A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Wegovy is Novo Nordisk's once-weekly weight loss pen. Its ladder runs 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, then 2.4mg.
-
Mounjaro is made by Eli Lilly, not Novo Nordisk. It acts on two gut-hormone receptors rather than one.
-
Both pens are prescription-only and are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
-
Results are gradual and vary from person to person. Think in months, not days.
-
Beware sellers offering to supply any weight loss injection without a consultation or prescription.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Which Novo Nordisk pen is for weight loss?
The Novo Nordisk pen licensed for weight management is Wegovy, which contains semaglutide. It is injected under the skin once a week, and the 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose.18 Treatment starts low and climbs: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and then 2.4mg, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the maintenance dose from week 17.
Novo Nordisk's name is also attached to Ozempic, which is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only. Prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Our guide to Novo Nordisk's weight loss drugs covers the brands side by side.
Novo Nordisk also makes a daily liraglutide injection (Saxenda). Liraglutide is supplied at 6mg per millilitre and is injected daily, unlike the weekly pens.
02 · Comparison
Novo Nordisk pens compared with Mounjaro
The main difference is who makes the pen and how it works. Wegovy is a single-action medicine from Novo Nordisk. Mounjaro comes from Eli Lilly and is described as the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1.1
| Feature | Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) | Mounjaro (Eli Lilly) |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Tirzepatide |
| How often | Once weekly | Once weekly |
| Dose ladder | 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg | 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, 15mg |
| Mechanism | Single-action, mimics the gut hormone GLP-1 | Dual action on GIP and GLP-1 receptors |
| Pen design | Pre-filled pen | Multi-dose KwikPen with four weekly doses |
| Prescription needed | Yes | Yes |
Neither pen is a shortcut. Each sits alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity. Our page on Novo Nordisk and Mounjaro explains why the two companies are so often confused.
03 · What to do next
What should you do next?
Decide whether you want to talk to a prescriber about a licensed weight management injection at all. If so, a free online consultation is the starting point. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
If you want to see what Mounjaro costs, the Mounjaro pen page shows live prices for all six doses. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). For Novo Nordisk's pen, see current Wegovy prices and availability; the first pen starts at £99.99 as a first-order price. For wider support, visit our weight loss clinic.
04 · How semaglutide pens work
How Novo Nordisk's pen works
Wegovy contains semaglutide, which mimics a natural gut hormone called GLP-1.
Mounjaro's own approach is dual. Together, the two receptors it activates help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 That dual action is what distinguishes it from single-action medicines such as semaglutide.
Neither mechanism does the work alone. These are tools that make a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow. Our guide to how Novo Nordisk's gut-hormone agonists work goes deeper on the receptor biology for readers who want it.
Eligibility rules depend on the individual medicine's licence and on your health history. Your prescriber will check them against your health history.
05 · The Wegovy dose ladder
The Wegovy dose ladder
Wegovy is built around a slow climb. The pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, and each step lasts four weeks.18 You reach the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.
The starting dose is there so your body can adjust to the medicine. Do not judge the treatment by the lowest steps.
Mounjaro uses a similar idea with different numbers. Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the pace.
If you are curious about how the weekly pens are stored once you have them, our page on how long Wegovy lasts in the fridge covers the practical side.
06 · How a prescriber evaluates you
What a Novo Nordisk weight loss injection evaluation involves
An evaluation is a clinical review of whether an injection is safe and sensible for you. It is not a quiz that scores you. At EverydayMeds it starts with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. A GPhC-registered prescriber then reviews it.
The prescriber is looking at your medical history, current medicines, any conditions that make a particular pen unsuitable and whether the licence fits your situation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
Be ready to tell the prescriber about every medicine you take, including those bought over the counter. Interactions are covered in the patient information leaflet.13
Evaluation does not stop at the first prescription. Treatment response is reviewed over time. For Mounjaro, if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1 We provide ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, plus side-effect support.
Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically. That matters because the right dose can change as you progress. It also keeps you in control of the pace.
07 · What results look like
What results look like
Weight loss on these injections is gradual by design. For Mounjaro, the first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1 Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
Separate trials are not a head-to-head comparison, so trial numbers from different medicines should not be set side by side. If you want a direct comparison of the two medicines, ask your prescriber which evidence applies to you.
Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Some people notice appetite change in week one; others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal.1
08 · Side effects and safety
Side effects and safety
The commonest early effects are digestive and tiredness-related. For Mounjaro, mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1 Semaglutide pens have their own leaflet, and you should read it before your first dose.
The patient information leaflist lists every known effect and how often it occurs. If something new or worrying appears, speak to your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Contraception needs care. Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows.7 Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only. If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. This is not a reason to avoid treatment, but your prescriber must know.
As for what not to mix: do not use leftover or borrowed pens, and do not buy an injection from someone who offers to supply without a consultation or prescription.
09 · Ozempic and 'poor man's Ozempic'
Ozempic, Wegovy and "poor man's Ozempic"
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only, while Wegovy is the Novo Nordisk pen licensed for weight management. When you ask about weight loss, Wegovy is the one built for weight management. Do not assume the two are interchangeable, and never swap them yourself.
"Poor man's Ozempic" and "nature's Ozempic" are marketing phrases, usually applied to supplements such as berberine. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. Dosing is not standardised, and they do not act like a prescription medicine. Sellers may make dramatic weight-loss claims. Treat those with suspicion.
A supplement is not a licensed alternative to a prescribed pen. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for suspected problems.7
10 · Using a weekly pen day to day
Using a weekly pen day to day
The routine is simple, and the habits are the same across weekly pens. For Mounjaro, the injection goes under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.1 Rotate the site with each dose. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection.
There is no "best" time of day. What matters is the same day each week. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off.
If you miss a Mounjaro dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. You can also change your injection day, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.
Follow your own pen's leaflet. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order from us.
11 · Storing and travelling
Storing and travelling with your pen
Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, useful for short trips, after which it should be discarded.1 Keep the cap on to protect the pen from light, and never use one that has been frozen.
You can fly with it. Carry pens in hand luggage, because hold luggage can fall below freezing, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. Check destination rules before you fly. For hot climates, use an insulated pouch.
Unopened pens keep in the fridge until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it, rather than relying on a remembered day limit. Figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.
Novo Nordisk pens have their own storage instructions. Always follow the leaflet in your box.18
12 · NHS access and genuine supply
NHS access and spotting genuine supply
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
If you go private, check the pharmacy. Ours is GPhC-registered (9012878), and you can confirm that on the public register.12 We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. For Novo Nordisk's pen, see our page on genuine Wegovy from Novo Nordisk, and for the lowest Wegovy dose, the Wegovy 0.25mg page.
Delivery is free, next-day and tracked, in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. We dispatch the same day when you order by 3pm. All six Mounjaro doses are in stock.
13 · Other Novo Nordisk products
Other Novo Nordisk products to know about
Novo Nordisk's range goes beyond weekly pens. There are oral options, including a Wegovy tablet. For current Wegovy tablet prices, visit the product page.20 Our guides to Novo Nordisk's oral options and the wider Novo Nordisk product range explain what each is for.
Treating them as a family helps. Each is a prescription medicine, each needs a prescriber, and each works alongside diet and activity. For a view of the companies side by side, see our overview of Novo Nordisk's gut-hormone drugs and our page on how Mounjaro relates to Novo.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
14 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
