Growth Hormone Injections for Weight Loss: What the Evidence Says (October 2026)

Growth hormone injections are not a licensed weight-loss treatment in the UK. They are prescribed by specialists for diagnosed hormone conditions, and using them to lose weight means taking a hormone without an approved reason. The regulated option is a medicine licensed for weight management, such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), prescribed after a consultation. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Growth hormone is a specialist treatment for diagnosed deficiency, not a licensed way to lose weight.
  • Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
  • Supply of growth hormone without a consultation or prescription is a red flag, not a shortcut.
  • Hair shedding on Mounjaro is a recognised side effect linked to rapid weight loss, and it usually settles.
  • If you think your hormones are off, a GP can arrange proper testing rather than guesswork.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Do human growth hormone injections work for weight loss?

Human growth hormone injections are not an approved weight-loss treatment, and we do not supply them for that purpose. Growth hormone has a place in medicine, but that place is treating people who have been diagnosed with a genuine deficiency or another specific condition under specialist care.

Growth hormone is not a safe or approved route to weight loss for someone with normal hormone levels.

By contrast, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults. It is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Individual results vary.

02 · Your next step

What should you do instead?

If your goal is weight loss, start with a conversation about licensed options. Our weight loss clinic explains who is suitable and how the process works. A short free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who decides whether treatment is appropriate for you.

If you are ready to look at pricing, the Mounjaro pen page shows every dose, with the first 2.5mg pen at £129.99 as a first-order price using code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Prices checked 12 October 2026.

If you suspect a hormone problem, such as persistent exhaustion alongside unexplained changes in your body, see your GP first. Testing and diagnosis come before any hormone treatment, never after.

03 · What growth hormone is for

What growth hormone is actually for

Growth hormone is made naturally by the pituitary gland, and injectable versions replace it when the body does not make enough. In the UK these are specialist-initiated medicines, not lifestyle products. A hospital endocrinology team would normally assess you, run tests and monitor you over time.

That answers a common question: how do you know if you need growth hormones? You do not self-diagnose it. Doctors look at your symptoms, your history and carefully timed blood tests. Tiredness, weight gain or a slow metabolism are common to dozens of everyday causes and do not on their own point to a deficiency.

Growth hormone products are prescription medicines for specialists to choose between, and a brand name is no reason to buy one online without a prescription.

04 · Risks of unregulated supply

Risks of buying injections without a prescription

Sellers who offer to supply injectable hormones without a consultation or prescription are operating outside the safeguards that protect patients. You cannot tell what is in the vial, how it was stored or whether it is genuine.

Counterfeit and falsified injectables are a known problem, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.7 If you have had a reaction to any medicine, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Promotions that promise dramatic weight-loss claims from a hormone or a peptide should make you more cautious, not less. A genuine pharmacy checks suitability, uses a registered prescriber and lets you verify its registration. You can check ours on the GPhC register under number 9012878.12

05 · Tirzepatide and growth hormone

Does tirzepatide suppress growth hormone?

Reduced growth hormone is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.

What the evidence does describe is how tirzepatide works: it activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.1 That is a different pathway from growth hormone altogether, which is one reason the two are not interchangeable.

If you have a diagnosed pituitary or hormone condition, tell your prescriber before starting treatment so they can take it into account. If you notice a new symptom while on treatment, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through Yellow Card.19

06 · Hair and weight loss injections

Hair growth and weight loss injections

Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. For most people it settles as weight stabilises.13

Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.13

Our guide to Mounjaro and hair growth goes into what helps. A growth hormone injection is not a recognised fix for this, and it is not a way to protect your hair while losing weight.

07 · Other injections people ask about

Other injections people ask about

Growth hormone is one of many injections people hear about in connection with weight. We have separate guides that take the same honest approach to each:

The pattern is consistent: an injection that is licensed for something else is not automatically a weight-loss treatment.

08 · Peptides, celebrities and hype

Peptides, celebrities and social media claims

A famous name is not evidence that something works or is safe.

A peptide being sold online is not the same as a peptide being licensed. For weight management, the regulated route is a licensed medicine prescribed to you after your suitability has been assessed. No single injection targets belly fat on its own, and weight loss from any method does not come from one body area.

Who should not take peptide injections of unknown origin? Anyone who cannot be sure what is in them, which in practice means anything bought without a prescription. Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Anyone with a medical condition or taking other medicines should speak to a clinician before using any injectable.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46

09 · Side effects to weigh up

Side effects of the licensed option

Every effective medicine has trade-offs, and Mounjaro is no exception. Most side effects are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.1

Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.13 That is why everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week, and the dose rises gradually to a maximum of 15mg depending on response and tolerance.1

Get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.13 An unlicensed hormone injection bought online comes with no such guidance, no aftercare and no one to call.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do growth hormone injections work for weight loss?
Growth hormone injections are not a licensed weight-loss treatment in the UK. They are prescribed by specialists for diagnosed conditions, not for weight loss. If you want a medicine licensed for weight management, Mounjaro is prescribed after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
How do you know if you need growth hormones?
You cannot tell from symptoms alone. Tiredness and weight gain have many common causes. A doctor, usually a specialist in hormones, decides after reviewing your history and arranging blood tests. If you are worried, start with your GP rather than buying injections online.
Does tirzepatide suppress growth hormone?
Reduced growth hormone is not a listed side effect in the Mounjaro patient leaflet. If you have a known pituitary or hormone condition, tell your prescriber before starting. Report any new symptom through the Yellow Card scheme.
Is there any injection for weight gain?
We do not supply injections for weight gain, and we cannot advise on them. Unintended low weight or difficulty gaining weight needs a medical assessment to find the cause. Speak to your GP, who can arrange tests and refer you to a dietitian or specialist if needed.
Is there a best peptide for weight loss?
No peptide is best for everyone, and sellers who claim one are marketing. The sensible comparison is between licensed medicines whose trial results are published. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for weight management in the UK, and your prescriber decides what suits you.
Who should not take peptide injections?
Anyone who cannot be certain what is in the vial should avoid them, which includes any injectable offered without a consultation or prescription. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. People with medical conditions or who take other medicines should speak to a clinician first. Licensed medicines are checked for suitability before supply.
Will weight loss injections make my hair fall out?
Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect. For most people it settles as weight stabilises. Balanced nutrition and enough protein help. A growth hormone injection is not a recognised remedy.
