Does Mounjaro Affect Libido in Women? (October 2026)

Low libido is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in the UK patient leaflet.13 Some women still notice their desire change during treatment, usually because of indirect factors such as appetite, energy, mood, body image or life stress. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Low libido is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro, and nothing in the product information says it raises desire either.
  • Desire is shaped by many things at once: mood, energy, stress, sleep, relationships, hormones and other medicines.
  • Eating much less, feeling unwell or tired in the early weeks, and dose changes can all dampen interest in sex for a while.
  • Tell your prescriber about any lasting change, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives, so ask your prescriber about contraception before you start.
In this guide

01 · The honest answer

Does Mounjaro change a woman's sex drive?

Mounjaro is not known to act directly on sexual desire, and reduced libido is not a listed side effect in the patient information leaflet.13 Equally, no licensed use of the medicine relates to improving libido. It is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

That does not mean nobody feels a difference. Treatment changes appetite, eating patterns, energy and often body weight, and each of these can touch on desire in either direction. Because the effect is indirect, it differs a great deal from one woman to the next. You can read our wider take on whether Mounjaro affects libido generally, and the same question for men taking Mounjaro.

If a new symptom troubles you, the right step is to tell the prescriber who reviews your treatment. Do not assume it is caused by the medicine, and do not assume it is not. You can also report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to me, and what should I do?

It is relevant if your desire has changed since starting treatment, or if you are worried it might. The most useful move is to note whether the change is tied to something specific, such as a recent dose increase, a week of very low appetite, poor sleep or a stressful period.

Keep a short note of when the change began, what else was going on, and whether it comes and goes. A pattern gives your prescriber something concrete to work with. Our monthly clinical reviews are there for exactly this kind of question, and the team can talk through side-effect support at any point.

03 · What the label says

What the product information says about libido

Reduced sexual desire is not among the effects listed for Mounjaro.113

That is a statement about what has been established, not a promise that no individual will ever feel a change. Regulators rely partly on people reporting new or unexpected symptoms. If you think a symptom might be linked to your treatment, the Yellow Card scheme is how it reaches the MHRA.19

04 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works, and why that matters here

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

Nothing in that description concerns sexual function. The effects are on appetite, digestion and blood sugar. Any link to libido therefore runs through the body's response to eating less, losing weight and feeling different day to day, not through a direct action on desire.

The same logic applies to other medicines in the same family. The wider question is covered in our guides on GLP-1 medicines and libido and on whether weight loss drugs affect libido. Each product has its own product information, and none of them should be assumed to behave identically.

05 · Indirect factors

Indirect factors that could raise or lower desire

Several everyday factors can move libido while someone is on treatment, and they pull in different directions. None of them is a proven effect of tirzepatide on desire.

Factors that might lift desire:

  • Feeling more confident or comfortable in your body as your weight changes.
  • More energy and more movement through the day.
  • Better mood from feeling in control of your health.
  • Less discomfort from weight-related problems such as joint pain or breathlessness.

Factors that might lower desire:

  • Eating far less than your body needs, especially in the early weeks or after a dose increase.
  • Nausea, tiredness or digestive upset that makes intimacy unappealing.
  • Low mood, anxiety or stress, which are common drivers of reduced desire whatever medicine you take.
  • Poor sleep, a busy household, or friction in a relationship.

Because treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them,2 eating enough of the right foods and keeping active matter for how you feel overall. Large weight loss is possible, as trial averages show, but individual results vary and your experience may look quite different.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

06 · Hormones and life stage

Hormones, perimenopause and other causes of low libido

Many women are at a stage of life when desire naturally shifts. Perimenopause and menopause can bring changes in mood, sleep, vaginal comfort and interest in sex, and these may start whether or not you take Mounjaro. If your symptoms arrived around the same time as treatment, it is easy to blame the medicine when the cause lies elsewhere.

Other common contributors include low mood, anxiety, long-term stress, pain during sex, relationship difficulties, and the side effects of other medicines. A GP or your prescriber can help sort out which of these might apply to you.

Low desire is also very common and often temporary. Many women find it eases once the underlying trigger, such as a rough few weeks, a dose change or a stressful period, passes. If it persists or distresses you, that is reason enough to ask for help, and there is nothing embarrassing about raising it.

07 · Contraception and safety

Contraception, pregnancy plans and Mounjaro

One practical point does matter for sexual health: Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you use the pill, speak to your prescriber before starting, and ask what extra or alternative protection they advise.

This is separate from libido, but it is the area where women on treatment most often need clear guidance. A lower or unchanged interest in sex does not remove the need for reliable contraception, and a sudden increase in desire does not change it either.

Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

08 · Talking it through

When to speak to someone about a change in desire

Speak to your prescriber or GP if a change in libido lasts, worsens, or bothers you or your partner. You do not need to wait for a scheduled review.

It helps to be specific about what has changed. Is it desire itself, arousal, comfort during sex, or the energy to be intimate? Each points to different explanations. Mention any other medicines or supplements you take, recent changes in mood or sleep, and where you are in your menstrual or menopausal cycle.

Your prescriber may suggest looking at your dose, your eating pattern, other medicines, or whether something unrelated deserves attention. They may also advise you to see your GP for further checks. If you suspect the medicine is involved, ask them to help you report it. You can also report it yourself through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Support for customers is available by email, account chat and phone during weekday office hours, and our prescribing team provides side-effect support alongside ongoing monthly reviews.

As for NHS access, Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro affect libido in women?
Reduced libido is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the SmPC or patient leaflet. Some women notice changes through indirect routes such as appetite, energy, mood or body image. If your desire changes and it concerns you, tell your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.
Can Mounjaro increase libido?
A woman might feel more interested in sex if she has more energy, better mood or more confidence in her body during treatment, but those are indirect and vary from person to person. Do not expect it as a benefit.
Does GLP-1 affect libido?
Each product has its own product information, so check the leaflet for the medicine you take. Indirect factors such as eating less, feeling unwell, mood and weight change may influence desire. Speak to your prescriber about any lasting change.
Does loss of libido come back?
Often it does, particularly when the cause is temporary, such as a stressful period, poor sleep, low appetite after a dose change or an illness. If it lasts or distresses you, see your prescriber or GP, because treatable causes such as mood, thyroid problems, medicines or menopause-related changes may be involved.
Does perimenopause cause low libido?
It can. Perimenopause brings hormonal changes that may affect mood, sleep, comfort during sex and interest in it, and these changes can occur whether or not you take Mounjaro. If symptoms began around the same time as treatment, ask a GP or your prescriber to help work out the cause rather than assuming the medicine is responsible.
What raises libido quickly?
There is no quick fix to recommend. Libido usually improves by addressing its cause: better sleep, lower stress, enough food, treating low mood, reviewing other medicines, and menopause or hormone checks where relevant. Low-cost supplements sold for desire have no clinical oversight. A GP or prescriber can help you find a sensible approach.
Does Mounjaro affect birth control?
Yes, it can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows stomach emptying. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies whatever your level of desire, so it matters even if sex is not currently a priority. Read the patient information leaflet for the official guidance.
