounjaro's licensed uses are weight management and type 2 diabetes.
What are the warning signs of MS?
If you have new or unexplained neurological symptoms such as numbness, vision changes or balance problems, contact your GP or NHS 111. If you lose your vision suddenly, get medical help straight away. Do not start a weight-loss medicine to address symptoms that have not been assessed.
What mimics MS but isn't MS?
Only a clinician can tell, usually after examination and tests. Several conditions can cause similar symptoms, so self-diagnosis is unreliable. If you are worried about symptoms, see your GP, who can refer you to a neurologist. Our service does not diagnose MS or any neurological condition.
Should I tell my neurologist before starting Mounjaro?
Yes. Your neurologist or MS nurse knows your disease and treatment, and can advise on timing and any concerns. Also tell our prescriber about your MS and every medicine you take. If new symptoms appear after starting, discuss them with your prescriber and consider reporting via the Yellow Card scheme.
How much does Mounjaro cost if I am approved?
Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, against a standard price of £169.99. Every later order is £25 off the standard price. The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid. Prices checked 10 October 2026.
