GLP-1 and Multiple Myeloma: What the Evidence Can and Can't Tell You (October 2026)

There is no proven link showing that GLP-1 medicines prevent or treat multiple myeloma. Some published analyses of people with type 2 diabetes have looked at GLP-1 use and myeloma risk, but these are observational studies, so they show association rather than cause. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for cancer.1

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for preventing or treating any cancer, including multiple myeloma.
  • Studies that have looked at GLP-1 use and myeloma risk are observational: they show association, not cause and effect.
  • If you have myeloma, MGUS or are on myeloma treatment, tell your haematology team and any prescriber before starting a weight-loss injection.
  • A prescriber reviews your medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.
  • Do not start or stop any GLP-1 medicine to influence myeloma risk without specialist advice.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What does research say about GLP-1 and multiple myeloma?

Some real-world analyses, mostly in people with type 2 diabetes, have compared people prescribed GLP-1 medicines with people on other treatments and looked at blood cancers, including myeloma and the precancerous condition MGUS. Those results are interesting, but they are not proof.

Observational studies cannot rule out other explanations. People prescribed different diabetes treatments often differ in age, weight, kidney function, other health conditions and how closely they are monitored.

Weight-management use is for adults who meet the licensed BMI criteria, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

02 · Your decision

What should you do if you have myeloma or MGUS?

Speak to your haematology team or specialist nurse before starting any weight-loss injection. They know your diagnosis, your blood results and your treatment plan, and we do not.

If you are considering private treatment, a free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. They assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.1 Always declare a cancer or pre-cancer diagnosis and any treatment you are taking, including trial drugs.

Not every condition is a barrier, and not every condition is straightforward. Our guides on Mounjaro and multiple sclerosis and weight loss drugs and multiple sclerosis show the same principle: long-term conditions need individual review, not a generic answer.

03 · If it is suitable

Cost and ordering if your specialist agrees

If your care team is happy for you to go ahead, the Mounjaro pen starts at a standard price of £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starter. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Prices checked 10 October 2026.

  • Free online consultation, no charge and no obligation.
  • Prescriber review by a GPhC-registered prescriber; unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
  • Official LillyDirect supply, with genuine KwikPens; all six doses are in stock.
  • Free next-day tracked delivery, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.

04 · What GLP-1 medicines do

What GLP-1 medicines actually do

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection from Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg.1

Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the body's response to insulin.1

In SURMOUNT-1, which enrolled 2,539 adults, people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2

05 · Association versus cause

Why association is not the same as protection

When a study finds that one group of patients had fewer cases of a disease, there are several possible explanations. The medicine may have an effect. Or the groups may simply have been different to begin with.

For myeloma, one thing makes interpretation especially hard: MGUS often causes no symptoms and is found by chance on blood tests. Differences in how often people are tested can change what a study appears to show. A headline saying a medicine "protects" against a blood cancer should therefore be read with caution.

Weight-loss and diabetes medicines should be chosen for those purposes, with cancer care directed by your specialist team.

06 · Myeloma and everyday life

Other questions people with myeloma ask

Your haematology consultant and clinical nurse specialist are the right people for questions on prognosis, treatment options and warning signs. For Blue Badge and benefit questions, ask your care team or hospital social worker to point you to the right application routes, and use the official government service for your area.

If a doctor has asked you to lose weight as part of your wider care, say so during your consultation and bring your current medicines list.

07 · Side effects and reporting

New symptoms and reporting

If you notice a new or worsening symptom while taking any GLP-1 medicine, discuss it with your prescriber and your specialist team rather than assuming the cause. Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing need immediate medical help: get medical help straight away. Myeloma, its treatment and a weight-loss injection can each have effects of their own, and sorting out which is responsible needs a clinician.

You can report a suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 The patient information leaflet lists the known effects of the medicine.13

08 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment. Browse all weight loss treatments, or read what the first month on Mounjaro can look like. If you also have another long-term condition, see our guide on taking Mounjaro with multiple sclerosis for how we approach conditions that need prescriber review.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do GLP-1 medicines reduce the risk of multiple myeloma?
That has not been established. Some observational analyses in people with type 2 diabetes have looked at the question, but they show association, not cause. No GLP-1 medicine, including Mounjaro, is licensed to prevent or treat cancer. Speak to your haematology team about your own risk.
Can I take Mounjaro if I have multiple myeloma or MGUS?
It depends on your individual circumstances. A prescriber reviews your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable. Tell them about your diagnosis and treatment, and check with your haematology team first. If you need to compare your options, see our guide to multiple Mounjaro pens for how pens and doses work.
Can multiple myeloma be cured?
Your haematology consultant is the right person to ask. Your haematology consultant can explain what treatment aims to achieve in your case, how it is monitored and what the outlook may be. Myeloma charities also offer specialist helplines.
What should multiple myeloma patients avoid?
That is a question for your haematology team, because advice depends on your treatment, blood results and kidney function. Before starting any new medicine, including a weight-loss injection, tell your specialist and your prescriber so interactions and suitability can be checked properly.
What cancers are diabetics prone to?
If you have diabetes and a cancer concern, discuss screening and symptoms with your GP or diabetes team. Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes and weight management, not for cancer prevention.
What are the signs that multiple myeloma is progressing?
Your haematology team monitors this through blood tests, scans and symptoms, and can tell you what to watch for in your case. Report any new or worsening symptom to them rather than waiting for a routine appointment. If you have chest pain, difficulty breathing or fainting, get medical help straight away.
Can you get a Blue Badge or benefits with myeloma?
Eligibility depends on how your condition affects your mobility and daily life, and each application is assessed individually. Ask your specialist nurse or hospital social worker to guide you, and apply through the official government service for your area.
What are the latest treatments and news for multiple myeloma?
Treatment options change quickly, so rely on your haematology consultant and myeloma charities for current information rather than a pharmacy page. Ask your team whether any new options or clinical trials are relevant to your situation.
Should I start or stop a GLP-1 medicine because of myeloma risk?
No. Do not start or stop a GLP-1 medicine on the basis of myeloma headlines. Use it only for its licensed purposes, weight management or type 2 diabetes, under prescriber supervision, and discuss any cancer-related questions with your specialist team.
