A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Thyroid tablets treat thyroid conditions; they are not a licensed route to weight loss.
-
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
-
In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours, but no increase has been shown in human trials.
-
Tell your prescriber about medullary thyroid cancer, MEN 2, gallbladder problems or pancreatitis before starting.
-
If you already take thyroid medicine, say so in your consultation so the prescriber can review your full medicine list.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Can thyroid tablets be used for weight loss?
No. Thyroid medicines exist to treat thyroid conditions, and using them to lose weight is not an approved use. Please do not self-treat with thyroid medicine for weight loss. If you think your thyroid is affecting your weight, ask your GP about a blood test and a proper review.
Weight gain has many causes, so a thyroid problem is only one possibility. A prescriber can look at your whole picture, including medicines you already take.
02 · What to do next
What licensed treatment does instead
Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults. 1 It activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. 1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.
If you are weighing up options, our weight loss drugs guide compares them, and you can start a free consultation through our weight loss clinic. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every order.
03 · Thyroid cancer safety
Weight loss drugs and thyroid cancer
In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours; it is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials. 1 As a precaution, tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2 — they will weigh this in your assessment. 1 Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.
Our Mounjaro thyroid cancer guide goes deeper on this question.
04 · Cancer and pancreas
Do weight loss drugs cause cancer?
Our page on whether weight loss injections can cause cancer explains the wider picture, and if you take a hormone-related cancer treatment, see tamoxifen and weight loss drugs.
Pancreatitis, which is inflammation rather than cancer, is a separate concern. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis). 13 Prescribers take extra care, or may advise against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis.
05 · Gallbladder risks
Weight loss drugs and the gallbladder
Gallstones (cholelithiasis) are a common side effect in the weight-management trials, affecting between 1 in 100 and 1 in 10 people. 1 Acute gallbladder problems were linked to the amount of weight lost.
Seek immediate medical help for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems), or for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. 13 Tell your prescriber about any past gallbladder problems before you start.
06 · Telling your prescriber
What to share before starting
Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation, including any thyroid medicine. 13 Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone, so the review matters.
To compare how treatments differ in practice, read about the effects of weight loss drugs and getting a Mounjaro prescription in the UK. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
