What fat loss injections cost per month

The Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose and £299.99 at the top 15mg dose, at standard prices. One pen is a four-week supply, so these are monthly figures. All six doses are in stock.

What a first year of treatment costs

A first year costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices. Those totals assume 52 weeks, or 13 pens. A new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order is £25 less.

Settling at 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg? Your monthly cost is £244.99, £274.99 or £289.99 per pen respectively. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.

03 · What counts as fat loss injections

What counts as a fat loss injection

In the UK, the injections people mean are prescription medicines for weight management, not procedures that claim to dissolve fat. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly. It is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

These medicines do not remove fat from one chosen area. Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹

04 · Why the dose changes the price

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose rises to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.¹¹¹

Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Your prescriber guides the pace, and you are not obliged to climb to the top of the ladder.

05 · Is the cost worth it?

Whether the cost is worth it: what the evidence says

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages, and individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.² Trial averages do not predict your own result, so treat them as context for the spend, not a promise.

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase, and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.¹ That review is part of why monitoring matters: you should not keep paying for a treatment that is not working for you. 06 · NHS or private?

NHS or private: the honest picture

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. If you are in an NHS priority group, ask your GP first. If you are not, or do not want to wait, private treatment from a registered pharmacy is the regulated route. NHS patients pay only the standard prescription charge of £9.90 in England where charges apply.

Private treatment is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹ A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding if it suits you.

07 · Cost-cutting traps

Cost-cutting shortcuts that are not safe

Beware unusually cheap pens. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.⁷ Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.¹² Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.

A genuine pen arrives cold-chain packaged with a batch number and expiry date, and the solution inside is clear and colourless. Do not use a pen that looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles, has been frozen, is past its expiry, or has been out of the fridge for more than 30 days, or above 30°C in use.¹³

08 · Cheaper alternatives?

"Poor man's Ozempic" and other cheaper alternatives

The "poor man's Ozempic" is a marketing nickname for low-cost supplements, such as berberine, sold online. They are available cheaply without assessment, and carry no clinical oversight.

Licensed alternatives do exist. Liraglutide (Saxenda, and products such as Erly) is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre, unlike the once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Wegovy pens come in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg doses, stepping up after at least 4 weeks to reach 2.4mg from week 17.¹⁸ Which option suits you, and at what price, is a prescriber decision, not a shopping-list one.
