A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
You can always ask your GP about Mounjaro; whether they can prescribe it on the NHS depends on the phased rollout and your clinical need.
-
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, with the highest-need groups first.
-
A GP saying "not yet" is not a judgement on you; it reflects how slowly the NHS rollout is being phased in.
-
If you meet the licensed criteria but are not yet in an NHS group, regulated private treatment is another route.
-
The standard price of the 2.5mg starter pen is £169.99; a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

01 · The short answer
Can you ask your GP to prescribe Mounjaro?
Yes, you can raise Mounjaro with your GP at any appointment about your weight or health. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, so the answer you get depends on where you sit in that rollout.46
NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years.
So there are three realistic outcomes from asking:
- You are in a current NHS group. Your GP or a commissioned weight-management service can start the process.
- You meet the NICE criteria but your group is not open yet. Your GP can note your details and tell you what they know about local timing.
- You do not meet NHS criteria but may meet the licensed ones. Mounjaro may still be suitable privately, which is a separate route.
02 · Getting the most from the appointment
How to ask your doctor about Mounjaro
Book a routine appointment and say at the start that you want to discuss weight-management medication. A focused request gets a better answer than a general chat at the end of another consultation.
Bring the facts a clinician will need:
- Your current height and weight, so your BMI can be worked out.
- A list of weight-related conditions you have been diagnosed with, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
- Your current medicines, including anything for diabetes.
- What you have already tried, such as dietary changes, activity, and any previous weight-management support.
Then ask direct questions. "Am I in a group the NHS is prescribing Mounjaro to now?" and "If not, do I go on a list, and who would contact me?" give you something concrete to leave with. Ask them to record your request in your notes.
Mounjaro is only ever used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so expect your GP to talk about those too.1 That is part of the treatment, not a brush-off.
03 · Your options
What to do if your GP cannot prescribe it yet
If you are told it is not available to you yet, you have two sensible options: wait for your NHS group to open, or consider regulated private treatment if you meet the licensed criteria. Many people who meet those criteria choose private treatment rather than waiting for a rollout that is expected to take years.4
Our Mounjaro online service works like this: a free online consultation, review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and dispensing by our registered pharmacy. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Across the UK pharmacies we track, 2.5mg starting pens range from £143.96 to £179.99 (checked 11 October 2026); the Mounjaro pen at our standard 2.5mg price is £169.99. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).
The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid. You can start your free consultation without obligation.
| Route | Who it suits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| NHS via your GP | Adults in a group the rollout has reached, such as the highest-need groups first | Phased access; availability depends on your clinical need and local services |
| Private, online | Adults who meet the licensed criteria but are not yet in an NHS group | Free consultation, prescriber review, standard pen price from £169.99 at 2.5mg |

04 · NHS criteria explained
What are the GP criteria for receiving Mounjaro on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 That is the recommendation; how fast it reaches everyone who qualifies is a separate question, because rollout is phased.
The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6 Full rollout is expected to take years. In practice that means two people with the same BMI can get different answers depending on how many qualifying conditions each has and which group is open.
If you want a fuller walk-through of who prescribes it, see our guide on what kind of doctor can prescribe Mounjaro.
05 · Why a GP may say no
Why won't my doctor prescribe me Mounjaro?
The most common reason is timing: NHS access is phased in over several years, starting with the highest-need groups.6 If you are not yet in a group being prescribed to, a GP cannot move you ahead of it, however reasonable your request.
Other reasons are also worth knowing:
- Your BMI or conditions do not yet match the group being offered. The NICE recommendation is BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the early rollout is narrower than that.4
- A medical reason. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding if it is suitable.1
- Local service arrangements. Some care is routed through specialist services rather than the surgery, so ask who handles referrals.
A refusal today is not necessarily permanent. Ask what would change the answer and whether you can be reviewed again. Our page on why doctors decline to prescribe Mounjaro goes into more detail.
06 · Licensed eligibility
Who is Mounjaro licensed for?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.111
It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.1
This licensed range is wider than the NHS groups being prescribed to first. That gap is why some people are eligible clinically but not yet through the NHS. For a related angle, see whether your doctor can prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss.
07 · What Mounjaro is
What Mounjaro is and how it works
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages; individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.2
08 · Poor man's Ozempic
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
"Poor man's Ozempic" and "nature's Ozempic" are marketing labels for low-cost supplements such as berberine. They are available cheaply without assessment, with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised.
They are not the same as a licensed medicine. Mounjaro, by contrast, is prescription-only and licensed, with its results published in named trials.
Be wary of anyone offering to supply prescription weight-loss injections without a consultation or prescription. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.7 Buy only from a pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is registration 9012878.
09 · Other GP options
What will a GP prescribe for weight loss?
A GP will usually start with a conversation about diet, activity and any conditions linked to your weight, then discuss which treatments, if any, fit your situation. Your prescriber can advise on the options that suit you.
If you want a medicine-by-medicine view, our weight loss treatments overview compares what is available through us. For the practical steps of making the request, see asking your doctor for Mounjaro.

- Dispensing and dispatch: dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
- Delivery: free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

For planning, if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order £25 less. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or Klarna, with pay-monthly options and no subscriptions. Repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing ships automatically.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
