A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Prediabetes alone, with a BMI below 27, does not meet the licence. It counts as a weight-related condition if your BMI is between 27 and 30.
-
With a BMI of 30 or above you meet the licensed weight criterion whether or not you have prediabetes.
-
NHS access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition.
-
Private treatment is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).

01 · The short answer
Can you get Mounjaro if you have prediabetes?
You can get Mounjaro with prediabetes if you also meet the weight-management criteria. In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above. It is also licensed for a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. The licence names prediabetes in its list of those conditions, alongside high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.111
So there are two routes in. If your BMI is 30 or above, prediabetes is not needed for you to meet the licence. If your BMI is between 27 and 30, prediabetes can be the qualifying condition that makes you eligible. If your BMI is below 27, the weight-management licence does not cover you, even with prediabetes.
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.1
02 · NHS or private
NHS or private: which route fits prediabetes?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially a BMI of 40 or more with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Whether your GP can offer it depends on where your local area is in that rollout. Ask your practice directly.
The licence and the NHS criteria are different things. The licence sets who the medicine can be prescribed for. NHS criteria set who is prioritised for funded treatment while capacity builds. Many people who meet the licensed criteria but are not yet in an NHS priority group choose regulated private treatment rather than wait.4
Our free online consultation is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Start your free consultation to find out whether you qualify.
03 · Costs
What Mounjaro costs if you are eligible
Each Mounjaro pen lasts four weeks. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Every later order is £25 off the standard price, applied automatically (code DOSE25). Standard prices run from £169.99 at 2.5mg to £218.99 at 5mg and £279.99 at 7.5mg. The 10mg pen is £290.99, 12.5mg is £319.99 and 15mg is £329.99. All six doses are in stock.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order £25 less. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pen range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month (checked 12 October 2026). The gap between providers for the same dose ranges from £27 to £41. It is worth comparing before you commit. You can see all options on our weight loss treatments page.
04 · Licensed criteria explained
What the licence says about prediabetes
The licence for weight management is the starting point for anyone with prediabetes. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above. It is also licensed for adults with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have at least one weight-related condition. The conditions listed include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.1
That wording matters. Prediabetes is not a standalone indication, so having it does not by itself entitle you to Mounjaro. It acts as a qualifying condition for people whose BMI sits in the 27 to 30 band. Above a BMI of 30, the weight criterion is already met.
The licence also states how the medicine is used. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. That is part of the licensed use, not an optional extra.111
Meeting the criteria opens the door to a prescriber's assessment. It does not settle the outcome. A prescriber reviews your BMI, your medical history and your current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable for you. That individual judgement is why we use a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than an automatic yes or no.
Some practical points follow. First, know your current BMI from a recent measurement. Second, have your prediabetes result to hand if you can, such as the blood test your GP arranged. Third, list the medicines you take, including anything bought over the counter. These help the prescriber assess you accurately.
If you are unsure which category you fall into, a consultation is a sensible next step. It is free and carries no obligation, and a prescriber can tell you plainly whether treatment is suitable. If you have other conditions, our guides on Mounjaro with sleep apnoea and Mounjaro on the NHS with PCOS explain how those conditions interact with eligibility.
05 · NHS access in detail
Getting Mounjaro on the NHS with prediabetes
NHS access to Mounjaro exists, but it is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially a BMI of 40 or more with four or more qualifying conditions.46
For someone with prediabetes, this means your NHS chances depend on your BMI and on how many other conditions you have. A BMI of at least 35 with prediabetes as the weight-related condition matches the NICE recommendation. Whether your GP can start treatment now depends on the rollout stage. The rollout is expected to take years, so the practical answer can differ from one area to the next.
The licensed private criteria are wider than the NHS priority groups. A BMI between 27 and 30 with prediabetes is covered by the licence, but it sits outside the NICE recommendation. That gap is one reason people look at private treatment.
If you want to try the NHS route first, book a routine appointment. Take your recent weight and height, your prediabetes blood result and a list of your medicines. Ask whether your practice is offering Mounjaro yet, and which group you would fall into. Ask also whether a local weight-management service is an alternative. Your GP can then tell you what is available now and what is planned.
You do not lose anything by asking. If the answer is not yet, you can decide whether to wait or to use a regulated private service. Whichever you choose, tell your GP about it, so your records and your prediabetes monitoring stay joined up. Our guide to Mounjaro with diabetes covers what changes if prediabetes progresses.
06 · How Mounjaro works
How Mounjaro works for someone with prediabetes
Mounjaro works by acting on two gut-hormone receptors at once. Tirzepatide, its active ingredient, is the first treatment of its kind to activate both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That supports a reduced-calorie diet, which is how the medicine is meant to be used. It is not a replacement for diet and activity. It is a tool that makes them easier to sustain.
The dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). The improved response to insulin is one reason Mounjaro is also licensed for type 2 diabetes.
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection in a pre-filled multi-dose pen, the KwikPen. It comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Treatment starts at 2.5mg and steps up over time under prescriber guidance. Our team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments, plus side-effect support. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing is shipped automatically.
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. Nothing needs doing while it clears, and there is no way to speed it up.1
07 · What trials showed
What the SURMOUNT-1 trial found
The main trial behind the weight-management licence is SURMOUNT-1, which enrolled 2,539 adults. People taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks. The comparison group, on lifestyle changes alone, lost 3.1%.2
These are trial averages, and individual results vary. A trial average does not predict your own result. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
To make the percentages concrete, take a worked example. For someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg, 19.5% is about 19.5 kg and 20.9% is about 21 kg. Your own starting weight, dose and habits will change the real figure.
If improving your blood sugar is your main goal, discuss it with your GP and prescriber, who can arrange the right tests and follow-up.
It is also worth keeping expectations realistic. The trial figures describe groups taking a specific dose for 72 weeks, and the highest figures relate to the highest dose. Your prescriber will usually step the dose up gradually, according to how you respond and tolerate the medicine, rather than aiming straight for the top.
08 · What to tell your prescriber
What your prescriber will want to know
Your prescriber reviews your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.1 Being open about your health makes the review more useful, and it keeps you safer.
Start with your prediabetes. Say when it was diagnosed, what your most recent blood result was, and whether your GP is monitoring you. Mention any other weight-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea or cardiovascular disease. Several of these can also count towards eligibility.
List every medicine you take, including those you buy yourself. If you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell the prescriber, because doses of those may need adjusting, and low blood sugar is a risk to plan for. This is a reason to speak to a clinician, not a reason to avoid treatment automatically.
Contraception is another point. Mounjaro can reduce the absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows stomach emptying. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Your prescriber will advise on what to do.7
Once you start, report any new symptom to your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Read the patient information leaflet that comes with the pen for the full list of side effects and warnings.13
Our guides cover several related situations, including taking Mounjaro without a gallbladder and Mounjaro with hyperthyroidism. If your situation is not covered, the consultation is the place to raise it. A prescriber can tell you if Mounjaro is suitable or if another approach is better for you.
09 · If prediabetes becomes diabetes
If prediabetes progresses to type 2 diabetes
Mounjaro is also licensed for type 2 diabetes, so the same medicine can remain relevant if prediabetes progresses. In type 2 diabetes it improves blood sugar control (HbA1c) and supports weight loss.18
What changes is how care is organised. If you have type 2 diabetes, treatment and monitoring are coordinated differently. You should tell your prescriber and your usual diabetes team, so that care stays joined up.5 Your diabetes team may also manage other medicines you take.
If you start Mounjaro while you have prediabetes, tell your GP. This keeps your records accurate and lets your GP interpret future blood results with the full picture. It also means someone is watching your blood sugar over time, which a weight-management prescriber alone may not be doing.
If you already have a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, our guide on Mounjaro and type 2 diabetes covers that situation in more detail. The two situations share a medicine but not a pathway, and it is worth reading the one that matches you.
Whatever your stage, the principle is the same. Use the medicine alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, keep your clinicians informed, and review your plan regularly.
10 · Ordering and safe supply
How ordering works and how to buy safely
Ordering from us takes three steps. First, complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses your pen, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
Delivery is free next-day tracked delivery by DPD, in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. Support runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. The pens are genuine KwikPens, and all six doses from 2.5mg to 15mg are stocked. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically.
Buying safely matters, because counterfeit weight-loss injections are a recognised risk. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.7 Only use a pharmacy you can check on the public GPhC register. Our registration number is 9012878, and you can check it on the GPhC register.12 Treat anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription as a warning sign.
When you are ready, buy Mounjaro through our order page, or start with the free consultation. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Switching from another provider at 15mg? Your first order is £289.99. Every later order is £25 off the standard price.
We also offer GLPTrackr, a free companion app for iOS and Android that helps you track your GLP-1 journey. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
