A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • There is no official Mounjaro diet and no banned food: build meals around protein, vegetables, fibre and fluids.
  • Smaller, slower meals work better because the stomach empties more slowly on treatment.
  • Include a protein source at every meal, even when appetite is low, and add resistance exercise to protect muscle.
  • Drink regularly. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away rather than pushing through.
  • A standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while eating less; no supplement is required.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What should you eat on Mounjaro?

Build each meal around protein, add vegetables and fibre, and keep fluids going through the day. That is the whole approach in one line, and it matches how the medicine works: it helps you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

There is no official "Mounjaro diet". No food is banned, including bananas, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective.1 Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food. Large portions also sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.13

Here is a practical plate. It is a pattern to adapt, not a prescription, and it fits any cuisine.

Part of the mealExamplesWhy it helps on Mounjaro
Protein (priority)Chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, lentils, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheeseSupports muscle while weight falls, and is harder to get enough of when appetite is low
Vegetables and fibreBroccoli, spinach, peppers, salad, beans, oatsAdds volume and fibre for little energy, and supports a calorie deficit
Wholegrain carbohydratesBrown rice, quinoa, oats, sweet potato, wholemeal breadSteady energy; keep portions modest as large portions sit heavily
FatsAvocado, olive oil, a small handful of nutsUseful in small amounts; many people feel worse after very fatty or fried food
FluidsWater, tea, coffee, sugar-free squashLess food means less fluid from food, so drink deliberately

For the other side of the picture, our overview of eating on treatment pulls the habits together.

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1

If you are already on treatment, adjust these habits as your dose changes. If you are still deciding, you can read about our weight loss clinic or see current pricing on the Mounjaro pen page, where the starting pen is £169.99 per month at standard price. Eating guidance is the same whichever route you use to access treatment, whether privately or through the NHS as access is phased in.

03 · Protein and muscle

How much protein should you eat on Mounjaro?

Include a protein source at every meal. For practical examples, see our guides on protein on treatment and daily protein planning.

Protein matters because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein, and resistance exercise.

This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls. A few ways to make protein easier when you do not feel like eating:

  • Start the meal with the protein, then add the rest if you are still hungry.
  • Choose soft, easy options such as eggs, yoghurt, fish or lentil soup on days when food feels heavy.
  • Keep ready-to-eat protein in the fridge so a small meal is never an effort.
  • Eat smaller portions more slowly rather than forcing a large plate.

04 · How much to eat

How much should you eat on Mounjaro?

Eat smaller portions than before and stop when you are comfortably satisfied. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list or an extreme restriction.1 Large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better.13

Should you eat when you are not hungry?

Yes, modestly, and with protein in mind. Reduced appetite is the intended effect of the medicine, but eating very little makes it harder to protect muscle and can leave gaps in nutrition. Rather than forcing a full plate, have a small, protein-containing meal at roughly regular times. If you are eating very little for a prolonged period, or you feel unwell, talk to your clinical team.

That is also why a daily multivitamin can be a sensible safety net.

05 · Foods to limit

What should you limit on Mounjaro?

Limit very fatty, fried and very sugary foods, and very large meals, because these are the choices many people feel worse after.13 Nothing is forbidden, so this is about comfort and calories, not rules.1

Common questionHonest answer
Can I eat bananas?Yes. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas.
What happens if I eat chocolate? It is not banned. A large amount of very sugary food may feel unpleasant and adds calories that work against your goals, so a small portion eaten slowly is the realistic approach.
Is fried food off limits? Not banned, but many people feel worse after very fatty or fried meals.
Do I need to avoid carbohydrates? No. Choose wholegrain options and keep portions modest.

For more on foods to limit, see what to avoid on treatment.

06 · Fluids, coffee and alcohol

What should you drink on Mounjaro?

Drink water regularly through the day. Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual: reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class of medicine.13 Keep water within reach, and if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

Coffee and tea

There is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. "Coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.

Alcohol

There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule, and many people find their desire for alcohol drops on treatment.

07 · Exercise and results

How to get the most from Mounjaro

Combine these eating habits with regular activity, because increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle.1 Start where you are and build. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

For realistic expectations, here is what the main trial reported. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

There is no trick to speeding this up. The reliable levers are protein, fluids, resistance exercise and consistency with your plan and reviews. Be wary of any dramatic weight-loss claims tied to a special food or drink.

08 · Vitamins and supplements

Do you need vitamins or supplements?

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.1 Our guide to vitamins on treatment goes into more detail.

Be cautious about products marketed as "natural GLP-1 boosters". They are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. These are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.

09 · Eating through titration

How eating changes as your dose rises

Appetite usually falls further as the dose rises, so protein planning matters more over time, not less.1 Many people start on the lowest strength, and our guide on how long to stay on the starter dose explains how your prescriber decides when to step up.

A few habits help at every stage:

  • Plan your protein before the week begins, so low-appetite days do not derail you.
  • Eat slowly and stop when satisfied, since the stomach empties more slowly on treatment.
  • Notice which foods leave you feeling unwell and swap them out without guilt.
  • Keep a simple log. Our free GLPTrackr companion app lets you track your journey on iOS and Android.

If you have severe, persistent stomach pain, get medical help straight away; if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. You can also report side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our prescribing team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support, so you are not left to work it out alone.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What should I be eating on Mounjaro?
Build meals around protein, vegetables and fibre, drink regularly, and keep portions smaller and slower than usual. No food is banned on Mounjaro, but very fatty, fried or very sugary food often feels worse. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so aim for a sustainable deficit rather than a perfect food list.
How much should you eat while on Mounjaro?
Eat smaller portions than before and stop when comfortably satisfied. Large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly on treatment. The right total depends on your size, activity and goal, so ask your prescriber or a dietitian for a personal target rather than relying on a generic figure.
Should you eat on Mounjaro when not hungry?
Yes, modestly. Reduced appetite is expected, but eating very little makes it harder to protect muscle. Aim for a small meal with a protein source at regular times rather than forcing a large plate. If you are eating very little for a prolonged period or feel unwell, contact your clinical team.
What not to eat on Mounjaro?
No food is banned, including bananas. However, many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily. Alcohol adds calories and can hit harder on an emptier stomach. Limit these choices for comfort and to protect your calorie deficit, rather than treating them as forbidden.
What happens if I eat chocolate on Mounjaro?
Nothing dangerous is expected, because no food is banned on Mounjaro. A large amount of very sugary food may feel unpleasant and adds calories that work against your goals. A small portion eaten slowly is the realistic approach, ideally after a meal containing protein rather than instead of one.
Can I eat bananas while taking Mounjaro?
Yes. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas. The useful principles are to prioritise protein at each meal, include vegetables and fibre, drink regularly, and keep portions smaller and slower. A banana can fit comfortably into that pattern, for example alongside yoghurt or eggs.
Can you drink alcohol on Mounjaro?
There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule.
How can I maximise weight loss on Mounjaro?
Use the medicine as licensed: alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Prioritise protein at each meal, add resistance exercise to protect muscle, keep well hydrated and attend your reviews. Trial results are averages and individual results vary, so consistency matters more than any special food or trick.
Do I need vitamins on Mounjaro?
No supplement is required, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Products sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
