01 · Decision guide
What Q1 2025 growth means for you if you are choosing treatment now
Market growth statistics do not change whether a treatment suits you, but they explain why access and pricing look different today.
If you want the numbers behind the market story, our guides on GLP-1 prescription growth through 2025 and the Q1 2025 prescription forecast look at it from the forecasting side.
For the person deciding what to do, three questions matter more than the market total. Are you eligible under the licence? Is NHS access realistic for you, or do you prefer a regulated private route? And what will it cost over a year, not just for the first pen?
02 · Cost and access
What treatment costs and how to get it
The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starter at our standard price, with all six doses in stock. A new customer's first order is £40 off at any dose with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Your first 2.5mg pen therefore costs £129.99 with the first-order code.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens on our index were £143.96 and £339.00 when we checked on 10 October 2026. Starting pens ranged from £143.96 to £179.99. The gap between providers for the same dose was between £27 and £41. Comparing the same dose across providers is worth doing before you commit.
| Stage | Pens | Standard-price cost |
|---|---|---|
| First year, settling at 5mg (52 weeks) | 13 | £2,711.88 |
| First year, settling at 15mg (52 weeks) | 13 | £3,599.88 |
These totals are at standard prices before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less than the standard price. For a maintenance dose between those two, use that dose's monthly price: £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg or £319.99 at 12.5mg.
03 · How to order
How ordering works with us
Ordering takes three steps, and the consultation is free with no obligation. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.
- Free online consultation. Complete a short health questionnaire. It costs nothing, and you can start your free consultation whenever you are ready.
- Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Dispensing and delivery. Our registered pharmacy dispenses your order, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Delivery is free, next-day, tracked and in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. You can read more on our Mounjaro ordering page, or compare options in all weight loss treatments. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping.
04 · Q1 2025 data gap
How to read a Q1 2025 prescription figure
Quoted prescription figures differ for several reasons, and each one can move a headline growth number. Some datasets count only NHS primary-care prescriptions. Some count private supply as well, while others count only pharmacy dispensing. Some track every GLP-1 product, including diabetes medicines, while others isolate weight management. A quarter-on-quarter rise can also reflect a change in how a medicine is recorded rather than a change in how many people take it.
If you are researching the market, ask four questions of any figure. Which medicines does it include? Does it cover NHS, private or both? Which dates does it cover, and is it a count of prescriptions or of people? A figure that cannot answer these is not safe to cite.
Our related guides take different angles on the same topic. Our look at the number of weight loss drug prescriptions at the end of Q3 2024 sets the earlier baseline, and a separate guide asks whether GLP-1 prescriptions would rise in Q1 2025. Read them as context rather than as audited totals.
Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 NHS access is being phased in over several years, with the primary-care rollout starting in June 2025.6 Those facts shape demand more reliably than any single quarterly count.
05 · What changed in 2025
What changed in UK weight-loss treatment in 2025
Two dated events defined 2025 for UK weight-loss treatment: the start of the NHS primary-care rollout in June 2025 and a UK list-price increase for Mounjaro from 1 September 2025. Neither is a prescription count, but both affect who can get treatment and what it costs.
The first is the NHS rollout. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years. Because the rollout began in June, it falls after Q1 2025, so it cannot explain Q1 growth. It does explain why interest rose later in the year.
The second is the price change. Eli Lilly announced on 14 August 2025 a UK list-price increase for Mounjaro, effective 1 September 2025. Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts, so the list price is not what every provider charges.
This matters for anyone reading older growth commentary. Any article describing Mounjaro costs from before September 2025 is describing a different market. As of October 2026, the 2.5mg pen is £169.99 at standard price and the 15mg pen is £329.99.
If you are weighing whether the rollout or the price change affects you, the practical test is simple. Check whether you meet the NHS criteria and whether your area is offering appointments. If not, a regulated private route is a reasonable alternative. Our Mounjaro pen page shows today's prices for each dose, with all six doses in stock.
Neither event tells you how many prescriptions were written in any given quarter. Treat claims that connect them to a specific Q1 number with caution.
06 · Why demand grew
Why GLP-1 treatment became so widely discussed
Interest in these medicines grew because trial results were large by the standards of earlier weight-loss drugs, and because treatment is a once-weekly injection rather than a daily regimen. The clinical reasons are in the trial results.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
The trial also reported how many people reached particular thresholds. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
To put the percentage in concrete terms, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is a worked example of the average, not a prediction for any individual, and it should not be read as how quickly weight comes off.
The mechanism helps explain why people find it different. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Treatment is stepped up gradually under prescriber review rather than started at a high dose.
07 · Eligibility
Who can be prescribed Mounjaro for weight loss
Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1
It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.11 Meeting the BMI threshold is necessary but not sufficient, because suitability depends on the whole picture.
The licensed criteria and the NHS criteria are different. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.46 So some adults who meet the licence do not yet meet NHS criteria, or may not have been reached yet in the phased rollout.
That gap is the main reason many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. It is a personal decision, and it makes sense to ask your GP about NHS options first if you are close to the thresholds.
If you choose a private route, look for these markers of a properly regulated service:
- A consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
- A pharmacy you can find on the GPhC register. Ours is registration 9012878.
- Genuine branded pens supplied through official channels.
- Follow-up reviews, not a one-off sale.
Our consultation is free and without obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
If you do not meet the criteria, that is a legitimate clinical outcome. A prescriber's job includes saying no when treatment is not suitable.
08 · NHS versus private
NHS or private: the honest picture
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. Which route suits you depends on your BMI, your conditions and how long you are willing to wait.6
On the NHS side, NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.4 Full rollout is expected to take years. You can read the national position in the NHS guide to tirzepatide.5
The NHS charge for a prescription in England is £9.90, but that applies to items dispensed on an NHS prescription. It does not apply to private supply. If your GP can prescribe it on the NHS and you qualify, that is a sound route, and you should ask.
On the private side, you are paying for the medicine and the clinical service. The benefits are speed and a licence-based eligibility threshold that is broader than the current NHS one. The costs are real, and they continue for as long as you remain on treatment.
| Factor | NHS | Private (regulated) |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Narrower, phased; highest-need groups first | Licensed criteria: BMI 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition |
| Wait | Depends on local rollout | Prescriber review after a free consultation |
| Cost to you | NHS prescription charge may apply | Pen price each month; see £169.99 at 2.5mg |
| Follow-up | Through NHS services | Monthly reviews included with us |
Neither route is the "correct" one for everyone. A sensible approach is to check your NHS eligibility, ask your GP about local availability and compare private options only if the NHS route is unavailable or too slow for you.
If you go private, choose a provider that treats the consultation as a clinical assessment. Our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
09 · Newer medicines
The newest weight loss drugs: what is licensed and what is not
The newest weight loss drugs in UK product information are Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron) tablets. All three have a UK summary of product characteristics.12021
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection that activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. It is the first treatment of its kind to do so, and it differs from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1
Wegovy is semaglutide. The injection comes as pens of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly. Dose steps up after at least 4 weeks and reaches the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 A tablet form of Wegovy also has UK product information.20 See current Wegovy tablet prices on our weight loss treatments page.
Foundayo contains orforglipron, a tablet taken orally. Its trial results should not be set against those of Mounjaro, because different trials in different populations are not head to head. SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss.15
For a person choosing between them, the practical differences are the form (weekly injection or tablet), the dosing schedule and the cost. Your prescriber can discuss which fits your health and preferences.
Older drugs belong in the story too. Our background guides on the fen-phen weight loss drug and the Belviq weight loss drug show why modern licensing and safety review matter. For another development area, see our explainer on the Moderna weight loss drug question.
Medicines still in development or not licensed in the UK should not be bought online. Anyone offering to supply them without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign.
10 · Coming in 2026
What weight loss drugs are coming in 2026?
Medicines become available in the UK once they receive a licence and a UK product information entry. The most reliable places to check are the electronic medicines compendium, the MHRA and NICE. If a website says a new weight-loss injection is available "now" but you cannot find it on those sources, treat it as unverified.
The same rule applies to generic or look-alike products. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected side effects or problem products.719 If something looks wrong with a pen you received, report it.
Four warning signs apply to any weight-loss medicine sold online:
- The seller offers to supply without a consultation or prescription.
- The seller promises specific results or dramatic weight-loss claims.
- The pharmacy cannot be found on the GPhC register.
- The price is far below the others you see, and the pens are not clearly sourced.
For now, the practical position is that licensed options in the UK include Mounjaro, Wegovy and the tablet forms covered by their product information. If a newer option matters to you, ask your prescriber at review whether it has become suitable for you.
Meanwhile, you do not need to wait for something new to start a sensible conversation. Treatment decisions are about your health, your goals and what is available and licensed today.
11 · Wegovy and Ozempic
Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro compared
Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, so the real comparison is between two different active ingredients. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. Which suits you depends on your health, your goals and your prescriber's judgement.
Mechanism is the clearest difference. Tirzepatide activates two receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1 Both are once-weekly injections. Liraglutide products such as Saxenda are a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre.
On efficacy, SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss.15 If you want the detail, read the SURMOUNT-5 paper directly.
Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg and moves through 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg under prescriber review.
Wegovy's 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management. Ask your prescriber about the product licensed for your reason for treatment.
On price, Wegovy's first pen is £99.99 as a first-order price. Our first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen is £129.99 as a first-order price with code FIRST40.
A fair summary is that both are effective licensed treatments. Choice is driven by suitability, tolerance, preference for dosing and cost. If you already take one and wonder about switching, discuss it with your prescriber instead of changing yourself.
12 · Stopping treatment
Why people stop and how long treatment lasts
For Wegovy, the dose steps up after at least 4 weeks and reaches the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17. That is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18 How long you then stay on it is a decision for you and your prescriber, based on your response and health.
For Mounjaro, there is a practical point about stopping. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
Reasons someone might pause or stop are individual, and they are worth raising openly at review. Common themes include tolerability, cost, a change in health or a change in goals. If you experience a new or worrying symptom, tell your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. Severe, persistent stomach pain, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing need medical help straight away.19
Stretching or spacing out doses to save money is unlicensed; talk to your clinical team rather than self-adjusting.
For Mounjaro, most side effects are digestive: the most common — affecting more than 1 in 10 people — are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort, and they are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose.13
Our aftercare is built for these decisions: ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration, follow-up assessments and side-effect support from the prescribing team. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically.
13 · Year-cost planning
Planning the cost of a year of treatment
A first year of Mounjaro costs £2,711.88 at standard prices if you settle at 5mg, and up to £3,599.88 if you settle at 15mg, before any discounts. Those totals cover 52 weeks, which is 13 pens.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. That is four pens. Your monthly cost then depends on the dose your prescriber settles you on.
Discounts reduce these figures. A new customer's first order is £40 off at any dose with code FIRST40, including people switching to us from another provider at a higher dose. If you are switching at 15mg, your first order is £289.99. Every later order carries an automatic £25 reorder discount (code DOSE25) off the standard price.
| Dose | Standard price per 4-week pen | Weekly equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5mg | £279.99 | £70.00 |
| 10mg | £290.99 | £72.75 |
| 12.5mg | £319.99 | £80.00 |
Your prescriber matches the dose to your response and tolerability.
Payment options are designed to spread the cost: Visa and Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions. There is no subscription lock-in.
Always plan with current figures. You can see today's prices, checked 10 October 2026, on the Mounjaro product page.
Before you commit, compare like for like. Check the dose, the pen type, whether the consultation is free, whether delivery is included and whether reviews are part of the service. A low headline price that excludes these is not directly comparable.
14 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
