What Mounjaro costs now after the price rise

Mounjaro now costs £169.99 for the 2.5mg starter pen at our standard price, rising by dose to £299.99 for 15mg. Each pen lasts four weeks. These are standard prices before any discount, and they are checked 24 October 2026. You can see every strength on the Mounjaro pen page with live prices.

The price you see is the price you pay. The consultation is free and there are no hidden fees. 03 · What Lilly changed

What Eli Lilly changed and when

Eli Lilly announced the UK list-price increase for Mounjaro on 14 August 2025, effective 1 September 2025. The announcement came in a company statement that also covered its wider investment plans.¹⁰ The list price is the price Lilly sets for the medicine before pharmacies apply their own commercial terms.

List prices rose from £92–£122 per month to £133–£330 per month, depending on dose. That is an increase of up to 170% on the highest dose.¹⁰ The percentage differs by strength, which is why a single headline number can mislead. A smaller rise at the starting dose and a much larger rise at the top of the range are both described by the same announcement.

It helps to separate three things people often blend together. The first is the list price, set by the manufacturer. The second is what a pharmacy pays after confidential discounts, which are not published. The third is what you pay, which includes the pharmacy's own pricing decisions. Only the first is public, so two pharmacies can price the same pen differently after the same list-price change.

The rise applies to private and self-funded prescribing. That is the route used by many people who meet the licensed criteria but are not yet reached by the NHS rollout. If you were already on treatment when the change took effect, your next pen was priced under the new structure, which is why many people noticed it at reorder. 04 · Why prices rose

Why the price went up

Eli Lilly's statement set out the increase as part of an agreement to raise the UK list price of Mounjaro.¹⁰

For a patient deciding what to do, the reason matters less than the practical effect. The new list prices are in place. Pharmacies set their own prices within them, so shopping around for the same dose is worthwhile. Check that every provider you compare is a registered pharmacy and that the price includes consultation, delivery and prescribing, so you are comparing the same thing.

It also helps to know what the rise does not change. It does not alter what the medicine is, how it is licensed, or how it is used. Mounjaro remains a prescription-only medicine, supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Beware anyone who uses the price rise as a reason to offer a shortcut. Sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription are not a cheaper version of the same service. They are outside the regulated system, which puts your safety at risk.

05 · A year of cost

What a year of Mounjaro costs after the rise

A first year costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices before discounts. A year here means 52 weeks, which is 13 four-week pens. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg, your first four pens cost £879.96 at standard prices. Treatment starts on the 2.5mg pen and doses are stepped up under prescriber guidance; your prescriber decides the pace and the dose that suits you. The licensed strengths are 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

If you settle at a maintenance dose between those totals, the monthly figure is the simplest guide: £244.99 for 7.5mg, £274.99 for 10mg and £289.99 for 12.5mg at standard prices.

Planning tips that stay inside the licence:

• Remember that more medicine is not automatically better. The right dose is the one your prescriber judges suitable.
• Use pay-monthly or Klarna options if spreading cost helps, with no subscription lock-in.

Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically. That means you control when each pen is ordered and can pause if your circumstances change. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your pen.¹³

06 · NHS or private

NHS or private after the price rise

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. The private price rise matters to this group in particular, because they pay for treatment themselves.

The first step is to find out where you stand. If you think you may qualify for NHS treatment, ask your GP about local access. The NHS guide to tirzepatide explains the medicine and how it is used.⁵ If you do not yet fit the early rollout groups, or the wait is longer than you want, private treatment is an option.

Private treatment is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹ A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.

The two routes are not mutually exclusive in time. Some people start privately and later move to NHS care if they become eligible, and your prescriber can help you plan that transition. Nothing in the price rise changes your clinical eligibility. It only changes the cost of the private route.

One caution: do not assume that the private price is a measure of quality. A genuine pen from a registered pharmacy is the same medicine whichever route supplied it. Cutting cost by going to an unregistered seller is the one saving that carries serious risk.

07 · Cutting cost safely

Ways to manage cost safely

The safe ways to manage cost are to compare the same dose across registered pharmacies and use the discounts available. They all stay inside the licence, and none of them put your health at risk.

In SURMOUNT-1, which included 2,539 adults, people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.²

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg and 20.9% is about 21 kg. They do not predict your own result, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

08 · Counterfeit risk

Counterfeit risk when prices rise

Higher prices make fake pens more tempting, and fake pens are dangerous. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.⁷

Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.¹² Our registration number is 9012878, and you can check it directly on the GPhC register entry. Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is outside the regulated system, however attractive the price looks.

Know what a good pen looks like. A genuine UK pen comes from a registered pharmacy with a batch number and expiry date, arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless. Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, or has been above 30°C or in use for more than 30 days. If supply or packaging ever seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the GPhC register and contact the pharmacy before injecting.¹³

If you have a side effect or suspect a falsified pen, report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.⁷ Reporting helps regulators act, and it protects other patients.

The honest calculation is simple. A pen priced far below what registered pharmacies charge for the same dose has either been obtained from somewhere unusual or is not what it claims. Savings of a few pounds are not worth the risk of injecting an unknown product. If the rise has put treatment out of reach, talk to a prescriber about options instead.

09 · Alternatives and mechanism

Alternatives to consider if the price is a problem

The main regulated alternative is another licensed weight management medicine chosen with a prescriber, rather than a shortcut. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection with a dose ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after 4 weeks on each dose and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.¹⁸ Your first Wegovy pen costs £99.99 with us, and you can see current Wegovy and tablet prices on our weight loss treatments page.

Mounjaro works differently from single-action GLP-1 medicines. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹ That dual action is what distinguishes it from semaglutide, though the choice between them should be made with a prescriber on suitability, not on price alone.

Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in other products, is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. For other medicines, figures vary, so your prescriber can advise on what is suitable.

What about low-cost supplements marketed as natural versions of these injections? They are available cheaply without assessment, but they have no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardised, and dramatic weight-loss claims in their marketing are not an established effect of the product. A nickname like "poor man's Ozempic" is marketing, not a licensed treatment. If you feel drawn to one, discuss it with a pharmacist or prescriber first, particularly if you take other medicines.

Remember that switching also has cost. A prescriber will assess your history and current medicines before recommending any change. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.¹ Plan any switch with your clinical team so there is no gap in oversight.

Mounjaro itself is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and is made by Eli Lilly.
