Mounjaro Hair Growth: What Really Happens (October 2026)
Mounjaro does not promote hair growth. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1 Protein and balanced nutrition matter while you eat less. Position as of October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not a hair-growth treatment; nothing in its licence suggests it makes hair grow or thicker.
-
Shedding is a recognised side effect, linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.
-
For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, so it is usually a temporary pattern, not permanent loss.
-
Protein, balanced meals and resistance exercise are the practical levers you control.
-
Heavy, patchy or worrying hair loss is worth raising with your prescriber, and you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.

01 · The core answer
Does Mounjaro help or affect hair growth?
No. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and hair growth is not part of either licence.1
What the product information does say is that hair shedding is a recognised side effect. In the trials behind the weight-management licence: Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 So it is a minority experience, but more common than on placebo.
Hair shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.
02 · Your next step
Is this relevant to me, and what should I do?
It is relevant if you are noticing more hair in the shower, on your brush or on your pillow since starting treatment, or if you are worried about it before you begin. Most people on the medicine never notice a change that bothers them, and the shedding that does occur tends to ease as weight stabilises.
The sensible response is practical rather than dramatic. Keep meals balanced, make sure protein is at every meal, keep up resistance exercise, and avoid pushing for maximum speed of loss. You can also read about our wider weight loss clinic approach.
| Question | Honest answer |
|---|---|
| Does Mounjaro grow hair? | No. It is not a hair-growth treatment. |
| Can it cause shedding? | Yes, hair shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in trials. |
| What drives it? | Rapid weight loss itself, not a direct drug effect. |
| Does it settle? | For most people, as weight stabilises. |
| What can I control? | Protein, balanced nutrition, resistance exercise and loss pace. |
03 · Why shedding happens
Why hair shedding happens on Mounjaro
Hair shedding on Mounjaro is tied to the speed of weight loss. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 That is how it supports a reduced-calorie diet, and it is also why nutrition can slip without you noticing.
Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. For most people it settles as weight stabilises. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1
If you want the wider picture across the class, our guide on whether these medicines help hair growth goes through it in more detail.
04 · Will it grow back
Will hair grow back after shedding?
For most people, shedding settles once weight stabilises.
If you stop treatment, the medicine clears over four to five weeks, but nothing needs doing while it clears and there is no way to speed it up.1
If you are specifically asking about timing, our page on whether Mounjaro hair loss is temporary covers what to expect. Women often ask the question separately, and we address that in hair loss in women on Mounjaro.
05 · What helps in practice
What helps while you lose weight
The most useful steps are the ones that protect your nutrition and lean tissue. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.1
- Protein at every meal. This is harder when appetite is low, so plan it rather than leaving it to chance.
- Balanced, smaller meals. No food is banned, but vegetables, fibre and regular fluids make treatment easier.
- Resistance exercise alongside regular moderate activity such as brisk walking.
- Hydration. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, so keep water within reach.
- A sensible pace. A loss pace guided by your prescriber, rather than maximum speed, is the aim.
If your appetite is very low and you struggle to eat enough, tell your clinical team rather than hoping it passes. Dose can be held for longer before stepping up if a new strength is hard to tolerate.1
06 · Vitamins and supplements
Vitamins and hair supplements on Mounjaro
No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight; discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.
Hair-growth supplements are widely marketed, usually as low-cost products with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Treat dramatic claims with caution. If you are considering any supplement, mention it to your prescriber or pharmacist so they can check it alongside your treatment.
If you are worried about deficiencies because you are eating very little, that is a conversation for your clinical team or GP, not a reason to self-treat with a handful of products.
07 · Texture and other changes
Does Mounjaro change hair texture?
Hair texture change is not a listed side effect in the UK patient leaflet.13 If you notice a new symptom, discuss it with your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Other appearance changes are better understood. "Ozempic face" is not a drug effect. It is what losing a significant amount of weight quickly can do to facial volume, on any method including diet or surgery, and the same applies to loose skin.1 Skin commonly adapts gradually after weight stabilises. Muscle, if you want to build or keep it, is covered in our guide to muscle growth on these medicines.
08 · When to speak up
When to talk to a prescriber about hair loss
Speak to your prescriber if shedding is heavy, patchy, getting worse rather than easing, or upsetting you. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.
Also report any side effect through the Yellow Card scheme, which helps regulators monitor safety.19
Stay alert to the uncommon but serious effects too, such as severe persistent stomach pain, and get medical help straight away if they occur.1 For ongoing support, our aftercare includes monthly reviews and side-effect support from the prescribing team.

10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
