How Much Protein Should You Eat Daily on Mounjaro? (October 2026)

There is no single gram figure that suits everyone on Mounjaro. The practical advice is to include a protein source at every meal and do resistance exercise two or more times a week to protect muscle.1 Your own daily target depends on your size, activity and health, so a prescriber or dietitian should set it. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro guidance is to include a protein source at every meal, not to hit one universal gram number.
  • Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, so protein and resistance exercise matter more as appetite falls.
  • Small, regular protein-led meals work better than large portions, because the stomach empties more slowly.
  • Keep fluids up: reduced appetite means less water from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly.
  • If you cannot eat enough or keep fluids down, contact your clinical team rather than pushing through.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

How much protein do you need on Mounjaro?

The honest answer is that it depends on you. The advice is clear: aim to include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low.1 Think of protein as the first thing on the plate, not an afterthought once you have eaten vegetables and carbohydrates.

You will see precise gram targets on forums and social media. Those are usually one person's rule of thumb, not a licensed recommendation. If you want a personal target, a registered dietitian can calculate one from your height, weight, activity and any health conditions. Our other guides take different angles on the same question, such as protein in grams on Mounjaro and daily protein planning.

02 · What to do next

The two decisions you actually face

The first decision is whether protein is relevant to you right now. If you are on treatment, or considering it, the answer is yes. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.1 This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.

The second decision is how to make it happen when you are rarely hungry. The practical answer is small, protein-led meals at regular times, plus resistance work. If you are still deciding whether treatment is right for you, our weight loss clinic page explains the options, and the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices.

03 · Why protein matters

Why protein matters when appetite drops

Protein matters on Mounjaro because it helps you lose fat rather than lean tissue. Mounjaro works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.11 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That is the aim, but it carries a side effect for nutrition. When you eat less overall, protein is often the first thing to slip, because it is filling and takes more chewing than a biscuit or a bowl of cereal. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so the goal is a sustainable deficit that still feeds your muscles.1

Trial results show what treatment can do alongside diet and exercise. In SURMOUNT-1, people lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2 A large loss makes muscle protection more important, not less.

04 · Building protein into meals

How to get enough protein when you are rarely hungry

The most reliable method is to start each meal with the protein food and eat the rest afterwards. If you fill up halfway through, you will have eaten the part that matters most.

No food is banned on Mounjaro. Some choices make treatment easier, though. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better.1

  • Eggs, fish and chicken: soft, easy to eat in small portions and quick to prepare.
  • Greek yoghurt and cottage cheese: useful when solid food feels like too much.
  • Tofu, lentils and beans: good plant options and often described as "poor man's protein" because they are cheap and filling.
  • Lean cuts of meat: less greasy, so less likely to trigger nausea on a slow-emptying stomach.
  • Milk-based drinks and soups: a gentler route on days when appetite is lowest.

Spread protein across the day rather than loading it into one sitting.

05 · High-protein breakfast ideas

What is a high-protein breakfast on Mounjaro?

A high-protein breakfast is one built around a protein food rather than toast or cereal alone. Morning appetite is often the weakest on treatment, so a small, easy option is more realistic than a large cooked plate.

  • Eggs, scrambled or boiled, with a slice of wholegrain toast.
  • Greek yoghurt with berries and a few nuts.
  • Cottage cheese on rye or oatcakes.
  • Smoked salmon with a little avocado.
  • A protein-rich smoothie made with milk or yoghurt, if solid food is unappealing.

Eggs are the simplest place to start, but how many make a meal depends on their size and what else you add. Pair them with another protein food rather than relying on a large number of eggs. On injection days with early side effects, keep the meal plain and low in fat.

No whole food is entirely protein. Powders and shakes are the most concentrated sources, but they are not required. A food-first approach is usually easier to sustain and more satisfying. If you do use a shake, check its calories, because drinks can quietly erode your deficit.

06 · Resistance exercise

Protein works best with resistance exercise

Protein alone will not protect muscle; resistance exercise is the second lever. The two levers are adequate protein and resistance exercise two or more times a week.1 That could be weights, bands, bodyweight work or a class, whatever you will keep doing.

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle. Start where you are and build. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

If you are trying to get the most from treatment, this pairing is the answer to "how do I maximise weight loss on Mounjaro?". Take the medicine as prescribed, eat a sustainable reduced-calorie diet with protein at each meal, keep fluids up, move regularly and lift. There is no hidden trick beyond that, and claims of one should be treated with suspicion.

07 · Too little or too much

What happens if you eat too little or too much protein

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, so eating too little protein can affect your strength and metabolism.1

Is there such a thing as too much? The sensible position is to avoid extreme targets and large single servings, especially because big portions sit heavily when the stomach empties slowly. Very high-protein plans may not suit everyone. Anyone with an existing medical condition should check with their prescriber or GP before making large dietary changes.

Very high daily gram targets circulate online, but they are not a licensed recommendation. Chasing them can lead to forcing down food you do not want, which tends to backfire. Steady, regular protein at each meal is a better habit.

08 · Fluids and supplements

Fluids, vitamins and protein supplements

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1 Keep water within reach through the day. Treat inability to keep fluids down as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through. Our guide on daily water intake on Mounjaro goes into more detail.

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Supplements sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.1

Coffee and tea are fine, but strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak.

09 · When to ask for help

When to ask for personal advice

Get medical help straight away if you cannot eat enough at all, cannot keep fluids down, or feel your food intake has dropped sharply as the dose has risen — dehydration needs medical help straight away. These are situations where your treating team can help. Our ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support exist for this.

If you are on other medicines, such as insulin or a sulfonylurea, eating much less can matter for your blood sugar, and doses may need adjusting. Raise it with your prescriber rather than changing anything yourself.13

A registered dietitian can turn the general guidance here into a personal plan. Our related guides, including protein while on GLP-1 treatment, daily protein needs and protein amounts to aim for, explore the question from other directions.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What happens if I don't eat enough protein on Mounjaro?
Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and too little protein increases the risk of losing muscle rather than fat. Protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. Include a protein source at every meal and do resistance exercise two or more times a week. If appetite is very low, ask your prescriber or a dietitian for advice.
Is a very high protein target needed for weight loss on Mounjaro?
No licensed recommendation sets a very high target. The advice is to include a protein source at every meal and to do resistance exercise regularly. Extreme gram figures seen online are not part of that guidance. For a personal number based on your size and health, ask a registered dietitian rather than following a social media rule.
How can I maximise weight loss on Mounjaro?
Use treatment as prescribed alongside a sustainable reduced-calorie diet and increased activity. Put protein at every meal, add vegetables and fibre, keep fluids up, walk regularly and do resistance work two or more times a week. Trial results are averages and individual results vary, so there is no trick that replaces these basics.
What are the signs of eating too much protein?
On Mounjaro, very large portions can feel heavy because the stomach empties more slowly. If a diet change makes you feel unwell, or you have an existing medical condition, speak to your prescriber, GP or a dietitian before continuing.
How many eggs make a high-protein meal?
It depends on egg size, your appetite and what else you eat. Rather than counting eggs, build the meal around a protein food and pair it with another, such as yoghurt, fish or beans. Small, regular, protein-led meals suit the slower stomach emptying that Mounjaro causes better than one very large serving.
What food is almost pure protein?
No whole food is entirely protein. Protein powders are the most concentrated sources, but they are not required on Mounjaro. Eggs, fish, chicken, lean meat, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, lentils and beans all supply useful protein alongside other nutrients. A food-first approach is usually easier to sustain.
What is poor man's protein?
It usually means cheap, filling plant-based and everyday foods such as beans, lentils, eggs and tofu. They can be a practical way to include protein at every meal on Mounjaro. Choose smaller, slower portions, and check how well your stomach tolerates high-fibre foods, since a slower-emptying stomach can make large servings uncomfortable.
What is the highest-protein breakfast on Mounjaro?
Pick a breakfast built around a protein food: eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese or smoked fish. Morning appetite is often low on treatment, so keep it small and plain, especially on injection days with early side effects. A smoothie made with milk or yoghurt can help if solid food is unappealing.
