How to Invest in Weight Loss Drugs: An Honest UK Guide (October 2026)
You can invest in weight loss drugs by buying shares in the companies that make GLP-1 medicines, holding a fund or ETF that covers pharmaceuticals or healthcare, or backing the wider supply chain. Mounjaro is made by Eli Lilly. This is general education, not financial advice, and every route carries risk, including losing money. We are a pharmacy, not an investment adviser. A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Investors usually reach this market through manufacturer shares, healthcare or pharma funds, or suppliers to the industry.
-
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is made by Eli Lilly; Wegovy (semaglutide) is made by Novo Nordisk. A listed company is more than a single drug.
-
We are a GPhC-registered pharmacy, not a financial adviser. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
-
Share prices can fall as well as rise, and a good medicine does not make a good investment on its own.
-
If you want treatment rather than a portfolio, a free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
In this guide
There are three broad routes: individual company shares, pooled funds, and indirect exposure through suppliers and service businesses. Each trades off concentration against diversification. The more tightly you focus on a single company, the more your outcome depends on that company alone.
Individual shares. The most direct route is to buy shares in a listed manufacturer through a regulated UK investment platform or share-dealing account. Eli Lilly makes Mounjaro, and Novo Nordisk makes Wegovy and the older liraglutide products. Both are large, established pharmaceutical groups with many products. A share price reflects the whole business: its pipeline, its patents, its manufacturing capacity, its legal risks and the wider economy. It does not simply track how well one injection sells.
Funds and ETFs. A fund spreads your money across many companies. Some funds focus on healthcare, biotechnology or pharmaceuticals. Because weight loss drugs are a growing part of those sectors, a broad healthcare fund gives you some exposure without depending on a single manufacturer. Always read a fund's factsheet to see what it actually holds. A fund's name or marketing theme does not promise that it holds the companies you have in mind. We cannot name a specific fund as suitable, because suitability depends on your circumstances.
Indirect exposure. Injectable medicines need pens, needles, cold-chain packaging, contract manufacturing, diagnostics and digital health support. Companies in those areas may benefit when demand rises, though the link is looser and their share prices respond to many other things.
01 · Your decision
Is investing in this market right for you?
That is a personal financial question we cannot answer. Markets often price in good news before ordinary people hear it. If you are unsure, an independent financial adviser regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority can look at your circumstances. Do not invest money you cannot afford to lose, and be wary of anyone promising specific returns.
Investing in a manufacturer and using its medicines are unrelated decisions. Owning shares has no bearing on whether a medicine is appropriate for your health, and the reverse is also true.
If treatment is what you are really considering, the medicines are licensed, prescription-only and reviewed individually. Our weight loss clinic explains how that works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live prices.
02 · At a glance
The routes compared
| Route | What you hold | Main advantage | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single company shares | A stake in one manufacturer | Direct link to a company you have researched | Concentration: one setback can hit hard |
| Healthcare or pharma fund | A basket of many companies | Spreads risk across the sector | The theme you want may be a small part of the fund |
| Suppliers and services | Businesses that support the industry | Less dependent on one drug | Looser link to demand for these medicines |
| Staying out | Nothing | No market risk | No exposure to any upside |
None of these is a recommendation. Fees, tax treatment, currency effects and your own time horizon all matter, and they differ for every person.
03 · How GLP-1 drugs work
How do GLP-1 drugs work for weight loss?
GLP-1 medicines mimic a natural gut hormone that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. Understanding that mechanism helps you judge claims made about the industry, because the science is the reason demand exists and also the reason competition is intense.
Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). For an investor, that distinction matters in a limited way: it shows why several companies are developing next-generation treatments, and why one product's lead can be challenged by another. For a patient, it means the medicines are not interchangeable, and a prescriber decides which suits you.
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
These are medicines used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. They are not a shortcut, and they are not available without a prescription. That regulatory reality shapes the commercial picture: every sale in the UK passes through a clinical decision, which is a different dynamic from a consumer product that anyone can buy off the shelf.
Treatment is also intended to be long-term for many people. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, and trials measured results at 72 weeks.1 Analysts often discuss how long patients stay on treatment, because that affects revenue. Treat any confident forecast with caution. How long someone stays on treatment is a clinical decision made with their prescriber, not a financial variable.
If you want to understand the wider category before deciding anything, our guide to the future of weight loss drugs looks at where the field may go, without making predictions about share prices.
04 · Who makes these drugs
Which companies are involved in weight loss drugs?
The best-known companies are Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro, and Novo Nordisk, which makes Wegovy and liraglutide-based products. Both are large pharmaceutical groups, and neither is a pure weight loss business.
Eli Lilly supplies Mounjaro, which is tirzepatide.1 Its range extends well beyond metabolic medicines. Novo Nordisk has long specialised in diabetes and obesity care, and Wegovy is semaglutide. Liraglutide, used in Saxenda and similar products, is a daily injection supplied at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre, unlike the once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy pens.
Other large drug makers and many smaller biotechnology firms are developing their own treatments. That is also a useful caution for investors: a promising early-stage compound can fail for reasons nobody anticipated.
Why a company is not a drug. When you buy shares, you buy a claim on a whole business. Its fortunes depend on patent protection, manufacturing capacity, pricing agreements, regulators, litigation, currency, interest rates and the performance of every other product it sells. A company may do well even if one medicine disappoints, or do poorly even when a headline product is popular.
UK pricing and list prices. Manufacturers set list prices that pharmacies buy at, and these can change. Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens ranged from £143.96 to £339.00 per month as of 10 October 2026. The gap between providers for the same dose ranged from £27 to £41. For anyone thinking about the industry's economics, those figures show how prices can differ even for a single branded medicine.

05 · Routes to invest
How can you buy shares or funds in practice?
In practice, most UK individuals use a regulated investment platform, a share-dealing account or a stocks and shares ISA.
Share-dealing accounts. A dealing account lets you buy and sell shares in listed companies, including overseas ones. Buying overseas shares may involve currency conversion, and platforms can charge for it. Dividends from overseas companies may also be taxed differently. Check the platform's charges and the tax rules that apply to you, or ask a qualified adviser.
Stocks and shares ISAs. An ISA is a tax wrapper, not an investment in itself. You choose what to hold inside it, whether individual shares or funds. The wrapper can shelter gains and income from certain taxes within the allowance, but it does not reduce the investment risk of what you pick.
Funds and ETFs. An exchange-traded fund trades like a share but holds a basket of assets. Healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology funds exist. Before buying, check the fund's top holdings, the proportion held in companies making weight loss medicines, its ongoing charges, and whether it is actively managed or tracks an index. A fund's name is not a reliable guide to its contents.
Pensions. Many workplace and personal pensions already hold healthcare and pharmaceutical companies through broad funds. You may have exposure to this sector without having chosen it. Looking at what your existing funds hold can be a sensible first step before adding anything.
What to ask before you invest. Ask what happens if the company loses a patent dispute, what happens if a competitor launches a more convenient product, and how much of the business depends on a single medicine. Ask what you would do if the price fell sharply. If you cannot answer, the position may be too large for you.
Avoid scams. Be cautious of anyone cold-calling, messaging on social media or running a website that promises specific returns from weight loss drug investments. Check that any firm offering investment services is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. We cannot verify or endorse any investment provider.
06 · Risks to understand
What are the risks of investing in this sector?
The main risks are valuation, competition, regulation, pricing pressure, safety findings and the plain fact that markets can be wrong in either direction. Growth stories attract attention, and attention can push prices up before results arrive.
Valuation risk. When a company is widely seen as a winner, its share price may already reflect optimistic expectations. If results are merely good rather than exceptional, the price can still fall. A strong medicine does not promise a strong investment.
Competition. Many firms are developing new treatments, including tablets and next-generation injections. A rival product with easier dosing or better tolerability could take share from an established one.
Pricing and reimbursement. Governments, health services and insurers can negotiate or push back on prices. The UK list-price change for Mounjaro shows that prices can move.10 Pricing decisions affect both patients and company revenue.
Safety and regulation. Medicines are monitored throughout their lives. In the UK, anyone can report a suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme, which helps regulators detect problems.7 New safety information, label changes or regulatory action can affect a company. We cannot predict any of this.
Counterfeit and unregulated supply. Unregulated sellers offering these medicines without a consultation or prescription are a patient-safety problem, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts.7 Genuine supply chains and enforcement are part of the sector's risk picture.
Concentration risk. Putting a large share of your savings into one company or one theme leaves you exposed to a single bad outcome. Diversification does not remove risk, but it reduces dependence on any single result.
Behavioural risk. Fear of missing out is a common reason people buy at high prices. A topic being in the news is not a reason to act. Time horizon, emergency savings and existing debts matter far more than the theme of the moment.
If you want a calm review of the evidence rather than market commentary, see our reviews of weight loss drugs.
07 · The evidence behind demand
What does the clinical evidence say?
Interest in the sector is driven by clinical results, so it helps to see exactly what the evidence shows.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
A worked example: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic on a trial average, not a forecast of your own result.
Why does this matter to an investor? Because results like these explain the level of attention the field receives. But it is vital to separate three things: what a medicine does for patients, how many people can access it, and how a company's shares are priced. Strong clinical results address the first only.
Pace of results. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days.1
Review of response. Treatment response is reviewed by your prescriber: if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1 This is a reminder that treatment is individual and not every patient continues, which is a factor sometimes overlooked in investment narratives.
Different trials enrol different people and measure differently, so one trial's numbers should not be set beside another's as though they were head to head. If you read a comparison of medicines in an investment article, check whether the trials were designed to compare them directly.
Our post on new weight loss drugs in the UK summarises what has changed for patients, which is often the best way to understand where real-world demand comes from.
08 · UK access and the NHS
How do patients actually get these medicines in the UK?
UK patients get weight loss medicines either through the NHS, where access is phased, or through regulated private prescribing. Access routes shape demand, so they are relevant to anyone studying the market.
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
For private treatment, the process at a registered pharmacy is the same whatever the provider's marketing. At EverydayMeds the journey is: a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation; a review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script; dispensing by our registered pharmacy with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm; and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
We are registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC 9012878), and our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping.
On cost, Mounjaro starting pens are £169.99 per month at standard price. A new customer's first order is £40 off with code FIRST40, and every later order has an automatic £25 off (code DOSE25). Prices were checked 10 October 2026. The full Mounjaro prescription guide explains the process.
For anyone wondering how this connects to investing, the mix of NHS and private routes is one reason demand estimates are uncertain. How quickly the NHS expands access is not something we can forecast, and we do not try to.
09 · Using the medicine safely
What should patients know about using Mounjaro?
If your interest in this topic is personal as well as financial, these are the practical points about how the medicine is actually used.
Starting dose and titration. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg — higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.1
Costs depend on where you settle. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices, before discounts. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, again before discounts.
How to inject. Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site with each dose. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.13
Missed doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.13
Storage. Keep pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded. Keep the cap on to protect it from light.1
The Mounjaro pen page shows live prices and availability; all doses are in stock. This information does not replace the advice of your prescriber.
10 · Investing wisely, step by step
What is a sensible way to approach this?
A sensible approach starts with your own finances, not with a theme. These steps are general principles, not advice tailored to you.
Check the foundations. Before investing at all, most advisers suggest having an emergency fund, clearing expensive debts and understanding what you are already invested in through pensions. A theme-based purchase sits on top of those basics, not in place of them.
Decide your time horizon. Money you may need soon should not usually be exposed to market swings. Share prices of healthcare companies can move sharply on trial results, regulatory news or pricing announcements, even when the long-term picture has not changed.
Read primary sources. Company annual reports, regulatory announcements and fund factsheets say more than social media posts. Be wary of any content that dresses up a share tip as medical or scientific certainty. Regulatory documents such as the product information for a medicine are accurate on how the medicine is used, but they say nothing about how a share will perform.
Keep the medical and the financial separate. Owning shares in a manufacturer does not affect whether a medicine is right for you, and a medicine being popular should not push you towards treatment you do not need. Weight loss medicines are for adults who meet licensed criteria, assessed by a prescriber. For many people, a conversation with a pharmacist, GP or prescriber about weight management is a better use of time than studying markets.
Consider professional advice. If you are considering a meaningful sum, an FCA-authorised independent financial adviser can take your full circumstances into account.
Revisit over time. Markets, regulations and treatments evolve. Come back to your decisions periodically instead of reacting to each headline. If you want to follow how the medicines field is developing, our future of weight loss drugs page is a calm place to start.
And if what you actually want is support with your own weight, a free consultation costs nothing and carries no obligation; a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, and our team offers ongoing monthly reviews with side-effect support. You can also use GLPTrackr, our free companion app, to log your journey on iOS or Android.
