  • Always tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, including diabetes tablets, insulin and supplements.
  • Report any new or worrying symptoms to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Jardiance with Mounjaro?

It can be done, but it is a clinical decision. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes1. Jardiance is a different medicine, taken as a daily tablet. The two are not the same type of treatment, so one does not replace the other.

Whichever medicine you start second, the person who prescribes it needs to know about the first.

02 · Your next step

What should you do next?

If Jardiance is already part of your treatment, do not stop it to start Mounjaro. Tell the prescriber during the consultation. If you manage a long-term condition, your GP or diabetes team should also know about any new treatment.

If you are thinking about Mounjaro for weight loss, our weight loss clinic explains how treatment works. The Mounjaro pen is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber after a free consultation, and they will ask about your other medicines.

03 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

This is a gut-hormone mechanism. It is a different route from the one a daily diabetes tablet takes.

It also helps explain a practical point. Because Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties, it is relevant to anything else you swallow, which is why a full medicines list matters at every review.

04 · Is Jardiance a GLP-1?

Is Jardiance a GLP-1 medicine?

No. Mounjaro acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors1, and Jardiance is a separate type of diabetes tablet. We explain the difference in is Jardiance a GLP-1 medication.

That matters for the question you are asking. Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines. Still, different does not mean automatically compatible for every person, so the check with a prescriber stays essential.

Readers also ask about appetite and weight. Our pages on whether Jardiance is a weight loss drug and whether Jardiance is an appetite suppressant cover those angles.

05 · Questions for your prescriber

What to ask your prescriber

Bring a short list to your consultation or review. Good questions include:

  • Which of my current medicines could affect, or be affected by, Mounjaro?
  • Do any of my diabetes medicines need their doses reviewed when I start?
  • What symptoms should make me get medical help straight away?
  • How often will my treatment be reviewed?

On the second question, one point is clear from the product information: if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. That does not mean they cannot be combined with Mounjaro.

Read the patient information leaflet that comes with each medicine,13 and report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

06 · Other medicine checks

Other medicines worth mentioning

Jardiance is not the only medicine to declare. Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows, so anyone using them should discuss that with the prescriber.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

Readers with other conditions often ask about migraine or sleep treatments. We have separate pages on sumatriptan with Mounjaro and zopiclone with Mounjaro.

The principle is the same each time: list everything, including over-the-counter products and supplements, and let a prescriber check the full picture rather than relying on a general web answer.

07 · NHS and private routes

NHS and private routes

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If your diabetes is managed by the NHS, keep your GP or diabetes team informed whichever route you choose.

08 · Safety and disclaimer

Important to know

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away. For severe, persistent stomach pain, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take Jardiance and Mounjaro together?
Possibly, but only with prescriber agreement. Mounjaro is a weekly injection licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, and Jardiance is a separate daily tablet. Tell the prescriber about both before starting, never stop either yourself, and keep your GP or diabetes team informed so one person can see your whole treatment plan.
What medications should you not take with Mounjaro?
No single list fits everyone. Insulin and sulfonylureas may need dose adjustments because of low blood sugar risk, and Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives. Declare every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement to your prescriber, who can check your full list before and during treatment.
Which is better, Mounjaro or Jardiance?
They do different jobs, so neither is simply better. Mounjaro is a weekly injection licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Jardiance is a daily tablet. The right choice depends on your condition, goals and medical history, and a prescriber can advise.
Why am I losing so much weight with Jardiance?
If you are losing weight unexpectedly on any medicine, tell your prescriber or GP, because it needs checking rather than assuming it is harmless.
What drugs should not be taken with Jardiance?
The patient information leaflet and your prescriber are the right sources for Jardiance interactions. Always tell every prescriber and pharmacist that you take it, including before starting Mounjaro, so combinations are checked against your full medicines list.
How long should you stay on Jardiance?
That is your prescriber's decision and depends on why it was prescribed. Do not stop it because you are starting Mounjaro. Raise the question at your regular review, and discuss any plan to change your diabetes treatment with the clinician who manages it.
Does Mounjaro stay in the body after stopping?
Yes. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Tell any new prescriber that you recently used it.
Who can supply Mounjaro if I take other medicines?
A GPhC-registered pharmacy such as EverydayMeds can supply Mounjaro if a GPhC-registered prescriber decides it is suitable after a free consultation, so tell them about all your other medicines and any change to them.
