What to take instead of weight loss injections

If you want to avoid needles, the realistic licensed choices are a GLP-1 tablet or orlistat. Two GLP-1 tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets, approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo, approved in August 2026. Both are prescription-only and have their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results.2021

Do not compare the tablet and injection trial numbers as if they were head to head. SURMOUNT-5, the first large head-to-head trial, compared tirzepatide with semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy): 20.2% versus 13.7% average weight loss over 72 weeks.15

How to choose

Start with why you want to avoid injections. If it is needle worry, tablets are worth discussing. 03 · Supplements and shortcuts

Supplements and "natural GLP-1" products

"Natural GLP-1" products such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for weight loss and have no comparable trial evidence. Beware of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, or of dramatic weight-loss claims. Unlicensed "research" peptides, compounded copies and stacking GLP-1 medicines have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.7

04 · Injections and the NHS

The NHS route

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than wait.

05 · Switching and stopping

Switching between medicines

There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide. Switching happens under prescriber supervision, usually with the previous medicine stopped and a washout interval observed. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together. After a final Mounjaro dose, tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.1 Compare Wegovy with Mounjaro.

Which is safer, Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Both are effective, licensed treatments, and neither is simply safer. Which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone. With Mounjaro, seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. In SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide averaged 20.2% weight loss versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg over 72 weeks; individual results vary.15
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The phrase is used for supplements such as berberine, marketed as "natural GLP-1". They are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. They are not an established substitute for licensed treatment, and dosing is not standardised. Ozempic itself is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss.
Why are people stopping Wegovy?
A prescriber can review tolerance, response and personal preference if you are thinking about stopping or changing treatment. There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide; switching is done under prescriber supervision, and you must never run two GLP-1 medicines together.
Is there an over-the-counter alternative to Mounjaro?
