A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Sudden, severe or one-sided vision loss, eye pain or flashing lights need medical help straight away, not a wait-and-see approach.
  • People with diabetes should keep their eye screening appointments and tell their prescriber about any existing eye condition.
  • Report any suspected side effect, including eye symptoms, through the Yellow Card scheme as well as telling your prescriber.
  • Many everyday things cause blurry or tired eyes, so a clinician or optician is the right person to work out the cause.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can Mounjaro affect your eyes?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Eye and vision changes are not among the side effects in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet, but that does not mean they are unimportant. Your eyes matter. A vision change that begins while you are on any treatment should be assessed by someone who can examine you.

02 · What you should do

What to do if your vision changes

If your vision changes suddenly, severely, or in one eye only, get medical help straight away through an urgent eye service, the NHS urgent advice service or accident and emergency. Do not wait for your next injection day or your next scheduled review.

For milder changes, such as gently blurred or tired eyes, take these steps:

  • Note when it began, whether it affects one or both eyes, and whether it comes and goes.
  • Tell your prescriber at your next review, or sooner if it is getting worse.
  • Book an eye test with an optician, who can check whether you need a new prescription or have another cause.
  • Report the symptom through the Yellow Card scheme if you suspect it is linked to your medicine.19

Please do not stop or change your treatment on your own because of something you read online. Talk to the prescriber first, who can look at your whole picture.

03 · Is this relevant to you?

Who should be especially careful

If you have diabetes, an existing eye condition, or you have noticed any recent change in your sight, tell your prescriber before you start and while you are being treated. That is why our consultation asks about your health history, and why every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than a scoring script.

If you are weighing up treatment and want to understand the wider picture, our weight loss clinic page explains how treatment works from consultation to aftercare, and the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation page shows current doses and availability, with all doses in stock.

04 · What we can and cannot say

Mounjaro, how it works and your eyes

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2

The Patient Information Leaflet that comes with every pen lists the side effects of Mounjaro.13 Read the side-effects section yourself, and bring any question to your prescriber. If a symptom is not on the leaflet list, it is not a listed side effect, but tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.

05 · Why eyes change anyway

Everyday reasons for blurry or tired eyes

Blurry or uncomfortable eyes have many ordinary causes that have nothing to do with any medicine, and starting a new treatment often coincides with them by chance. An optician or your GP is best placed to sort out which applies to you.

Common non-medicine explanations include:

  • Screen strain. Long periods looking at phones and computers can leave eyes dry, tired and temporarily blurred.
  • An out-of-date glasses prescription. Sight changes gradually, and many people only notice when it becomes obvious.
  • Dry eye. Air conditioning, heating, wind and poor sleep can all leave eyes gritty or sore.
  • Allergies. Seasonal and household allergies can cause itching, redness and watering.
  • Tiredness and stress. Poor sleep makes it harder to focus and can make eyes feel heavy.
  • Underlying conditions. Diabetes and other long-term health problems can affect the eyes, which is why regular screening matters.

Because so many causes overlap, timing alone does not prove anything. A symptom that begins after you start a medicine is worth reporting, and equally worth investigating on its own terms.

If your main concern is redness or irritation rather than vision, our guides to Mounjaro red eyes, bloodshot eyes and itchy eyes go through those symptoms in more detail.

06 · Urgent warning signs

Eye symptoms that need urgent attention

Some eye symptoms are emergencies whatever their cause: get medical help straight away rather than waiting to see whether they settle.

  • Sudden loss of vision in either eye, even if it partly returns.
  • A curtain or shadow spreading across your field of sight.
  • New flashes of light or a sudden shower of floaters.
  • Severe eye pain, especially with headache, nausea or seeing halos around lights.
  • Double vision that appears suddenly.
  • An eye injury, or a red eye with reduced vision.

Get medical help straight away: go to an urgent eye service or accident and emergency, or phone the NHS urgent advice service. Tell them you are taking Mounjaro, so the clinician has the full picture. Afterwards, tell your prescriber and consider reporting the event through the Yellow Card scheme.19

You do not need to work out the cause before seeking help. Getting assessed quickly protects your sight whatever turns out to be responsible.

07 · If you have diabetes

Mounjaro, diabetes and eye screening

If you have diabetes, your regular eye screening is the most important protection for your sight, and treatment with Mounjaro does not replace it. Keep every appointment, and tell the screening team and your prescriber which medicines you take.

Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes as well as for weight management.1 People with diabetes already have a higher baseline need for eye checks, regardless of treatment. If you have diabetic retinopathy, say so at your consultation: your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment.13

If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, your doses may need adjusting, so keep your diabetes team informed. Never change those doses yourself.

If your sight changes noticeably after a change in your diabetes treatment, do not assume it is harmless. Book an assessment, because only an examination can tell the difference between a temporary effect and a problem that needs treatment.

08 · Dehydration and comfort

Looking after your eyes day to day

Simple habits support eye comfort whether or not you take a medicine, and they are worth keeping up during weight management treatment. None of these is a treatment for a medical problem, but they help with everyday tiredness.

Because Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties and helps you feel fuller sooner, some people eat and drink less than usual.1 Paying attention to regular fluids is sensible for general wellbeing. When people ask what to drink for clear eyes or better eyesight, the honest answer is that no drink improves or restores vision. Water simply supports general health, and eye problems need an eye examination.

  • Take regular breaks from screens and look into the distance now and then.
  • Blink fully and often when concentrating.
  • Keep up a varied diet with fruit and vegetables.
  • Do not smoke, which harms eye health.
  • Wear sunglasses in bright light.
  • Have regular eye tests, and sooner if anything changes.

If symptoms persist despite these steps, that is a reason to be examined, not to try more home remedies.

09 · Reporting and aftercare

Reporting a symptom and getting support

If you think a symptom is linked to Mounjaro, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme, which is run by the MHRA.19 Reports from patients help regulators spot patterns across the whole country, which no single clinic could see alone.

With EverydayMeds, ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team are part of the service, along with side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check your suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so there is always a point at which you can raise something new. Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or on 0333 207 0413.

Our pens are supplied through official LillyDirect supply, directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and are genuine KwikPens, so you know the medicine in your hand is the one the leaflet describes. Delivery is free, next-day and tracked, in temperature-controlled packaging.

If you want to read more about how Mounjaro relates to other body systems, our guides on Mounjaro and circulation and whether Mounjaro can affect sleep are useful companions. For detail on specific eye questions, see whether it can make your eyes blurry and whether it can damage your eyes.

10 · Is treatment right for you?

Deciding whether to start treatment

Whether to start Mounjaro is a decision for you and a prescriber, based on your health, your goals and any conditions you have, including eye conditions. A free online consultation lets you explore that with no obligation.

The process is simple. You complete a short health questionnaire at no charge. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. If approved, your pen is dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.1 It is also available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.4

Tell the prescriber about every medical condition, including eye problems, and about your current medicines. That honest picture is what makes the review worthwhile, and it protects you.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can Mounjaro affect your eyes?
Eye and vision changes are not listed as side effects in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet; tell your prescriber about any new change in your vision. Sudden or severe changes need urgent medical help, whatever the cause.
What are the eye side effects of Mounjaro?
Eye and vision changes are not on the side-effect list in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. A symptom that is not on that list is not a listed side effect, so tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. If you notice any eye symptom while on treatment, tell your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.
Can Mounjaro cause blindness?
Sudden loss of vision from any cause is an emergency, so get medical help straight away and tell the clinician you take Mounjaro. Afterwards, inform your prescriber and consider a Yellow Card report so the event can be reviewed.
How long does blurry vision last on Mounjaro?
Blurred sight has many causes, so have it checked by an optician or GP rather than waiting. If it is sudden, severe or one-sided, get medical help straight away.
What should I do if my vision changes on Mounjaro?
Note when it began and whether one or both eyes are affected, then tell your prescriber and book an eye test. If the change is sudden, severe, painful or one-sided, go to an urgent eye service or accident and emergency straight away. Do not stop treatment on your own without speaking to a clinician.
Should I tell my prescriber about eye conditions before starting Mounjaro?
Yes. Mention any eye condition, especially if you have diabetes or have had retinal problems, during your consultation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your health history before approving treatment. Keep your regular eye screening appointments too, since those checks protect your sight whether or not you take any medicine.
What medications affect your eyesight?
Many medicines list vision-related effects in their leaflets, which is why checking the leaflet for every medicine you take is worthwhile. If you take several treatments and notice a change in your sight, ask your pharmacist or prescriber to review them together.
What to drink to improve eyesight?
No drink improves or restores eyesight. Staying sensibly hydrated supports general wellbeing, and a varied diet helps overall health, but vision problems need an eye examination rather than a home remedy. See an optician if your sight has changed, and get medical help straight away if the change is sudden.
