How to Decrease Appetite: What Works and What Doesn't (October 2026)

The most reliable ways to decrease appetite are to build meals around protein and fibre, drink water, sleep properly and manage stress. If hunger stays hard to control and you have weight to lose, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a licensed prescription medicine that reduces appetite by acting on two gut-hormone receptors.1 Some people notice a change in the first week, others not until a higher dose. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Protein, fibre, water, sleep and stress management are the everyday levers that most reliably calm hunger without medication.
  • Extreme approaches such as prolonged fasting or skipping meals tend to backfire and are not something we recommend.
  • Mounjaro helps people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, alongside a reduced-calorie diet.
  • Appetite change on Mounjaro varies: some notice it in week one, others only on a higher dose, and both are normal.
  • Mounjaro is prescription-only and supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

01 · The short answer

What actually decreases appetite?

Appetite falls most reliably when meals keep you full for longer and your sleep, stress and routine are not driving extra hunger. No single trick works for everyone, so treat these as a toolkit rather than a rule book.

  • Protein at every meal: eggs, fish, lean meat, beans, lentils, yoghurt or tofu keep you satisfied for longer than refined carbohydrates.
  • Fibre-rich foods: vegetables, fruit, oats, pulses and wholegrains add bulk and slow digestion.
  • Water first: thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so a glass before eating is a cheap test.
  • Solid food over liquid calories: chewing and bulk tend to be more filling than smoothies, juices or sugary drinks.
  • Regular meals: long gaps followed by a rush to eat often lead to overeating later.
  • Sleep and stress: poor sleep and ongoing stress both push hunger and cravings up.

If you have tried these properly and still feel constantly hungry, that is useful information, not a failure of willpower. Hunger signals are partly hormonal, which is where medical options come in. Our guide to decreasing appetite naturally goes deeper on the food-first approach.

02 · Your next step

Is a prescription option relevant to you?

Medication is relevant if you are an adult living with overweight or obesity and want help alongside diet and activity, not if you simply want to eat a little less. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.

If you want to explore it, our weight loss clinic explains the process. A first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen costs £129.99 as a first-order price with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Every request is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who decides whether it is suitable for you.

03 · Everyday habits that help

Everyday habits that help you feel less hungry

Start with what is on the plate. A meal built from protein, vegetables and a fibre-rich carbohydrate usually keeps you full far longer than a meal of refined starch or sugar. Adding a modest amount of healthy fat, such as nuts, seeds or avocado, can slow things further, but keep portions sensible because these foods are energy dense.

Eating slowly matters more than it sounds. Fullness signals take time to reach the brain, so finishing a plate in a rush means you stop after you are already past comfortable. Put the fork down between mouthfuls, sit at a table and avoid eating in front of a screen.

Plan for the moments you know are difficult. Many people feel hungriest in the late afternoon or evening. Having a planned, protein-led snack, such as yoghurt or a boiled egg, is usually better than white-knuckling through and raiding the cupboard later.

Environment counts too. Keeping trigger foods out of sight, shopping from a list and not shopping hungry all reduce the number of decisions your appetite gets to make for you.

04 · Sleep, stress and cravings

Sleep, stress and emotional eating

Poor sleep and high stress can both push hunger and cravings up. A regular bedtime, a dark cool room and less caffeine late in the day are simple starting points.

Stress eating is different from physical hunger. Physical hunger builds gradually and is satisfied by most foods; emotional hunger arrives suddenly and fixes on a particular comfort food. Pausing to ask what you actually need, whether food, rest, company or a break, can break the pattern. Movement helps here, and a walk is often enough to take the edge off a craving.

If you notice a persistent change in appetite, especially a large increase you cannot explain, or a loss of appetite that is new for you, speak to your GP. Changes in appetite can be linked to other health conditions, medicines or low mood, and they deserve a proper look.

05 · How Mounjaro reduces appetite

How Mounjaro decreases appetite

Mounjaro decreases appetite by mimicking two natural gut hormones. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 That is why it is described as a tool that works alongside food and activity changes, not instead of them. The same dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.

The medicine is a once-weekly injection under the skin. It is given on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.1

06 · When appetite changes

When does appetite decrease on Mounjaro?

It varies from person to person. The 2.5mg starting weeks are about adjustment, and experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.1 Our dedicated page on how long Mounjaro takes to decrease appetite covers timing in more detail.

Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber guides the pace.

Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1 Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Think in months, not days. Judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins, because early loss includes water weight.

07 · What the trials show

What the research says about results

Reduced appetite is a means to an end, and the end is weight change. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result.

08 · What to avoid

What to avoid when trying to eat less

Crash approaches rarely work. Prolonged fasting, skipping most meals or eating on a single occasion each day can leave you ravenous, tired and more likely to overeat afterwards. They are also not a safe substitute for medical advice if you have a health condition or take medicines. If you are considering something extreme, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.

Be wary of products promising dramatic weight-loss claims. Low-cost supplements sold as natural alternatives to prescription medicines are available without assessment and carry no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Anyone offering to supply a prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription should be avoided.

Do not alter prescribed doses to change your appetite. Your prescriber guides the dose.

09 · NHS and private access

Getting help: NHS and private routes

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Privately, our process starts with a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Unsuitable orders are refunded automatically, and ongoing monthly reviews are included. Mounjaro is supplied direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution through official LillyDirect supply. You may also want to read how to lose appetite safely, or how changes in desire can show up elsewhere, such as whether Mounjaro can decrease libido.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro decrease your appetite?
Yes, reduced appetite is one of the main ways Mounjaro works. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow stomach emptying, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, and individual results vary.
When does appetite decrease on Mounjaro?
It differs between people. Some notice an appetite change and early loss in the first week on 2.5mg, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. The starting dose is mainly for adjustment, and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.
How can I stop feeling hungry between meals?
Build meals around protein and fibre, choose solid food over liquid calories, drink water and eat at regular times rather than leaving long gaps. A planned protein-led snack in your difficult hours usually works better than ignoring hunger. If hunger stays overwhelming despite this, speak to your GP or pharmacist about other options.
How do I suppress the urge to eat?
First work out whether it is physical hunger or a craving driven by stress, boredom or tiredness. Pausing, drinking water, going for a short walk and keeping trigger foods out of sight all help. Better sleep and regular, filling meals reduce the frequency of urges over time.
Is going to bed hungry good for weight loss?
Not as a strategy. Going to bed very hungry can disturb sleep, and poor sleep tends to increase hunger the next day. A small, protein-led evening snack is usually kinder than a long gap, and what matters for weight is your overall pattern across weeks, not any single evening.
Is skipping meals or extreme fasting a good way to reduce appetite?
We do not recommend it. Skipping meals or very restrictive patterns often leave people ravenous and more likely to overeat later, and they may be unsafe if you have a health condition or take medicines. Speak to your GP before trying anything extreme, and favour steady, filling meals.
Can I get a medicine to decrease my appetite in the UK?
Yes, if you are an adult with overweight or obesity and the treatment is suitable for you. Mounjaro is a licensed prescription option, supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity. NHS access is being phased in over several years.
