01 · The core answer
What does Mounjaro treatment involve?
Mounjaro treatment means injecting tirzepatide once a week, on the same day each week, with a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen.1 Tirzepatide is the brand name's active ingredient and is made by Eli Lilly. The pen comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Treatment is not a one-off. It is a programme: a free consultation, a prescriber review, a starter dose, gradual increases, and regular follow-up. The medicine is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.13
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which makes a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow.
02 · Your decision
Is Mounjaro treatment right for you?
It may suit you if you are an adult seeking weight management support and meet the licensed criteria, which your prescriber checks in the consultation. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than wait.
If you want to go ahead privately, the Mounjaro pen and consultation page shows live prices, and the weight loss clinic explains the wider programme. For a fuller cost picture, see what treatment costs.
03 · Treatment timeline
What is the Mounjaro treatment timeline?
The timeline starts with a lower dose that your body can adjust to, followed by stepwise increases. At standard prices, the first four pens (the 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg pens) total £879.96. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.
Many people notice a change in appetite within the first few weeks, because most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That is an early signal, not a weight-loss total. Larger changes build over months, and the trial data run far longer than a few weeks.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
Your prescriber reviews progress at each stage, and you can read more in our guides to the duration of treatment and how long treatment lasts.
04 · Breaks and gaps
What if there is a break or gap in treatment?
If you miss doses or stop for a while, tell your prescriber before you restart. Do not assume you can pick up at your old dose, and never double up to catch up. Your prescriber decides the safest dose to resume on, based on how long the gap was and how you were tolerating treatment.
Tirzepatide has a long half-life, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That slow clearance is why a short pause does not switch treatment off overnight, though appetite may return gradually.
Our prescribing team handles dose-titration and follow-up reviews, and repeat orders re-check suitability, so a break is something to raise at your next review. There is no auto-shipping and no subscription lock-in. Our treatment plan guide shows how reviews fit together.
05 · What it does and does not treat
What conditions does Mounjaro treat?
In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1
Addiction. Mounjaro is not licensed to treat addiction of any kind. Many people find their desire for alcohol drops on treatment, but that is an observation, not a licensed effect.13 If you are worried about your relationship with alcohol or food, speak to your GP.
Migraine and allodynia. Neither is a licensed use. Migraine is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet, but a change in skin sensation is listed as uncommon (up to 1 in 100 people). If you notice new symptoms during treatment, discuss them with your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
Pancreatitis. Mounjaro does not treat pancreatitis, and a history of it needs extra care before starting.13 Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis), is a reason to seek immediate medical help.13
Mood. The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link between GLP-1 medicines and suicidal thoughts. The MHRA keeps this under continuous review. Even so, any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel: tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.17
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
06 · Eating and daily habits
What should I eat and avoid on treatment?
No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, but some choices make treatment easier. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. Smaller, slower meals work better.1
Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue. Protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. Include a protein source at every meal and do resistance exercise regularly. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.
Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Regular moderate activity such as brisk walking, plus resistance work, is the evidence-backed pattern. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts.
On alcohol, there is no direct interaction, but drinking on a reduced appetite and an emptier stomach can hit harder than usual. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar.13 Coffee and tea are fine, though strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people. Constipation is a common complaint, so see our guide to constipation relief on treatment.
07 · Safety and who should avoid it
Who should not take Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.13 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.13 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion), because your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.
In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours; it is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials. Tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2.1
Keep fluids up. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away. Injection-site soreness is another everyday issue; see injection site reactions.
08 · Strengths and alternatives
Which dose and which alternatives?
Your prescriber chooses the dose, and many people settle on a maintenance strength that balances results and tolerability. If you want detail on specific strengths, see our pages on 5mg treatment and 15mg treatment. At standard prices, a pen costs £189.99 at 5mg and £299.99 at 15mg. A first year costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.
How does Mounjaro compare with other medicines? Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, which distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1 That is a difference in mechanism, not proof that one suits everyone better. Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily GLP-1 tablets, and no trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet. If you want to explore the alternative, see the Wegovy pen. Your prescriber decides what suits you.
As for supplements, no supplement is required, and products sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents or substitutes for prescribed treatment.
