A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Private eligibility: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition.
  • NHS criteria are tighter (BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition) and are being phased in, highest-need groups first.
  • Some ethnic backgrounds use lower BMI thresholds, because health risks start at a lower BMI.
  • Eligibility on paper is not the final word: a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your history and medicines before anything is supplied.
  • Pregnancy, trying to conceive and allergy to tirzepatide rule Mounjaro out.

01 · The core answer

Who is eligible for weight loss injections in the UK?

Adults are eligible for Mounjaro for weight management when their BMI and health history fit the licence. The licence is the same wherever you are treated; what differs is how quickly each route can reach you.

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.11

Meeting a BMI number makes you a candidate. It does not make the injection automatically right for you.

RouteBMI and conditionsWho decidesPractical picture

Lower thresholds for some ethnic backgroundsClinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m²Your prescriber or GPApplies to people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds

The private route covers a wider group than the NHS does today. The NHS route costs you nothing at the point of use, apart from any usual prescription charge, but waiting time depends on where you live and which group you fall into.

02 · Your next step

What should you do if you think you qualify?

Work out your BMI, list your health conditions and medicines, and then decide between asking your GP and having a private consultation. Our online eligibility check walks you through the same questions a prescriber asks.

If you choose a private route, our consultation is free and has no obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. You can read about the Mounjaro pen and its prices before you start: the first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and prices were checked 24 October 2026.

03 · BMI and conditions

How BMI and weight-related conditions decide eligibility

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared, and it is the first filter for weight loss injection eligibility. It is a screening number, not a diagnosis, and a prescriber reads it alongside everything else you tell them.

There are two licensed pathways. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1

So a BMI of 30 or above can be enough by itself. In the lower band, from 27 up to 30, you need at least one of those conditions. Your prescriber will want to know whether the condition has been diagnosed, how it is managed and which medicines you take for it.

If your BMI is below 27, you do not fit the licensed criteria for weight management, whatever the reason you are looking for a weight loss jab. Our consultation will not approve an order that falls outside the licence.

Always use an honest, recent weight and height. An accurate BMI protects you, because the prescriber's decision rests on it.

04 · Ethnic background adjustment

Lower BMI thresholds for some ethnic backgrounds

Some groups are assessed at a lower BMI, because weight-related health problems appear at a lower BMI in these populations. People from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds are at higher risk of weight- related health problems at a lower BMI, so clinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for these groups.4

You do not need to do the sums yourself. Tell the prescriber or your GP your ethnic background during the assessment so the right threshold is applied.

This adjustment exists to make assessment fairer, not to relax safety checks. Everything else, including your history and medicines, is still reviewed in the same way.

05 · The NHS route

Who qualifies for weight loss injections on the NHS?

NHS eligibility is narrower than the licence, and availability depends on the rollout stage. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6

If you want to try the NHS first, book a conversation with your GP. Bring your BMI, a list of your conditions and your current medicines. Ask whether you fall into a group being offered treatment now and how the local service handles referrals.

The NHS route can be slower, and it is clinical need that sets the order. That is not a judgement on you; it is how a phased rollout is designed to work. For more detail, our guide to weight loss drugs and NHS eligibility goes further.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

06 · Who should not take it

Who should not take Mounjaro, even with the right BMI

A qualifying BMI does not override a safety reason not to treat. Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.1

Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.13

There is also a thyroid precaution. In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours; it is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials.1 As a precaution, tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2; they will weigh this in your assessment.1 Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.1 If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Stop Mounjaro at least one month before trying to conceive.

If a condition on this list applies to you, do not assume you are ruled out. Some call for extra caution rather than a flat no, and the prescriber is the right person to weigh that. Be open and complete when you answer the questionnaire, because an honest answer is the only kind that keeps you safe.

07 · What the consultation covers

What happens in an eligibility consultation

The consultation is a short health questionnaire reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is free with no obligation. The prescriber looks at your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether treatment is suitable.11

You can expect questions on the following:

  • Your height and weight, so BMI can be calculated.
  • Weight-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
  • Past conditions that call for caution, including pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, gut disease and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Pregnancy, plans to conceive and any family history of thyroid cancer.
  • Every medicine you take, prescription or not.

If the prescriber approves the order, it is dispensed by our registered pharmacy (GPhC 9012878). Delivery is free, next-day, tracked and temperature-controlled, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. If the order is not suitable, you are refunded automatically in full.

Repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing ships automatically. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments are carried out by the prescribing team, with side-effect support when you need it. If you take the contraceptive pill, Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well it is absorbed: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

08 · Eligible does not mean instant results

Being eligible is the start, not the result

Qualifying for treatment says nothing about how quickly you will lose weight, and honest expectations are part of being a good candidate. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1

Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.2 Treatment response is reviewed by your prescriber: if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1

Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1 The injection also works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. If you are not ready to change eating and activity habits, say so in the consultation. The prescriber can talk it through with you.

Individual results vary, and trial averages do not predict your own result. The BMI and eligibility guide on our blog covers the same ground with more worked examples.

09 · Other injections

Eligibility for other weight loss injections

Each weight loss injection has its own product information, so eligibility is set by that medicine's licence and by your prescriber's judgement.

Wegovy (semaglutide) is also once weekly. Its pens run 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least four weeks.18 Liraglutide products, such as Saxenda, are supplied at 6mg/ml and are a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Whichever you choose, a prescriber assesses your suitability first, and you should not use any weight loss injection offered without a consultation or prescription.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Who qualifies for weight loss injections on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Access is being phased in over several years, so ask your GP where you fall.
Who is eligible for NHS weight loss injections in 2026?
Eligibility follows the phased rollout. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, with the highest-need groups first. The NICE recommendation covers adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. Your GP can tell you whether your local service is offering treatment to your group yet.
What conditions qualify you for weight loss medication?
For Mounjaro, a BMI of 30 or above can qualify you on its own. Between 27 and 30, you need at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. A prescriber then reviews your history and medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.
Will my GP prescribe me weight loss injections?
It depends on whether you fall within the NHS rollout group being treated now and how your local service is set up. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition, with access phased in over years. If your GP cannot prescribe yet, regulated private treatment is another route.
Who is eligible for free NHS weight loss injections?
Adults who meet the NICE criteria and fall into a group the rollout has reached. That means a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, with the highest-need groups first. Wegovy access runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP. Eligibility alone does not set the timing, as that depends on the phased rollout.
How much does Mounjaro cost across UK pharmacies?
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £319.99 per month depending on dose and provider, checked 24 October 2026. The gap between providers for the same dose varies from £20 to £36.03. Compare the same dose, and check you are buying from a registered pharmacy on the GPhC register.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
How quickly does Mounjaro work?
Gradually, by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Some people notice appetite change in week one, others little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month, so judge by trend rather than individual weigh-ins.
