In this guide
01 · The core answer
Can Mounjaro affect your eyes?
Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Eye problems such as blurred vision or vision loss are not listed as side effects in the UK Mounjaro patient information leaflet.
For symptoms such as sun sensitivity or a one-off watery eye, the approach is the same. A new symptom still deserves a conversation with your prescriber, and you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
If you want a broader look, our guides on whether Mounjaro can affect your eyes and whether it can damage your eyes go through the question from other angles.
02 · Your next step
What should you do if your eyes feel different?
Start by sorting your symptom into urgent or non-urgent.
| What you notice | How urgent | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Sudden loss of vision, or a dark patch or shadow in your sight | Emergency | Get medical help straight away and tell them you take Mounjaro |
| Eye pain, a red painful eye, or flashes and new floaters | Urgent | Get medical help straight away from an urgent eye service or NHS urgent care |
| Yellowing of the whites of the eyes | Urgent | Get medical help straight away; do not wait for it to pass |
| Blurred vision that comes and goes | Needs checking | Book an eye test and tell your prescriber |
| Dry, gritty, watery or itchy eyes | Usually non-urgent | Check fluids, try simple lubricating drops from a pharmacist, mention it at your review |
| Puffy or sunken-looking eyes | Usually non-urgent | Look at hydration, sleep, and the pace of weight change; raise it if it worries you |
If you are already a customer, our prescribing team offers ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support, so use them. If you're still deciding whether treatment suits you, the Mounjaro pen page explains the free consultation, which is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
03 · Blurred vision
Can Mounjaro cause blurry vision?
Blurred vision is one of the most common eye-related worries, and it deserves a proper check rather than a guess. Blurred vision is not listed as a side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet; tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.13
Blurred vision has many ordinary causes: tiredness, screen strain, needing a new prescription, dry eyes, migraine and, for people with diabetes, changes in blood sugar. Because Mounjaro is also licensed for type 2 diabetes, anyone with diabetes should keep their regular diabetic eye screening appointments and tell the screening team about their treatment.
Short, brief episodes that settle are still worth reporting. Sudden blurring in both eyes that is unexplained, or any blurring with other symptoms such as weakness, confusion or a severe headache, needs medical help straight away. Our related guide on whether Mounjaro can make your eyes blurry goes into the practical steps.
04 · Dry and watery eyes
Dry, watery, red or itchy eyes on Mounjaro
Dry, watery, red or itchy eyes are usually minor and have many everyday causes. Dryness and watering are often two sides of the same problem, because an irritated surface can make eyes water. Allergies, central heating, long screen sessions, contact lenses and poor sleep are far more common culprits than any injection.
One link worth knowing about is hydration. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly. Keep water within reach through the day. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. Being well hydrated will not fix every eye symptom, but it removes one avoidable variable.
If your eyes are red, itchy or irritated, our pages on Mounjaro and dry eyes, red eyes, bloodshot eyes and itchy eyes cover each in more detail. A pharmacist can suggest simple lubricating drops, and an optician can check for infection or allergy. Get medical help straight away if there is pain, light sensitivity or a change in your sight.
05 · Puffy and sunken eyes
Puffy eyes, sunken eyes and dark circles
Puffy or sunken eyes are about how your face looks, not usually how your eyes work. Losing weight changes your appearance, and your face is often where people notice it first.
The two practical levers are adequate protein, with a protein source at every meal, and resistance exercise. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls. Alongside that, eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net; discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.
Puffiness has different everyday causes: poor sleep, salty food, alcohol, allergies and fluid shifts. Alcohol has no direct interaction with Mounjaro, but drinking on a reduced appetite can hit harder than usual and can leave you looking puffy the next morning. Dark circles are covered in our guide to dark circles under eyes on Mounjaro.
If a change looks sudden, one-sided or comes with swelling elsewhere, have it checked rather than assuming it is cosmetic.
06 · Yellow eyes
Yellow eyes: why you should not wait
Yellowing of the whites of the eyes needs medical help straight away, whatever medicine you take.
Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, or pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, needs medical help straight away.
Your prescribing team will want to hear about it, and you can also report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
07 · GLP-1 eye news
Existing eye conditions and eye screening
If you have diabetes, regular eye screening matters regardless of treatment. If you have had previous eye disease, tell your prescriber at consultation and tell your optician you are starting treatment. Both can then plan appropriate follow-up. You can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
08 · Tell your prescriber
What to tell your prescriber before and during treatment
The most useful thing you can do is give a complete picture at consultation and at every review. Mention any existing eye condition, any diabetic eye screening result, a history of sudden vision changes, and all other medicines, including insulin or a sulfonylurea. Doses of those may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, and that is a conversation for your prescriber, not a reason to avoid treatment.
Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
If you do stop, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
09 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
10 · Getting care
NHS or private: where to get your eyes checked and your treatment reviewed
For any eye symptom, an optician or urgent eye service is usually the quickest route, and your GP or prescriber can coordinate the rest. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.
If you choose to start privately, our weight loss clinic explains how treatment works. Our service is a GPhC-registered pharmacy (registration 9012878). The consultation is free, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Aftercare includes monthly reviews and side-effect support, so there is a route to raise a new symptom, such as an eye problem, with a clinician who knows your history.
