Which costs less: Ozempic or Mounjaro?

For weight loss, there is no Ozempic price to compare, because Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg), and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss.¹¹

So the useful question is Mounjaro against Wegovy. Both are licensed, effective treatments. Cost matters, but so do the dose you will end up on, how you tolerate it and what your prescriber advises.

The SURMOUNT-5 figures come from the first large head-to-head trial; individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.¹⁵ Both medicines are effective, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice rather than the headline number alone.¹⁵

03 · Planning your spend

What Mounjaro costs month by month and over a year

Each Mounjaro pen is one four-week supply, priced by dose. At standard prices that is £169.99 at 2.5mg, £189.99 at 5mg, £244.99 at 7.5mg, £274.99 at 10mg, £289.99 at 12.5mg and £299.99 at 15mg. A new customer saves £40 on their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices, before discounts. A first year (52 weeks, 13 pens) costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,279.88 at 15mg. These are standard-price totals: a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order is £25 less.

04 · Why Ozempic isn't compared

Why Ozempic has no weight-loss price here

Ozempic is semaglutide licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and using it privately for weight loss is off-label.¹¹ The semaglutide product licensed for weight management is Wegovy, which has its own dose ladder: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.¹⁸

That is why we do not publish an Ozempic price: a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss, and any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be treated as a warning sign. If you have type 2 diabetes and are prescribed Ozempic by your own clinician, cost and supply are a matter for that prescriber and the NHS, not for this comparison.

05 · Cost versus results

Cost versus results: what you get for the money

Price per pen tells only part of the story, because the two medicines have different trial results. In SURMOUNT-5, 751 adults took tirzepatide or semaglutide 2.4mg for 72 weeks; average loss was 22.8 kg on tirzepatide against 15.0 kg on semaglutide, and 20.2% of body weight against 13.7%.¹⁵ For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.2% is about 20 kg and 13.7% is about 14 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

In SURMOUNT-5, at least 15% of body weight was lost by 64.6% of people on tirzepatide against 40.1% on semaglutide.¹⁵ Wegovy's own trial, STEP 1, found adults on semaglutide 2.4mg lost on average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, against 2.4% on placebo.⁹ Those two trials are different studies, so only SURMOUNT-5 supports a direct comparison.

Tirzepatide's SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults reported average losses of 15% on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² A lower-priced pen is not better value if it is a poorer fit for you, so judge cost alongside tolerance and prescriber advice.

The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified; some fakes contained insulin rather than tirzepatide and have caused hospitalisations.⁷ Buy only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.¹² Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.

07 · NHS or private

NHS or private: the honest picture

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. If you are prescribed on the NHS, you pay only the standard prescription charge where it applies. Private treatment means you pay the pharmacy price, so a comparison of live prices is worth doing before you start.

08 · Who it suits

Who can use Mounjaro privately

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹ It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.

There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide. If you are moving from Wegovy or Ozempic, switching is done under prescriber supervision: typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval observed, and Mounjaro started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate, often the 2.5mg starting dose. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together.¹
