Jardiance and Mounjaro Together: What UK Patients Should Know (October 2026)

Jardiance (empagliflozin) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are different medicines, and whether you can take them together is a decision for your prescriber or diabetes team, based on your health, your other tablets and your blood-sugar history. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes and weight management.1 Never add or stop either medicine yourself.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Jardiance and Mounjaro are separate medicines; combining them should only ever happen under a prescriber's direction.
  • Tell every prescriber and pharmacist about all your medicines, including Jardiance, before starting Mounjaro.
  • If you also use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk.
  • Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; Jardiance is a different type of medicine and is not a GLP-1 or GIP treatment.
  • Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Jardiance and Mounjaro together?

Only if a prescriber who knows your full medical picture says so. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes and for weight management in adults, and it is a once-weekly injection.1 Jardiance is a separate prescription medicine with its own leaflet, its own warnings and its own reasons for being prescribed.

02 · Your next step

Which situation are you in?

Your next step depends on who prescribed what, and why.

Your situationWhat to do
You already take Jardiance and are considering MounjaroDisclose Jardiance in your consultation. Do not stop it yourself. Your prescriber may also want to speak to whoever manages your diabetes.
You take Mounjaro and your doctor is proposing JardianceAsk what the aim is, what to monitor, and whether any of your other medicines need changing.
You take Jardiance and are noticing weight changeDo not assume the cause. Raise it with the prescriber who manages the medicine.
You are choosing between themThey are not interchangeable. See our comparison of Jardiance versus Mounjaro.

If you are exploring Mounjaro for weight management and have no diabetes, Jardiance is probably not part of your picture at all. If you are exploring it and do take Jardiance, the consultation is where that gets weighed up. You can read about the Mounjaro pen and how the consultation works.

03 · What each medicine is

What Jardiance and Mounjaro each are

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in strengths of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Jardiance is the brand name for empagliflozin. It is a different medicine from Mounjaro, prescribed on its own terms, and the product leaflet is the place to read what it is for, who should avoid it and what to look out for.13 We do not supply Jardiance.

A common mix-up is to assume Jardiance is a "GLP-1" drug because it is often mentioned alongside them. It is not a GLP-1 or GIP treatment, and we explain that further in our guide to whether Jardiance is a GLP-1 medication.

04 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide. It is also why a prescriber treats it as its own treatment rather than as a drop-in swap for a tablet that works in a different way.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That matters if you are ever asked to stop one medicine to start another: the injection does not disappear the day you decide to stop.

05 · What to tell your prescriber

What to tell your prescriber before combining medicines

Give the prescriber a complete and honest list, because the safe answer depends on it. Mounjaro is only supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 That review is only as good as the information you give it.

  • Every diabetes medicine you take, including Jardiance, tablets, other injections and insulin.
  • Insulin or sulfonylureas. If you use these, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.13 This does not mean they must never be combined with Mounjaro, but it is a reason to involve the person who manages them.
  • The oral contraceptive pill. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows stomach emptying, so ask what extra protection you need.7
  • Over-the-counter products and supplements, even ones you think are harmless.
  • Any recent illness or change in how you feel, particularly anything that has affected your eating or drinking.

Pain relief is a good example of something people forget to mention; see our page on ibuprofen and Mounjaro. Supplements are another, and we cover one common example in our page on magnesium and Mounjaro.

06 · Weight loss and Jardiance

Weight loss: Mounjaro versus Jardiance

Unexplained or faster-than-expected weight loss on Jardiance deserves a conversation with the prescriber who manages it. Do not wait for it to stabilise on its own.

For context, here is what Mounjaro has been shown to do in a trial setting. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

If weight is your main goal, read our explainers on whether Jardiance is a weight loss drug and whether Jardiance is an appetite suppressant.

07 · Low blood sugar and safety

Side effects, low blood sugar and who to call

Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive: the most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks; for Jardiance, read its own patient information leaflet.

Low blood sugar is the one practical safety theme worth understanding. If you take insulin or sulfonylureas alongside Mounjaro, doses may need adjusting because of the low blood sugar risk.13 Ask your diabetes team in advance what low blood sugar feels like for you, what to do about it and who to call, rather than finding out the hard way.

If you notice something new after starting or changing any medicine, speak to your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

08 · Getting it through us

If you decide to start Mounjaro with us

The steps are straightforward.

  • Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation. This is where you list Jardiance and every other medicine.
  • Prescriber review. Your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script.
  • Dispensing and dispatch. Same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly, and the six strengths are in stock. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support are included, and repeat orders re-check your suitability with no auto-shipping. Our wider weight loss clinic explains how treatment fits into a broader plan.

The first order is prescribed for the starting strength of 2.5mg in a typical plan, and your prescriber sets the course.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

10 · Storage and NHS access

Storage, titration and NHS access

Practical points are easy to overlook when you are focused on medicine interactions. Store unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use; they keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a KwikPen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.1 Follow the pen's instructions for the injection itself.

Treatment starts at 2.5mg once a week, then steps up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond. The step-up is monitored by the prescribing team, which is another reason to keep them informed about any other medicine that changes.

On NHS access: Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions). Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.46 If you have type 2 diabetes, your GP or diabetes team remains the first port of call for how your treatment is arranged.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take Jardiance and Mounjaro together?
Only if a prescriber who knows your medical history agrees. They are different medicines with separate leaflets and separate cautions. Tell your prescriber about Jardiance, do not stop or start either yourself, and ask what to monitor, particularly if you also use insulin or sulfonylureas.
Which is better, Jardiance or Mounjaro?
Neither is better in general, because they are different medicines prescribed for different reasons. The right choice depends on your diagnosis, your goals and your other conditions. Our Jardiance versus Mounjaro comparison sets out the differences, but your prescriber makes the call.
What drugs should not be taken with Mounjaro?
There is no single short list, so tell your prescriber about everything you take. Two points are clear: Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows stomach emptying, and insulin or sulfonylureas may need dose adjustments because of low blood sugar risk. They are not automatically forbidden. Check the patient information leaflet and ask your pharmacist.
Why am I losing so much weight with Jardiance?
Weight can change for many reasons, including diet, other medicines and underlying conditions. If weight loss is faster than expected or unintended, speak to the prescriber who manages your Jardiance rather than carrying on and hoping it settles.
What not to mix with Jardiance?
Check the patient information leaflet and ask your pharmacist, as the leaflet is the authoritative list for Jardiance. Always declare every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement before starting anything new. If Mounjaro is being considered, tell the prescriber you take Jardiance so they can review the whole picture rather than each medicine in isolation.
What is the downside of taking Jardiance?
Every medicine has possible side effects, and the full list for Jardiance is in its patient information leaflet, which is the right place to read it. If you are worried about a symptom, speak to your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
How long should you stay on Jardiance?
That is for the prescriber who started it to decide, based on why you take it and how you respond. Do not stop it on your own because you have started or are considering Mounjaro. If you want to change your treatment, raise it at your next review and agree a plan together.
