Supplements to Help GLP-1: What Actually Works (October 2026)

No supplement works like a GLP-1 medicine. The most useful support on treatment is food-first: protein at every meal, fibre, fluids and resistance exercise, with a supplement only where your pharmacist or prescriber agrees there is a gap. Products sold as "natural GLP-1" boosters are not licensed medicines.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No supplement is a licensed substitute for GLP-1 medicines such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide).
  • Protein, fibre, fluids and resistance exercise are the evidence-backed ways to support treatment.
  • Hair shedding, fatigue and constipation are usually managed with nutrition and hydration first.
  • Tell your prescriber or pharmacist about any supplement you take before you start or change one.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims on supplement labels deserve scepticism, and sellers offering prescription medicines without a consultation should be avoided.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Do GLP-1 supplements help with weight loss?

Supplements marketed as GLP-1 boosters, "nature's Ozempic" or the "poor man's Ozempic" are not the same as the medicines. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised.

The licensed medicines work through a defined mechanism. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 A capsule or powder labelled "GLP-1 support" is not that. Read our wider guide to GLP-1 weight loss supplements and the page on whether GLP-1 supplements are effective for more detail.

02 · If you are on treatment

What does support you while on a GLP-1 medicine?

The things with the clearest backing are practical habits, not pills. Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 That gives you a short, honest checklist:

  • Protein at every meal to protect lean tissue as appetite falls.
  • Resistance exercise on a regular weekly basis, plus brisk walking.
  • Fluids through the day, because you get less water from food when you eat less.
  • Vegetables and whole grains for fibre.

If you are thinking about starting treatment, our weight loss clinic explains how a prescriber review works.

03 · Protein and muscle

Protein, muscle and the case for food first

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein and resistance exercise on a regular weekly basis.1

This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls. Including a protein source at every meal is harder when you are barely hungry. A protein shake or powder can be a practical way to get there on low-appetite days, but it is a convenience, not a requirement. Choose what fits your diet and ask a pharmacist first.

The same principle explains "Ozempic face". It is not a drug effect. It is what losing a significant amount of weight quickly does to facial volume, on any method. The counter-measures are adequate protein, resistance exercise and a pace guided by your prescriber.1

04 · Side-effect support

Supplements and GLP-1 side effects

Most side effects are digestive, and the first line of help is not a supplement. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. They are most likely when starting or moving up a dose and usually ease within days to a few weeks.1

For nausea, practical steps are eating smaller meals slowly, stopping at the first feeling of fullness, favouring plain lower-fat foods, staying hydrated and not lying down straight after eating. For constipation, fluids come first, then fibre from vegetables and whole grains and daily movement. If it persists, a pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative.13

Fibre supplements and probiotics are often suggested online. Our page on probiotics and GLP-1 side effects goes through that question, and side effects of GLP-1 supplements covers the products themselves.

05 · Hair and fatigue

Hair shedding and tiredness

Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. For most people it settles as weight stabilises. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is why the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1

Fatigue is also a recognised common side effect, most noticeable in the first weeks and after dose increases. It usually reflects the body adjusting plus simply eating less. Keep meals balanced, stay hydrated and keep gentle activity going. Tell your clinical team if tiredness is severe or not settling.1

A multivitamin may be tempting here, but a supplement is not a substitute for eating enough. If you suspect a deficiency, ask your prescriber or pharmacist rather than guessing.

06 · Hydration and food

Hydration and foods that help

Drinking enough matters more on treatment than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly. Inability to keep fluids down is a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.1 Electrolyte drinks are sometimes marketed for this, but plain water within reach through the day is the baseline.

No food is banned on Mounjaro. Prioritise protein, vegetables and fibre, and expect very fatty, fried or sugary food to sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.1 Our guide to what foods help GLP-1 goes further. No food or drink acts like the medicine, so the "drink that works like Ozempic" does not exist.

07 · Safety and buying

Safety when buying supplements or medicines

Be wary of anyone offering GLP-1 "alternatives" with dramatic weight-loss claims, and of sellers offering to supply prescription medicines without a consultation or prescription. If you have a suspected side effect from a medicine or supplement, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Our page on where to buy GLP-1 supplements explains what to check. You can also check any pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878. Mounjaro is prescription-only, supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not medical advice.

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the best supplement for GLP-1?
There is no best supplement that replaces or boosts a GLP-1 medicine. If you are on treatment, the most useful support is protein at every meal, fibre, fluids and resistance exercise. Whether a supplement fills a gap is a question for your pharmacist or prescriber, who can consider your diet and health.
Is there a supplement that works like GLP-1?
No supplement is a licensed equivalent. Tirzepatide acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors to regulate appetite and slow stomach emptying.
What helps boost GLP-1 naturally?
Eating protein, vegetables and fibre, staying hydrated and being active all support healthy habits around weight management.
How to speed up weight loss on GLP-1?
Do not chase maximum speed. Mounjaro is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity, so protein, regular movement and resistance exercise are the sensible levers. Pace is best guided by your prescriber.
Why am I losing weight so fast on GLP-1?
Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. If you are eating very little, or the loss worries you, tell your clinical team.
How can I mimic Ozempic naturally?
You cannot reproduce a prescription GLP-1 medicine with food, drinks or supplements. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Balanced meals, protein, fibre, fluids and activity support weight management, but they are not a copy of the medicine. Beware products promising dramatic results; speak to a prescriber about licensed options.
What supplements help with GLP-1 side effects?
Start with the practical steps: smaller meals eaten slowly, plain lower-fat foods, plenty of water and fibre from food. A pharmacist can advise on laxatives for constipation. For anything else, ask a pharmacist or prescriber before buying, and report suspected side effects through Yellow Card.
Should I tell my prescriber about supplements?
Yes. Tell your prescriber or pharmacist about every supplement, vitamin or herbal product you take, before starting treatment and whenever you add one. They can check suitability alongside your medicines and spot anything that might add to digestive side effects.
