01 · The short answer

What should you eat when you're on Mounjaro?

Eat food you enjoy, built around protein, vegetables and fibre, in smaller portions than you were used to. Mounjaro is a weekly injection that helps most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 Your food choices decide how comfortable that feels and how much lean tissue you keep along the way.

No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas. Some choices simply work better than others.13 Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the goal is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.1

Choose more oftenWhy it helpsGo easier onWhy
Lean protein: chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, lentils, Greek yoghurtProtects muscle when appetite is lowDeep-fried and greasy takeawaysOften sit heavily and can worsen nausea
Vegetables and saladFibre, volume and nutrients for few caloriesVery sugary snacks and drinksMany people feel worse after them, and the calories add up fast
Wholegrains, oats, beans, potatoesFibre and steady energyVery large portionsSlower stomach emptying makes big meals uncomfortable
Water, tea, coffee without added syrupsFluids matter more when you eat lessHigh-calorie coffee drinks and alcoholEasy places for the calorie deficit to leak

Our related guides go deeper on individual foods, such as whether tuna works on treatment and how spaghetti bolognese fits in. If you want a second take on meal planning, see what to eat when using Mounjaro.

02 · What to do next

Is this relevant to me, and what next?

If you are already injecting, use it to shape your shopping and your plate. If you are still deciding, our weight loss clinic explains how a prescriber-led programme works.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

03 · Protein and muscle

Why protein matters most

Protein is the single food priority on Mounjaro, because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue. Protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.4

The two levers are adequate protein and resistance exercise two or more times a week. In practice that means including a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.4

Practical ways to do this when you do not feel hungry:

  • Start the meal with the protein, then add vegetables and carbohydrate if you still have room.
  • Keep easy options to hand: eggs, tinned fish, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, cooked chicken, tofu, beans and lentils.
  • Choose protein-rich snacks over biscuits when small appetites make every bite count.
  • Build meals around familiar dishes, such as a lamb dish with vegetables or a lean pork meal, rather than forcing unfamiliar food.

If you are struggling to eat enough protein, raise it at your monthly review.

04 · Portions and nausea

Smaller, slower meals and settling your stomach

The most useful change is portion size and pace. Because the stomach empties more slowly, large portions sit heavily, and smaller, slower meals work better.13

If you are asking what to eat to settle your stomach, the answer is mostly about what to ease off. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, so plainer, lighter meals are the sensible starting point on days when you feel queasy.13 Eat slowly, stop when you feel comfortably full rather than stuffed, and keep sipping fluids.

Side effects can be most noticeable around dose changes. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention. For severe, persistent stomach pain, get medical help straight away. You can also report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

How many meals should you eat? There is no set number. The consistent advice is a protein source at every meal, with portions sized to your appetite. Some people prefer a few modest meals, others add a planned snack. Pick the pattern that lets you hit your protein and fluids without discomfort.

05 · Fluids and hydration

Drink enough, more than usual

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class of medicine.13

Keep water within reach through the day. Tea, coffee and sugar-free drinks all count towards your fluids.

Treat an inability to keep fluids down as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.13

06 · Coffee and alcohol

Coffee, tea and alcohol

Coffee and tea are fine, because there is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine.13 Two practical notes apply. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. The "coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.

Alcohol has no direct interaction with Mounjaro, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule, and many people find their desire for alcohol drops on treatment.13

07 · Vitamins and supplements

Do you need vitamins or supplements?

No supplement is required with Mounjaro. Eating much less can leave gaps, though, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.13

Be wary of products sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters". They are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.13

08 · Exercise and results

Food, exercise and getting the most from treatment

The way to get the most from Mounjaro is to treat food and movement as part of the treatment. Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra.4 Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle.

Start where you are and build. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost more than those making lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result, so judge progress with your prescriber rather than against someone else's.

09 · Everyday food questions

Pizza, biscuits, snacks and favourites

You can eat pizza on Mounjaro, because no food is banned. The sensible adjustment is portion size and frequency, since greasy, rich food is the kind many people feel worse after and a large slice sits heavily on a slower-emptying stomach.13 A smaller portion with salad often feels better than a full pizza.

The same logic applies to treats. You can eat biscuits on Mounjaro, but very sugary food leaves many people feeling worse and adds calories without protein. If you want them, enjoy a small portion slowly rather than eating from the packet.

For snacks, favour ones that carry protein or fibre: yoghurt, boiled eggs, fruit with nuts, vegetable sticks with hummus, or a small portion of cheese. They help you reach your protein target when meals are small.

Enjoying food on treatment means eating what you love in smaller amounts, eating slowly, and noticing when you are comfortably full. With a quieter appetite, flavour and quality matter more than quantity.

10 · Building your week

A simple way to plan your week

Plan around protein first, because it is the hardest requirement to meet when appetite drops. Choose a protein for each meal, then add vegetables and a fibre-rich carbohydrate.

  • Breakfast: eggs, Greek yoghurt with fruit, or porridge with a protein side.
  • Lunch: a salad or soup with chicken, tuna, beans or tofu.
  • Evening meal: fish, lean meat or lentils with plenty of vegetables and a modest portion of potatoes, rice or pasta.
  • Snacks: only if you are genuinely hungry, and protein-led.

On days when you feel unwell after injecting, keep food plain and light, and prioritise fluids. Do not worry about a perfect day; consistency across weeks matters more.

Treatment is reviewed regularly. At EverydayMeds, ongoing monthly reviews are included, and the prescribing team can talk through dose, side effects and eating patterns. Our free GLPTrackr companion app can help you log your journey.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What can you eat when you're on Mounjaro?
You can eat anything, because no food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Very fatty, fried or very sugary food makes many people feel worse, and large portions sit heavily, so smaller, slower meals work better. The aim is a sustainable calorie deficit alongside increased activity, not a perfect food list.
Can I eat pizza on Mounjaro?
Yes, no food is banned on Mounjaro. Pizza is rich and often greasy, and many people feel worse after very fatty food, while large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. A smaller portion eaten slowly, ideally with salad or a protein-rich topping, is usually more comfortable and fits better with a reduced-calorie diet.
What can I eat to settle my stomach on Mounjaro?
Choose plainer, lighter meals in smaller portions and eat slowly, avoiding very fatty, fried or very sugary food, which many people feel worse after. Keep sipping water through the day. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. You can report suspected side effects via the Yellow Card scheme.
How many meals per day on Mounjaro?
There is no set number of meals. The guidance is to include a protein source at every meal and keep portions smaller and slower, because the stomach empties more slowly. Some people do better with modest regular meals, others add a protein-led snack. Choose a pattern that meets your protein and fluid needs without discomfort.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Nothing is formally banned, but it helps to limit very fatty, fried or very sugary food, very large portions, high-calorie coffee drinks and alcohol. Alcohol can hit harder on an emptier stomach and adds calories, and it raises low blood sugar risk if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Avoid products marketed as natural GLP-1 boosters.
What snacks are good on Mounjaro?
Choose snacks that carry protein or fibre, such as yoghurt, boiled eggs, fruit with nuts, vegetable sticks with hummus or a small portion of cheese. They help you reach your protein goal when meals are small, which protects muscle. Only snack when genuinely hungry, and keep very sugary snacks as occasional small portions.
How can I maximise weight loss on Mounjaro?
Use it as licensed: alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Include protein at every meal, do resistance exercise two or more times a week, stay hydrated, and keep regular moderate activity such as brisk walking. Trial results are averages and individual results vary, so review progress with your prescriber.
Do I need vitamins on Mounjaro?
No supplement is required, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
