Does Mounjaro Cause Hair Loss in Women? (October 2026)

Yes — hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, and it can affect women and men. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 It is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises. Read more on whether the shedding is temporary. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect of Mounjaro, reported more often than on placebo in the weight-management trials.
  • It is linked to rapid weight loss itself, not to the drug directly damaging hair.
  • For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises; balanced meals with enough protein matter.
  • Slower, prescriber-guided weight loss and good nutrition are the sensible levers you can control.
  • Tell your prescriber if shedding is patchy, severe or does not settle once your weight levels off.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can Mounjaro cause hair loss in women?

Yes, it can. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1

Common effects (up to 1 in 10 people) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions.1 Hair shedding therefore sits alongside the other common effects rather than among the serious ones.

QuestionHonest answer
Is it a listed side effect?Yes, hair shedding is listed as common.
Does the drug damage follicles directly? No. It is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.
Is it permanent? For most people it settles as weight stabilises.
Can nutrition influence it?Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, so keep the reduced-calorie diet balanced.

02 · Your next step

Is this a reason to avoid Mounjaro?

For most women, no, but it is a fair thing to weigh up. If you are deciding whether treatment suits you, a free consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber is the place to raise hair concerns, especially if you already notice thinning.

If you want the wider picture first, our weight loss clinic page explains how treatment is structured, and the guide to hair loss on this medicine covers the general question for all adults.

03 · What the trials show

What the trials show about hair loss

Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 So it was reported more often with the medicine, yet most people did not report it at all.

The same trials also show why weight is the likely link. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 Those are trial averages, and individual results vary.

04 · Why it happens

Why hair shedding happens on Mounjaro

The recognised explanation is the speed of weight loss, not the medicine acting on the scalp.1 This matters because it explains why shedding is described as temporary for most people and why it is not a reason to assume lasting harm.

It also means Mounjaro is not unusual in this respect. Any significant, quick weight change can affect how much hair you shed, whether it comes from diet, surgery or medication. Our page on weight loss medication and hair loss looks at that wider context.

Eating much less can also mean eating less protein and fewer nutrients. That is why the guidance is that protein intake and overall nutrition matter, and the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1 Reduced appetite is itself a common effect, so it takes a little planning to keep meals nourishing when you feel full quickly.

05 · How to limit shedding

How to reduce hair loss on Mounjaro

You cannot switch shedding off, but you can reduce the pressure that is linked to it.

  • Keep meals balanced. Make protein a priority at each meal, even when portions are small.
  • Protect lean mass. The counter-measures are adequate protein, resistance exercise, and a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed.1
  • Do not chase speed. If the dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up, so speak to your clinical team.
  • Stay hydrated and keep gentle activity going. This also helps with fatigue and constipation, which often arrive alongside hair concerns.
  • Mention it early. Your prescriber can review your dose, your eating pattern and anything else that might contribute.

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. A diet that is too restrictive works against both your hair and your results.

06 · Shampoos, vitamins and food

Shampoo, vitamins and what to eat

No shampoo can change the underlying cause, so treat any product promising to stop GLP-1 hair loss with scepticism. Gentle, mild hair care and avoiding harsh styling that pulls on the hair are reasonable comfort measures.

If you are worried about a vitamin shortage, a pharmacist can advise. Supplements are low-cost with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. If you are worried about deficiency, ask your GP or pharmacist whether testing makes sense rather than guessing.

For food, the message is simple: protein and overall nutrition matter.1 In practice that means building meals around protein-rich foods, adding vegetables and whole grains, and not skipping meals because appetite is low. Eating slowly and stopping at the first feeling of fullness still applies, so small but nutrient-dense meals suit most people best.

07 · Regrowth and when to worry

Does hair grow back, and when should you seek advice?

For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises.1 Hair then has the chance to recover. Hair grows slowly, so expect improvement to be gradual and to come after the shedding itself has eased. Our guide to how temporary Mounjaro hair loss is goes into this further.

Speak to your prescriber or GP if shedding is patchy, if your scalp is sore or itchy, if it is getting worse rather than settling, or if it continues after your weight has levelled off. Women's hair can thin for many reasons unrelated to any medicine, so it is worth having other causes looked at rather than assuming Mounjaro is responsible.

You can also report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators monitor how medicines behave in everyday use.

08 · Other GLP-1 medicines

Is this true of other GLP-1 medicines?

The explanation given for Mounjaro, rapid weight loss itself, is a general one and not a feature unique to one drug.1

If you are comparing options, see our overview of hair loss and GLP-1 medicines and the related page on whether a GLP-1 can cause hair loss. If you are weighing Mounjaro against semaglutide, the Wegovy pen page sets out that option, and the clinical team can talk through which suits you. Do not switch treatment on your own because of hair shedding.

09 · NHS and private care

Hair loss, the NHS and private treatment

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. The side-effect profile is the same whichever route you use, because it is the same medicine. Our page on Mounjaro hair loss and the NHS covers what that means in practice.

With a private prescription from EverydayMeds, the consultation is free and is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of aftercare, so you have someone to tell if shedding worries you. Our pharmacy is GPhC-registered (9012878).

10 · Safety and disclaimer

Using this information safely

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Remember that serious side effects are separate from hair shedding and need urgent help if they occur. See also whether taking Mounjaro can cause hair loss.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro cause hair loss in women?
It can. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect, linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. For most people it settles as weight stabilises.
How to stop hair loss on Mounjaro as a woman?
You cannot switch shedding off, but you can reduce the pressure behind it. Keep meals balanced with enough protein, include resistance exercise, and let your prescriber guide the pace of weight loss rather than chasing speed. If shedding worries you, tell your clinical team so they can review your dose and eating.
How long does hair grow back after Mounjaro?
For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, and hair can then recover gradually. If shedding is patchy, worsening or continues after your weight levels off, speak to your prescriber or GP to check for other causes.
What shampoo is recommended for GLP-1 hair loss?
No shampoo treats the underlying cause. Gentle hair care and avoiding harsh styling are sensible comfort measures. Putting effort into balanced meals with enough protein is likely to matter more than any topical product.
What vitamin is lacking if my hair is falling out?
There is no single answer. On Mounjaro, protein and overall nutrition matter. If you suspect a deficiency, ask your GP or pharmacist about testing rather than self-prescribing supplements, which carry no clinical oversight and have no standard dosing.
Can vitamin B12 reverse hair loss?
The recognised link is rapid weight loss, so balanced nutrition and a steady pace matter most. If you are concerned about your levels, ask your GP or pharmacist whether a test is appropriate.
What to eat to stop hair fall on Mounjaro?
Aim for small, nutrient-dense meals built around protein, with vegetables and whole grains alongside. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, and the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced. Eat slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, and avoid skipping meals just because appetite is low.
When should I speak to someone about hair loss?
Contact your prescriber or GP if shedding is patchy, your scalp is sore or itchy, it is getting worse, or it continues after your weight has stabilised. Many things can thin women's hair, so it is worth checking. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
