Does Mounjaro Affect Libido? (October 2026)

Low or high sex drive is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in the UK product information, so the medicine is not established to act directly on libido.1 Some people still notice a change while treated, because eating less, weight loss, mood, energy and other medicines can all influence desire. If your libido changes, tell your prescriber.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Reduced or increased libido is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the SmPC or patient leaflet.
  • Any change is more likely to come from indirect factors such as energy, mood, body image, other medicines or your health conditions.
  • Trial averages do not predict your own result, and nobody can promise how your sex life will change on treatment.
  • New symptoms should be discussed with your prescriber and can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro affect libido?

Mounjaro does not have an established direct effect on libido. Reduced sex drive does not appear as a listed side effect in the Summary of Product Characteristics or the patient information leaflet.113 That is not the same as saying nobody will notice a change.

Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together they help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Nothing in that description is a sex-hormone pathway. Any link to desire is therefore likely to be indirect, and it will differ from person to person.

Increased libido is not a listed side effect either. Some people feel more confident and more interested in intimacy as treatment goes on. Others feel the opposite. Neither experience is an established effect of the medicine.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to you, and what should you do?

This matters if you are deciding whether to start, or if you have started and noticed a change. If you are thinking about starting, a sex-drive concern alone is not a reason to avoid treatment, but it is worth raising in your consultation. Our free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who can look at your whole health picture, including mental health, other conditions and current medicines.

If you are already on treatment and your libido has changed, do not stop or change your dose without advice. Note when the change began, whether it followed a dose increase, and what else changed around then, such as sleep, stress, mood or a new medicine. That timeline helps your prescriber work out the likely cause.

For sex-specific detail, see our guides on libido in men and libido in women. If you want to understand the broader picture of treatment, our weight loss clinic page explains how a prescriber-led programme works.

03 · What the label says

What the product information says about sex drive

The product information does not list changes in libido as a side effect of Mounjaro.113 A symptom that is not on the leaflet's list is not a listed side effect, but tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.

Many forum threads and social posts discuss sex drive on weight-loss injections. Personal accounts cannot show whether a medicine caused a change or whether something else did.

If you notice a new symptom that worries you, discuss it with your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators spot patterns that individual patients and clinicians cannot see.

04 · Indirect factors

Indirect reasons your libido might change

Several everyday factors can move sex drive up or down while you are on treatment, and none of them is a direct drug effect. Think of them as things to consider rather than established causes.

Eating less. Mounjaro makes most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 Eating much less can leave some people feeling flat or low in energy, and tiredness is a common reason for reduced interest in sex in general. If you feel unwell or very drained, tell your prescriber rather than putting up with it.

Weight change and body image. In trials, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost substantial weight on average. These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Some people feel more comfortable in their bodies as weight comes down, and that can lift confidence and interest in intimacy. Others find that a changing body takes time to feel familiar.

Metabolic health. Weight and blood sugar are often discussed in relation to hormones and sexual function. The product information does not say that Mounjaro improves libido through this route. It is a reasonable topic to raise with your prescriber, particularly if you have type 2 diabetes.

Mood and stress. Starting a new treatment, changing your eating habits and living with a long-term condition can all affect mood. Mood and desire are closely linked. If you feel persistently low or anxious, speak to your prescriber or GP.

Other medicines and conditions. If your libido changed around the time you started Mounjaro, it is easy to blame the injection when another cause is at play.

05 · Dose changes and timing

Does timing or dose make a difference?

Treatment starts at a low dose and is stepped up over time, and some people notice how they feel shifting around these changes. Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled KwikPen in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg.1 A change in how you feel after a step up could be linked to appetite, energy or general side effects rather than to any effect on desire itself.

This is why a timeline is useful. If a change in libido closely followed a dose increase, tell your prescriber. They may suggest staying on the current dose for longer, discuss whether the dose suits you, or look for another explanation. Do not adjust doses yourself.

If you stop treatment, the medicine takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and there is no way to speed this up.1 Stopping is therefore not an instant test of whether Mounjaro was responsible. It is also a decision to make with your prescriber rather than on your own.

06 · Contraception and sex

Contraception: the practical point that does matter

One sex-life issue is well documented: Mounjaro can reduce the absorption of oral contraceptives, because it slows how quickly the stomach empties.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

This is not about desire, but it affects anyone who is sexually active. Do not rely on assumptions here. Tell your prescriber about your contraception during the consultation so the advice fits you.

07 · Talking to a prescriber

How to raise this with a prescriber

Be specific and matter-of-fact: prescribers hear questions about sex drive often, and detail helps. Describe whether your desire is lower, higher or unchanged, when it started, and whether you have other symptoms such as tiredness, low mood, nausea or difficulty with arousal.

Mention every medicine and supplement you take, including anything bought without a prescription. Our related guides on Mounjaro and circulation and whether Mounjaro can decrease libido go into those angles.

As part of treatment with us, ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are provided by the prescribing team, so you do not need to work this out alone. Any suspected side effect can also be reported via the Yellow Card scheme.19

08 · Wider weight-loss drugs

What about other weight-loss drugs?

People often ask whether the whole class of weight-loss treatments affects libido. Mounjaro's product information does not list it as a side effect.1 Other medicines have their own labels, and you should check each one rather than assuming the same applies.

If you want a broader look, see our guides on weight loss drugs and libido and GLP-1 medicines and libido. The same principle applies throughout: be wary of confident claims in either direction when the evidence is thin.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro affect your libido?
Reduced or increased libido is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the UK product information, so a direct effect is not established. Some people notice changes because of indirect factors such as energy, mood, eating less or body image. If your sex drive changes, tell your prescriber so they can look at the likely cause.
Does tirzepatide affect libido?
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro, and its product information does not list a change in libido as a side effect. It works on GIP and GLP-1 gut-hormone receptors to regulate appetite and blood sugar. Any change in desire while taking it is more likely to be indirect, and it varies between people.
Can you take Viagra while on Mounjaro?
It depends on your health, your other medicines and why you use it. Always tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine you take, including erectile dysfunction treatments, so they can check suitability for you. Do not start or stop any medicine without that advice.
Do weight loss drugs affect libido?
It depends on the medicine, and each has its own product information. For Mounjaro, a change in libido is not a listed side effect. Weight loss itself, mood, energy and other medicines can all influence desire, so any change is hard to pin on a single cause. Discuss new symptoms with your prescriber.
What are the most common side effects of Mounjaro?
The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Tell your prescriber about anything troublesome, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
Will my libido go back to normal if I stop Mounjaro?
A change in libido is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro, so there is no established direct effect to reverse. The medicine takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing speeds this up. Whether a change in desire settles depends on its cause, so speak to your prescriber before stopping treatment.
Does Mounjaro affect contraception?
Yes, in one specific way: Mounjaro can reduce the absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows how quickly the stomach empties. If you use the pill, switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
Who should I talk to if my sex drive drops on Mounjaro?
Start with your prescriber, who can review your dose, other medicines, mood and general health. They may suggest a GP appointment for further checks. You can also report the symptom through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Avoid stopping or changing your dose on your own without advice.
