Where you can get a Mounjaro or Wegovy prescription

There are four legitimate routes: your GP, an NHS specialist weight-management service, a private clinic, and a regulated online pharmacy. All of them must assess you before prescribing.

Whichever route you choose, check the provider is registered. UK pharmacies appear on the GPhC public register, and ours is registered under 9012878.¹²

03 · Choosing

Should you ask for Mounjaro or Wegovy?

Both are effective licensed treatments, and your prescriber decides which suits you. In the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial, adults on tirzepatide (Mounjaro) lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).¹⁵ Which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.¹⁵

04 · NHS route

Getting Mounjaro or Wegovy through the NHS

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.⁴ The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years, so being eligible on paper does not mean you will be offered treatment this month. Your GP is the right starting point: they can tell you whether you fall into a current group and how local services are organised.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. 05 · Eligibility criteria

Who is eligible for a prescription?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition.¹ Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹

It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.¹¹ Meeting the BMI figure does not oblige a prescriber to prescribe, and a prescriber may decide it is not right for you.

06 · What the evidence shows

What the trials show for each medicine

Each medicine has its own trial results, and SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial comparing them directly. In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages and individual results vary.

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

In STEP 1, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) lost on average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.⁹ In SURMOUNT-5, the average loss over 72 weeks was 22.8 kg on tirzepatide versus 15.0 kg on semaglutide.¹⁵

07 · Side effects to discuss

Side effects: what to raise with your prescriber

Most Mounjaro side effects are digestive, and these are worth discussing before you start. The most common side effects of Mounjaro, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. They are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.

Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, including oral contraceptives, because tirzepatide can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives as stomach emptying slows.⁷ The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar.

08 · Ozempic, tablets, supplements

Ozempic, tablets and "natural" alternatives

A regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg).¹⁸

There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.¹ Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron), approved in August 2026.²⁰²¹ They are different medicines with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only. Other options work differently: orlistat blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses, and Saxenda (liraglutide) is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. "Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. They are low-cost and need no assessment, which is part of the problem.

09 · Avoiding unsafe sellers

How to spot an unsafe seller

Anyone offering to supply Mounjaro or Wegovy without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. Both are prescription-only medicines, and counterfeit weight-loss pens have been the subject of MHRA alerts.⁷

• Check the pharmacy is on the GPhC register.¹²
• Be wary of sellers who promise specific results or faster results outside a licensed pathway.
• Avoid "research" peptides, compounded copies and other GLP-1 products offered alongside Mounjaro. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain, and Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines.
• Ask where the pens come from. Ours are genuine KwikPens from official LillyDirect supply.

Never run two GLP-1 medicines together. If you already use another one, your prescriber should plan the changeover, not a seller or social media account.

10 · Switching from Wegovy

Already on Wegovy and thinking of switching?

There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide, so a switch is done under prescriber supervision. Typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval is observed, and Mounjaro is started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate. That is often the 2.5mg starting dose, sometimes adjusted based on your history.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹

12 · Planning the cost

Planning what a private prescription costs

The consultation is free, so your cost is the pen itself. If you step up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. A new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less.

A first year of 13 pens costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices before discounts. For other maintenance doses, the monthly standard price is £244.99 at 7.5mg, £274.99 at 10mg and £289.99 at 12.5mg.
