-
At a BMI of 30 or above you do not need a weight-related condition to be considered for weight management.
-
In SURMOUNT-OSA, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year in adults with obesity.

In this guide
01 · The short answer
Can you get Mounjaro if you have sleep apnoea?
Yes, having sleep apnoea does not rule out Mounjaro, and obstructive sleep apnoea is listed as a qualifying weight-related condition. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above. It is also licensed at a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition, and obstructive sleep apnoea is named among those conditions.1
It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.1
Mounjaro's UK licence covers weight management and type 2 diabetes. Sleep apnoea is not a separate licensed indication on its own. It is one of the conditions that makes weight management appropriate. Our guide on whether Mounjaro is prescribed for sleep apnoea covers the distinction in more detail.
02 · Where you fit
How your BMI changes the answer
Your BMI decides whether sleep apnoea is the deciding factor or simply one more item in your history.
| Your situation | Does the licence cover you? | What sleep apnoea adds |
|---|---|---|
| BMI 30 or above, with sleep apnoea | Yes, subject to prescriber review | Not required for eligibility, but relevant to your overall health picture |
| BMI 27 to under 30, with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea | Yes, subject to prescriber review | It is the weight-related condition that makes you eligible |
| BMI 27 to under 30, no weight-related condition | Not on the licensed criteria | Not applicable |
| BMI under 27 | Not on the licensed criteria | Not applicable |
A diagnosis matters. Having snoring or tiredness alone is not the same thing, so tell the prescriber exactly what you were told and when. If you also have prediabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, mention those too. Our page on getting Mounjaro with prediabetes explains how another qualifying condition fits in.
03 · NHS or private
NHS or private: what is realistic?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6
Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. If you think you may qualify on the NHS, ask your GP what is available locally.
04 · Cost and ordering
What it costs and how to order privately
You start on the 2.5mg pen, and the Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 at the starting dose. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. An automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). All six doses are in stock.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg.
Ordering works in four steps:
- Complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Start your free consultation here.
- A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, including your sleep apnoea. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Our registered pharmacy dispenses your pen, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
- Delivery is free, next-day and tracked, in discreet temperature-controlled packaging. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order.
Our supply comes through official LillyDirect, so you receive genuine KwikPens direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Our Buy Mounjaro page has the full dose list.
05 · What the trial showed
What the SURMOUNT-OSA trials showed
In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity. On average, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year.16 Some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16
These are trial averages, so they do not predict your own result. Your outcome depends on your starting point, your dose and how well you keep up the diet and activity changes that go with treatment.
The wider weight-loss evidence comes from SURMOUNT-1, a trial of 2,539 adults. On average people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
Our guides on Mounjaro and sleep apnoea and GLP-1 medicines for sleep apnoea go further into the evidence.
06 · CPAP and Mounjaro
Do you still use CPAP on Mounjaro?
Yes, if you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed.16 Mounjaro is not a replacement for a treatment your clinic has prescribed.
Your sleep team decides when, or whether, your CPAP settings or use should change. Do not stop or adjust your machine on your own because you have started a weight-loss medicine. Tell the prescriber at your consultation that you use CPAP and which clinic follows you.
If your symptoms change, such as sleepiness, snoring or morning headaches, tell your sleep clinic and our prescribing team. Ongoing monthly reviews are included with your treatment, so there is a regular point to raise this.
07 · Will it go away?
Will sleep apnoea go away if I lose weight?
In SURMOUNT-OSA, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year on average, and some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16 That is an improvement for many people, not a cure for everyone.
Any change to your sleep apnoea treatment should be agreed with your sleep clinic, ideally after a repeat assessment. Weight loss is only one factor. Your clinic can tell you what else is relevant in your case.
08 · How Mounjaro works
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
It has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 If you have other conditions, such as a history of gallbladder removal, see our page on taking Mounjaro without a gallbladder.
09 · Other sleep apnoea questions
Other questions people ask about sleep apnoea
Which weight-loss drug is approved for sleep apnoea? For Mounjaro, the UK licence is for weight management and type 2 diabetes, with sleep apnoea named as a weight-related condition that supports eligibility.1 For other medicines, figures and licensing vary, so ask your prescriber. Our overview of weight-loss injections for sleep apnoea compares the options.
If you notice any new symptom after starting Mounjaro, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 You can also browse all weight loss treatments we offer.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
11 · Before you order
Buying safely and what to tell the prescriber
Buy only from a registered pharmacy, because Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Avoid any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.7 You can check our registration (9012878) on the GPhC register.12
At your consultation, be ready to share:
- your height and weight, and your sleep apnoea diagnosis
- whether you use CPAP, and which clinic follows you
- every medicine and supplement you take
- other conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or prediabetes
Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
