How a pharmacy supplies weight loss drugs

Prescription weight loss drugs reach you through two steps: a prescriber assesses you, then a registered pharmacy dispenses the medicine. To plan ahead, if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. 04 · Who can prescribe

Can a pharmacist prescribe weight loss drugs?

For Mounjaro, the decision to prescribe sits with a GPhC-registered prescriber who reviews your consultation, and the pharmacy then dispenses against that prescription.¹³ Your GP, an NHS weight-management service or an online prescriber can all fill that role.

Over-the-counter products are different. A pharmacist can talk you through low-strength products on the shelf, but they are not the same as licensed injectable treatments. For injections, a prescription is the safe route, and it protects you from sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.

05 · Eligibility

Who is Mounjaro licensed for?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹ It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable. If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, tell the prescriber, because doses may need adjusting to avoid low blood sugar.

You do not need to guess your suitability beforehand. The consultation is free, and if the prescriber decides treatment is unsuitable, the order is refunded automatically.

06 · What the trials show

What weight loss can Mounjaro deliver?

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.²

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, not instead of them. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

07 · How it works

How Mounjaro differs from other weight loss drugs

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.¹ Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). Mounjaro is a once-weekly pen, while liraglutide is a daily injection. When people ask about a "new drug better than Mounjaro", the honest answer is that better depends on your health, tolerance and goals, and your prescriber is the person to judge it. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. Nothing needs doing while it clears.

08 · NHS and safety

NHS access and choosing a safe pharmacy

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.
