Can Mounjaro Go in Hand Luggage? UK Travel Guide (October 2026)
Yes, Mounjaro should go in your hand luggage, not your checked bag. Carry the pen in its original box with the pharmacy label visible, keep it cool, and tell security staff you are carrying medication. The hold can be too cold, bags can be delayed or lost, and you cannot reach a checked bag mid-journey. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Pack Mounjaro in your hand luggage: it stays with you, within reach and away from hold-temperature extremes.
-
Keep pens in the original box with the dispensing label showing your name and the medicine.
-
Store unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C; once in use, a pen can stay out of the fridge for up to 30 days (not above 30°C).
-
Declare medication at security and carry a cool bag; rules on medical liquids differ by airport and airline, so check ahead.
-
Pack your whole supply plus spares for delays, and bring needles and a travel sharps solution.

01 · The core answer
Hand luggage or hold luggage: which is right for Mounjaro?
Hand luggage is the right choice. Mounjaro is a prescription medicine you inject once weekly, and the pen needs temperature care that the aircraft hold cannot reliably give. Keeping it with you also means a delayed or lost suitcase cannot leave you without treatment.
For more on the checked-bag side, see our guides on putting pens in checked luggage and the hold specifically.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg.1 Because it is a pen, not a loose vial, it is simple to carry in a small insulated pouch.
02 · Your next step
What to do before you travel
Plan around your injection day and your return date, not just the flight. Work out which injection days fall during the trip, and bring the pen you are currently using plus any unopened pens you will need. If you are unsure whether your supply covers the trip, speak to your prescriber well before you leave.
If you have not yet started treatment, you can begin with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber on our Mounjaro pen page, where the 2.5mg starting pen costs £169.99 at the standard price (checked 12 October 2026). For the wider picture, see our weight loss clinic.
| Where it travels | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hand luggage, in an insulated pouch | Recommended | Within reach, temperature-managed, not exposed to a lost or delayed bag |
| Checked or hold luggage | Avoid | Less temperature control, no access in flight, risk of delay or loss |
| Pocket or loose in a bag with no protection | Not ideal | Pen can be knocked or overheated, and the label may be missing |
| Left in a hot car or on a sunny window ledge | Avoid | Heat exposure outside the stated storage conditions |

03 · Airport security
Going through airport security with Mounjaro
Security staff deal with medication every day, and the simplest approach is to tell them at the start. Put the pen, its box and any cool pack in a separate tray or bag if asked, and say plainly that it is injectable prescription medication.
Medical liquids and the cool packs that keep them cold are generally treated differently from ordinary toiletries under liquid limits, but the exact process varies between airports and countries. Check your departure airport's website and your airline's medical-items guidance before you travel, rather than relying on what worked on a previous trip.
Keep everything easy to reach. A tidy, labelled pouch speeds up screening and reduces the chance of a pen being handled roughly or opened. If staff ask to inspect the pen, let them, but ask for it not to be put through anything that could damage it, and request a hand check if you are concerned.
Do not expect to decant anything. A KwikPen is a sealed, pre-filled device, and there is no reason to transfer the medicine into another container. Keep it as dispensed.
04 · Keeping the pen cool
How to keep Mounjaro at the right temperature on a journey
Unopened pens are stored in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date.13 Once you start using a pen, it can be kept out of the fridge for up to 30 days (not above 30°C).1 That in-use allowance is what makes travel manageable: the pen you are currently injecting from does not need a fridge for the whole trip.
For unopened spare pens, an insulated medical cool bag with a cool pack is the usual answer. Keep the pen from touching the cool pack directly, because very cold contact is a different risk from warmth. A thin layer of cloth or the original box between the two does the job.
If you are unsure how long a spare pen has been outside the fridge, or the pen may have been frozen or overheated, do not guess. Check the patient information leaflet and ask your pharmacy or prescriber before using it.13
On arrival, put unopened pens in a fridge if your accommodation has one. A hotel mini-fridge is fine, but check it is cool rather than freezing, since some run very cold at the back.
05 · Why not the hold
Why checked luggage is the wrong place
The hold is a poor environment for a temperature-sensitive medicine. You cannot check on the pen, you cannot add a cool pack mid-journey, and you have no control over what the bag goes through. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.13
There is also a practical argument. Checked bags are delayed, misrouted and sometimes lost. If your pen is inside, you may arrive with no medication and a missed weekly dose to manage in a place where you cannot easily get a prescription. A medicine you rely on belongs with you, the same way your passport and phone do.
Some people travel with a small bag that is both the cabin bag and the medication bag. If your airline is strict about the number of cabin items, check whether medical items are allowed in addition to your normal allowance. Many airlines allow this, but policy differs, so confirm it with yours.
06 · Paperwork and labels
Do you need proof of prescription to fly?
Carrying proof is sensible, and the easiest proof is the dispensing label on the original box showing your name, the medicine and the pharmacy. Keep the pen in that box for the whole journey. A pen with no packaging is much harder to explain at security or at a border.
For international trips, a short letter from your prescriber stating the medicine, that it is an injectable for personal use and that you need to carry needles can save time. Some countries have their own rules about bringing in injectable medicines, so check the destination's official guidance for travellers before you go.
Everything we dispense is a genuine KwikPen sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with clear labelling. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order. If you need a letter or a prescriber's note for travel, contact our support team on weekdays and ask what can be provided.
Keep digital copies as well, such as a photo of the label and your order confirmation, in case a bag is searched or mislaid.
07 · Needles and sharps
Carrying needles and disposing of them while away
If you carry pen needles, keep them in their original packaging and in the same medication pouch as the pen. Security staff are used to seeing them alongside injectable medication, and a prescription label makes the situation clear.
You will also need somewhere to dispose of used needles. A small portable sharps container is the usual answer for a trip. Do not put loose used needles in a bag or bin where someone could be hurt. If you will be away for a while, ask your pharmacy or prescriber what is sensible for your trip.
Bring more needles than you expect to use. A dropped or contaminated needle should not be reused, and a delay can add an extra injection day to your time away.
08 · Injection day and delays
Injection day, time zones and delays
Plan your weekly injection around travel rather than leaving it to chance. If your usual day falls on a travel day, decide in advance whether to inject before you leave or after you arrive, and talk it through with your prescriber if you are unsure. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other.
Crossing time zones can make the timing feel awkward. Your prescriber can advise on how to handle a long-haul trip. Our team can also help through the ongoing monthly reviews we include with treatment.
Travel can affect appetite, hydration and routine, and these can influence how you feel on treatment. If you have new symptoms while away, speak to a clinician and report any suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
09 · Other GLP-1 pens
Do the same rules apply to Ozempic and other GLP-1 pens?
The practical approach is the same for any injectable GLP-1 pen: carry it in hand luggage, keep it in its labelled box, protect it from heat and freezing, and follow the storage instructions in that product's own leaflet. Those instructions differ between products, so do not assume a Mounjaro storage rule applies to a different pen.
Wegovy and Mounjaro are both once-weekly injections, while liraglutide products such as Saxenda are daily injections, so a trip involves more doses and more pens. Whatever you use, pack enough for the whole trip plus spares.
